They would have to increase list size up to 60 players to get a reserves comp going, they would all have to be fully paid professionals. Just cannot see that happening when you consider that every AFL list now have a minimum of 10 players on it that are either colts or barely good enough to play league at State league level.

Well it is working now in the VFL with 14 AFL reserves teams competing in it.
So would have to delve in how the other teams are currently managing that.

Why would you have to increase list sizes to 60 and be fully paid professionals?

It currently works in the VFL with a mix of semi-pro's and AFL players.

Depending on injuries, you should only really have 5-10 VFL listed players each week. Obviously there's exceptions where it can be much greater, but you have a supplementary VFL list for that.

When you have minimum injuries, those players play local football with their nominated clubs when they don't get VFL games.

In your scenario, their home WAFL clubs could be their nominated backup clubs if they aren't in the reserves comp.

You can't start flying around the country to play football and hold a full time job. The Eagles and Dockers joining in would change the entire scope of the comp and force them all to be fully paid pros. An Hour flight some where is no big deal, change that to 2-3 and 4-5 hour flights and that changes things.

Just can't see it happening otherwise.

Yes you can.

Literally is happening right now and working fine flying Melbourne to Sydney/Brisbane/Gold Coast.

No different to Melbourne based suburban footballers driving 5-6 hours (and back) to a paying weekend country football club gig.

They have no major flight times, expand it to SA and WA and that changes the entire thing. You would have to ask the VFL teams now you have to fly to Perth and Adelaide during the year will your employees give you days off to play footy especially seconds footy?

Might be different in melbourne? Go ask any 25 year old WAFL player who never got drafted if they want to play for the Eagles or Dockers in a seconds comp and they will tell you to go shove it. They are not going to play ina comp no club is interested in winning, it's a training and development centre. They will just stay with their WAFL or SANFL clubs. In Victoria they clearly have little choice.

Melbourne to Adelaide is a much shorter flight than Melbourne to Brisbane (which they currently do FIFO the same day)

Why do you keep saying they are going to have to take days off?

If the Melbourne/Perth legs are played on Saturday's with Friday night flights and the Saturday red-eye, I see no reason why they can't front up to work on Monday morning.

Don't play in the comp and get your $1000-$1500 per game then.

I think most blokes would be fine with the free travel for $1500 per game during footy season.

HAHA, what?!

Do you have any idea what you are talking about outside of your WAFL bubble? clearly not....

Putting aside clubs like Werribee, Williamstown, Port Melbourne, Coburg, Frankston for a minute...

The Melbourne Metro suburban and country comps are massive leagues, with huge budgets that dwarf almost all of the VFL, SANFL, WAFL club budgets.

The VFL salary cap is $200k this year for unaligned clubs.

A local club like Deer Park was rumoured to be spending close to $500-$700k per season on their senior side.

You know all those kids in the NAB League, Vic Metro, Vic Country squads that are churned out year on year? They actually go somewhere, they don't disappear..

The VFL is living proof there are players prepared to put training, development and the chance to get drafted above money....Most of the best VFL players would get offered small fortunes year on year to play local football.

Young players yes, seasoned players NO. How many 24 year olds plus got drafted in the last 12 months?

By the way i think it is awesome you have far stronger footy leagues than the VFL under it.

Not many, but that's a reflection of ageism of AFL recruiters. Doesn't prevent some of the best sticking around.

Shaun Mannagh is probably the best state league player in Australia and at 26 is still gutting it out doing the same travel you say others wont.

He had 25 touches and kicked 7 goals against St Kilda's reserves (Sandringham) for Werribee on the weekend.

He had 28 and kicked 3.3 the week before against a Carlton midfield of George Hewett, Paddy Dow, Zac Fisher and Jack Carroll.

The week prior he had 29 and kicked 2.1 against Richmonds reserves.

Good player, heaps of them in the WAFL and SANFL also, for some reason AFL clubs just overlook them sadly.

Yeah all of the above really. Would be interesting to see the costs for the Gold Coast/Brisbane/Sydney/GWS games in the VFL currently.

Posted it a few times, but Tredrea reckons he heard from within the industry that an AFL reserves comp is 2 years away. Take that with a grain of salt.

It feels like it’s been “2 years away” for a while. I know there was Covid in there, but still.

You will have to take time from work.If you play in sydney, brisbane or melbourne on a saturday you will need to flyout friday early.
You would need to fly out at 1pm on friday to make sense with a a four hour flight and gain two hours arrive 7pm and in a hotel maybe by 8pm.
You also need time to get to the airport so there goes your workday.
A sunday game will mean leaving saturday and arriving late in perth on sunday night.Basically means you have no weekend or rest time.
A Afl reserves for the vic clubs, sydney and brisbane and if adelaide join works as they can fly in on the day with short flights and no time zones except the half hour for adelaide.
Afl players don't work so don't have to worry about when they leave or arrive.
Also don't think the Afl would do any favours in fixturing a Eagles reserves game to help part timers.

That's the same situation for the Umpires, they have full time jobs. Depends on the individual's circumstances, but as long as the employer isn't completely unreasonable then they should be able to make it work.

Well, I would imagine that almost all WA->Eastern Seaboard games would almost always be early Sunday games (11am-1pm)

Meaning players leave Saturday lunchtime and can catch the red-eye back and be back in bed in Perth on Sunday by around 8-9pm.

VIC/QLD/NSW games in WA could be Saturday twilight fixtures (Fly in Saturday morning with the positive time difference), fly home Sunday morning.

So only 3 this week? Only Baker named and assume Dewar and Edwards come into the team.

Edwards is in Brisbane

Once again it’ll be Dewar and Baker as the only listed players rolling out for the Beagles

it doesn't work that way in the Vfl.When stand alone teams play each other at the moment on a thursday or friday the vfl teams usually play at a suburban oval either in the afternoon.Sydney have had to play multiple vfl games on either a thursday or friday a couple of times. There are exceptions as there are still some of the traditional clubs still left in the Vfl and the draw doesn't allow for all stand alone teams to play each other in the same round.

what i think will happen is if the Eagles have a friday away or saturday away game they will all travel together which means players with jobs will have to take time off from their employers.

Interesting intenraction on a potential AFL reserves comp. The travel issues evidentlyt work for umpites and some clubs manage it, from what others have contributed. The missing ingredient appears to be money. This is were we lack real transparency with AFL spending. As an example I am not aware of the AFL doing much for junior development/growth in Perth but I know they invest a lot in Sydney. This investment is actually tied to the broadcasting rights. There is a solution if people wish to seek it out.

Or, it becomes an AFL only comp and isnt part of the VFL- feathers may fly.

the biggest issue still for the eagles is the time in the air and 2 hour time difference which makes scheduling games harder.Adelaide ,sydney and brisbane can fly the same day if they want but eagles & dockers will always be a different problem.
