Never truly threatened by Sandy. Wet conditions probably reduced the likely margin (should have been 80+). Dominated them at the clearances and on transition in a fairly open game.

Player write ups:
  • Watkins was very good again. Rarely wasted it and was used as an offensive weapon at centre clearances. 31 disposals and a goal.
  • Hall got plenty of it, used it real well at times and poorly at others. Was better with the contested and defensive stuff today.
  • Downie was excellent. Has smarts, a big body and uses it really well. 24 disposals and a goal.
  • Phillips rarely wasted the footy and is a very smart player. Still think he needs a few weeks to improve his fitness and spread. 23 disposals and a goal assit or two.
  • Best game I have ever seen from Fordy (has kicked more goals before, but this was a more complete game). Astonishing first quarter with 13 disposals and 2 goals. Wet weather affected him, but it was more the poor delivery that reduced his final numbers. Came back into in the fourth when things dried up. Working up the ground and doubling back really suited him. Finishing with 3 goals, 3 marks and 23 disposals.
  • Howe was good finishing with 22 disposals playing as an inside mid.
  • Lienert was good defensively, though some of his disposal decision making makes me nervous.
  • TT was played off HB in the first half and looked very rusty/slow/fumbly. Shifted into the middle in the third and still struggled. His fourth quarter was something else though. Clean, composed, used the ball with utter class and won 11 (maybe 12) disposals for the last quarter to finish with 18 disposals.
  • Hodgson (17), Greenwood (17) and Young (17) all did their jobs. Don't think Greenwood is 100% fit.
  • Lowson kicked 3.4 and had 15 disposals playing as a hit up medium forward. Played very well.
  • Butler generally used his 15 disposals well.
  • Dawson was mostly good. A few issues with disposal decision making, but was defensively sound.
  • Nick Stevens: Same as Dawson. Kicked a nice goal.
  • Spicer finished with 13 disposals, 3 tackles, 1 GA and a goal. Used it well and was better defensively today.
  • Harvey was everywhere in the forward line. Finished with 13 disposals, a goal assist, 3 marks and kicked 4.1.
  • Free competed hard against 2 very good rucks. Won 18 hitouts and 11 disposals.
  • Bonar was very good. Not sure if he's injured or not.
  • Ellwood, Bode Stevens and Bath were all servicable.
  • Edwards did some ok things, but isn't fit or big enough.

Reminds me of those really tall, skinny basketball guys who are only playing because they are tall.

Phillips good especially in the last quarter at the bounce in the middle. Combined well with Thomas.

Thomas better value as a mid than a hb.

Cooper 'Champagne' Harvey had a day. Thought he was fading in the beginning of the last but finished strong.
Has to learn not to kick it to Howe.
That's the last I want to see of Thomas at HB. Such a natural in and out mid.

That’s the first good game Cooper had played, hopefully he can string a few together now.

Ford & Phillips probably next cabs off the rank.

Thought Thomas was poor in the first half but looked better when moved into the midfield.

Lowson kicked 3.4 and another that fell short with his 15 disposals. Would love to see him get a shot in the msd

Glad we smacked a vfl team for once

Wilphil in next week pls

Cooper should debut this year
Lowson msd
Unless the set plan is to have WilPhil play a certain number of games at this level to really boost his confidence and set a new benchmark before returning, then yes I agree he is the one to warrant a return. If Cooper can back that up, he deserves a debut for sure. And Eddie Ford is putting pressure on the mid sized forwards to perform.

How’s Tazza going?
An addendum to my comment which was very early in the game, he certainly improved in the second half which is understandable given his time away from the game. Showed much better signs in the last qtr.

Sam Lowson is VFL’s ‘most dynamic player’, says coach Tom Lynch as AFL mid-season draft looms

Sam Lowson is rated by his coach as the “most dynamic player in the VFL by a long, long way’’. He has the chance to finally earn an AFL spot after rotten luck four years ago, writes PAUL AMY.

The message from Tom Lynch comes through as loud and clear as a final siren: don’t forget Sam Lowson.

