I really rate Xerri. Naturally he has some things to work on but you can’t teach /develop the hardness he brings. He does/will make others stand taller as well having the opposition looking over their shoulder! Can’t wait until if and when he manages to cement himself in the seniors.

This is spot on - I’ve watched him a bit in the VFL - he be if the few on our list And only big man that loves to rag doll the opposition in a tackle, he’s tough but also agile for his size

Can ruck and can kick goals when fit.

Id probably give him another week in the twos unless they think he’s tip top fitness wise.

How’s Pat Walker’s physicality and defending? I’ve been told it’s why he I ended up in the rookie list and not the
Main draft. No questions on his ability to find and kick the footy, but not the most natural defender
I’d have to say I didn’t really notice; I’ll keep an eye on that next time

Are you kidding?

UNLEASH HIM ON THE SOFT BULLDOGS DEFENCE!

TELL HIM TO PAINT A VISUAL TARGET ON ENGLISH!

So melbourne by 8 at the finish. Probably won't say much here that I haven't already posted, but in summary; Campbell, what an asset to the club at this level; Xerri in the goals, rucking well and got around the ground; Atu quieter in the last qtr but clean (bar one) and runs to create; Phillips ran out the whole game, and racked it up; Garner played three quarters and was excellent, leading up and distributing. Will Walker went into the centre in the second half and got more involved, with some clearances and I50s.

Spicer has a lot of work to do - a few flashes last week and nothing this week; Ford quiet bar an excellent set shot. Pat Walker solid but unspectacular

overall, the club will benefit from the consistency in game plan - possess it out of D50 wherever possible and take the risk on turnover; as this develops, players will know their roles whether it's in the ones or two, and we'll be better for it.

Of the VFL players, 57 Harry Jones plays in the centre, gets his share, kicked a couple. Appleby at HFB was ok

Atu was terrific. Really good in the air for a little bloke. Quick. Shanked a couple, but it was slippery. He’s improving at a rate of knots.

Agree on Spicer. He’s not using his speed. Barely touched it. Maybe time to get him up the ground so he can get into it.

Ford looks like he mentally drifts out of games. Since I saw him in preseason. Capable of the brilliant, but just as likely to do something ludicrously bad.

”Jonesy” is the pick of the VFL boys I’ve seen so far.

Ford’s greatest assets are his lightning-hands, tackling and inside-bull work, so why he’s parked forward without even a run on the ball at VFL level is beyond me. He also looks to be under clear instruction to clear out at forward 50 stoppages also. Notwithstanding all that he picked up 12-15 possessions while also charging back to the goal square or 50 arc constantly because of the insane anti-density rules in the VFL.

Certainly looking forward to watching him develop over the year.

How is it ok to have different rules in the VFL to the AFL? Who’s idea was this madness?

Must make things incredibly difficult for young blokes like Ford and Spicer who have been training all preseason with the AFL side and now have to adapt to ridiculous zoning only to forget it when they get called up. Beyond stupid.

Yes it is let’s all hope next year the VFL will either fall in line and conform with the AFL rules or they will be an AFL Reserves competition next year for 18 teams

He did have his nose spread over his face last week, so lacing up in the forward line today's not a bad effort; there's others getting rotated through the centre square who aren't natural centre men - like Will Walker - so you'd think eddie will get a chance in due course

North Melbourne has put in its best performance so far in this VFL pre-season, narrowly going down to the Casey Demons 81-73 on Saturday.

Casey took the lead early and North never managed to reign them in, as the Demons led at every major break.

However, the Demons were forced to work for the win, with North VFL coach Leigh Adams saying that everything is starting to come together for his side.
“We feel like our VFL boys are really starting to understand the concepts we’re trying to play at AFL level,” Adams told North Media.

“We feel like we’re understanding and executing about 90 per cent of our game style, the next step is just a few situational things … I’m really happy with the direction we’re tracking.

“There’s still two practice games before round one, so hopefully we get a win the boost the confidence of the boys, but they understand we’re going in the right direction.”

Despite the hotly contested nature of the clash, there were no injuries to report, with AFL-listed player Taylor Garner amongst those playing on minute restrictions.

Adams said players returning to full fitness can only strengthen the VFL and AFL sides.

Taylor Garner got through the allotted time he needed to get through today, and we had Louis Cunningham coming back from injury who got through well,” he said.

“We had the most AFL-listed boys we’ve had so far with ten … a fair few AFL boys are coming back from injury which is clearly going to strengthen our program.
“We were happy to get through with no new injuries, and hopefully we’ll get a few more boys back soon.”

Will Phillips played his first full game of football in over a year against Casey and was a constant presence in the midfield.

The number three draft pick was playing on restricted minutes in North’s first practice games, but was finally unleashed for a full four quarters against the Demons.

Adams said he’d been impressed with the development of Phillips over the course of the pre-season.

“Will was really good in tough conditions again, it was a greasy footy and he looked really good in the contest,” he added.

“He was clean, he used the ball well and he ran the game out really well.

“We forget it’s been a while since he played a full game of football … to run out a full game of footy against men will do him the world of good.”
Stay tuned for chats with Will Phillips and Eddie Ford in the coming days.

Thanks for all this. Best 007 since Sean Connery.

People lose their minds when the AFL introduces rules without trying them in a lower league first, and then when they try something in a lower league....

It’s more that it’s a ridiculous rule.
It wastes more time than waiting for ruckman to show up at a bounce to nominate. And it turns three unfortunate forwards into seat-fillers.

I don't like the idea but then everyone was hating on the new man on the mark rule three weeks ago and now people love it. Point is you don't really know until you see it in practice.

Larkey will appreciate his return & Josh Walker can play the swingman role in Tazzas absence.
I'd like to see Walker still stay forward, genuinely competing and clunking the odd contested grab. Is Young big enough to play on a OPPO 3rd tall? Don't want to rob Peter to pay Paul throwing Walker back given how he straightens us up. Xerri could slot into the square and chop Goldy out, we know Goldy can compete up forward too
