AFLW 2024 - Round 10 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
Imagine drawing list depth conclusions from a VFL practice game…Port 4-7-31
Pies 1-5-11
Half time
Port poor kicking at goal kept us in it.
Midfield smashed
Bytel and Carmy on wings - if they make it next level it won’t be on wing
Big fears for the list post Pendles Sidey Titch Checkers Billy etc - just nothing in VFL.
Allan definitely has some class. To make it to afl level he needs to improve his physicality and production
Cripps had the same problem in the early stages of his second year. He'll be fineHas a touch of AJ traits at the minute in terms of second efforts

Still looks Skinny.Allan definitely has some class. To make it to afl level he needs to improve his physicality and production
Allan is anything but skinny. He’s at his playing weight.Still looks Skinny.
Especially in his Legs
How did Reef go? I don't see any goals or a mention. That's disappointing if he's next in line to come into the seniors.Allan impresses through the middle
Second-year midfielder Ed Allan was fantastic through the centre of the ground on Friday, finding plenty of the ball in space and in the contest. The 19-year-old’s increased endurance was a feature as he bobbed up in many of the side’s damaging plays all across the ground. Often using his height to his advantage, Allan dished quick hands to his teammates, while also weaving his way out of traffic on multiple occasions.
Sofronidis stands tall in defence
Playing in his first official game since joining the Club’s VFL side, Sam Sofronidis was impressive in the defensive fifty against Port Melbourne. Often the last man in defence, the 194cm tall was tasked with matching up the opposition’s key forwards all day and repelled many forward entries. Having spent the summer trialling with the AFL squad, Sofronidis is well equipped with his teammates already.
Third quarter fightback
After trailing by 21 points at the main break, the Pies came out with vengeance in the third quarter to turn the game around. A brilliant team play saw Jack Hutchinson kick the first goal of the term, while the pressure displayed in the front half caused multiple turnovers that resulted in goals. Often looking for a better option in front of the big sticks, four different goal-kickers hit the scoreboard.
Noble and Jiath show poise off half back
AFL-listed players John Noble and Tew Jiath showed multiples examples of their run and dare off half back on Friday, setting up many of the Pies’ attacking plays. Still in his first pre-season at the Pies, Jiath’s ability to evade and side-step his opponents has been a feature throughout the young defender’s practice matches. Noble, having played as the sub in the Club’s Opening Round AFL clash with GWS last week, showed his typical speed and dash through the back half on Friday in a solid outing.
Looking to Round One
After a win in their first practice match against Richmond two weeks ago and then today’s loss, the Pies’ VFL pre-season has come to an end. Attention turns to next Friday when the Magpies take on Sandringham at RSEA Park to open the VFL season.
Goal-kickers:
Josh Carmchaell 2, Lachie Sullivan, Jack Hutchinson, Billy Frampton, Jedd Longmire, Campbell Lane

Hard to tell who he’d replace but the numbers aren’t good for Collingwood.Might Debut vs Saints on Thursday Night?
There is Sullivan available for more midfield time. He at has the VFL resume that others do not. Jack Bytel exists, although it now looks dumb we did not invite some tall timbre to play.Allan impresses through the middle

Cripps supposedly had no endurance, whereas our boy supposedly has a tank. So not sure if it's the same issue. Not that I've seen enough of Allan to know if it is an issue at all.Cripps had the same problem in the early stages of his second year. He'll be fine
No, by his second year Cripps was seen as a player who’d make it. We’d assessed his endurance wasn’t good enough. However, we soon learnt that you can train endurance whereas you can’t train talent and skill as easily. That’s why we took Maynard. Should always have been Cripps over Freeman but to be fair, Freeman had many issues outside of football, still not entirely sure what. Scharenberg was the right call - injuries unlucky.Cripps had the same problem in the early stages of his second year. He'll be fine

Oscar Steene is not ready. Would be cleaned up from the MCG.
I was hoping we'd select Teakle too. Surprised when we didn't. Particularly when I heard Leppa say we'd been looking at him the year before. That's why for me with the SSP selections, l would’ve taken Eyre, one of Bytel or Sullivan. For me Bytel, because he's already had that AFL senior experience and is a bigger mid and l also would have taken Teakle.
Teakle is only 24, he could play in the ruck and drift forward. Considering Coxy is 33, is the game going past him a bit?
Teakle we could have put forward, just to be that big target, particularly with McStay out, and give relief to a Mihocek or Johnson ......
Hope we get sof in MSD
Think we should of drafted I'm tbh
Agree teakle would be handy also
Well if you look at the practice games, I’d have taken Sullivan. I don’t see it with Bytel. That's why for me with the SSP selections, l would’ve taken Eyre, one of Bytel or Sullivan. If Teakle had have showed enough maybe we would have. Not sure why were lamenting the non-signing of a potential SSP player who wasn’t able to stake a claim after trialing over summer.
Treacle was too slow.If Teakle had have showed enough maybe we would have. Not sure why were lamenting the non-signing of a potential SSP player who wasn’t able to stake a claim after trialing over summer.