Lynch, the North Melbourne VFL coach and former AFL Crow and Saint, says Lowson is the “most dynamic player in the VFL by a long, long way’’ and that AFL clubs should be considering him ahead of the mid-season draft.

The 27-year-old has kicked 16.10 and averaged 15.8 possessions from six matches this season, setting out with a bag of five against Port Melbourne in round one.

In his only game at local level, he booted seven goals for East Ringwood against Eastern league power Vermont.

Lowson was touted as the first selection for the mid-season draft four years ago.
Two days before it, he suffered injuries to a knee and ankle.

He was overlooked when it became clear he faced a long stretch on the sidelines.
“Sam’s been awesome for us,’’ Lynch says of the right-footer.

“He’s been playing a mix of forward and mid, and he’s just been so impressive.
“It would be very enticing for a club to take him because he’s never been fitter, he’s adding things to his game, he’s enjoying football and he’s a resilient kid.

“In my mind, he’s the most dynamic player in the VFL by a long, long way and I hope people haven’t forgotten what he can do.’’

Lowson joined the Kangaroos this year from Coburg, encouraged to make the move by North assistant Leigh Adams, who coached him at the Bergers.

He says the transfer has revitalised his football.

“It’s just good to be back feeling fully healthy and being able to play some good footy.
“I’m loving it at North. ‘Patch’ (Adams) rang me and we had a conversation about me wanting to give it one more crack at getting picked up, and he said there would be a good opportunity to do it under ‘Lynchy’ (Lynch) and the program they’ve set up and the facilities they’ve got.

“I trained with the AFL boys over the pre-season and that was good to do. I’m still pushing towards getting to the top level, working my arse off, really. I think I’ve got five or six years of good footy in me at least. My body’s feeling great and I’m moving well.’’

Lowson is working as a carpenter.

The week before the 2019 mid-season draft, he hoped he would be giving up the tools and making the transition to full-time footballer.

The words “potential No.1 pick” often accompanied mentions of his name.

But a couple of days out from the draft, his leg was caught in a tackle against Geelong in a Saturday night game.

He went in for surgery on the Tuesday, his name having gone uncalled.
Lowson missed nine weeks of football.

As he came back late in the season, he realised how far back in the order he had slipped.

“I was very underdone. I’d lost my fitness, my strength,’’ he says.

“Those couple of months were pretty flattening, especially after speaking to a lot of clubs. I was hoping it was my time to get a shot.’’

In 2020, he never got the chance to again advertise his ability as an elusive small forward; Covid killed off the season.

Later, a knee injury was another setback.

“There’s been a few hiccups along the way,’’ Lowson says.

“But you’ve just got to move on. I’m at a point now where I’m really fit and playing some good footy. Hopefully people think I’ve still got a lot to give.’’

Meanwhile, Lynch says the Kangaroos have two other “genuine’’ draft hopes in former Hawk Connor Downie and their VFL captain Jack Watkins.

Downie had 28 possessions and kicked a goal against Sandringham last weekend
“He’s running 15km a game,’’ Lynch says of Downie, who dropped off Hawthorn’s list at the end of 2022 after two games. “He’ll get an AFL look, whether it’s this year or next year.’’

He says Watkins is a “two-way runner, he tackles, he chases, he’s a great ball-user, he’s got a huge tank … he just runs from contest to contest to contest’’.

Lynch also says the Roos have two likely young key forwards in Ben Bath from Euroa and Tyler Sellers from Old Scotch.

He likens Sellers to pack-hitting Magpie Brody Mihocek and says Bath “has some real tricks’’.

vfl overlaps with the seniors again this weekend

So the game day emergency can’t play vfl and even the sub if they want more mins in them
Mate
This has been happening for years and nothing will change until this club stands up and try and get a better deal for the VFL side.
Be lucky to 30 people there as everyone else will be at home or at a pub ready to watch the AFL at 2pm

I’m playing this week vs Geelong

Coach told me that my kicking to advantage was the biggest reason I got picked this week

The VFLW scheduling is so weird like we’ve already played geelong but we also haven’t played a few other teams
