Is it really up to a group of 17 year-olds to torpedo another kid's chance at making it? He clearly had the talent as Sydney took a punt on him despite the negativity.

Plenty of players have managed to mature and go on with it in a professional environment, away from undesirable influences. Elijah didn't and in fact blew it all up in horrible style but closing the door on his best chance to have success and improve his prospects is a pretty massive call.

On the flip side of that you have a whole group of 17 year olds, many hoping to go onto AFL footy. Learning to get on with your job and work out how to perform when you don't particularly care for a team mate is going to be a pretty useful skill in that environment.

I really doubt Sumich was thinking about "looking good" by keeping Taylor on. The easy thing to do would have been to cut him loose.

Do have to LOL about the team unity thing when our actual head coach backed in Willie Rioli who torched our 2019 finals campaign and has been basically pissing on the club ever since.
I wasn't comparing sumich to anyone.
There was reasons taylor was kicked off the team by the leadership group.there was probably also reasons those players were voted to the leadership group.
Someone close to that particular team held those views, has been around football for a long time and doesnt have much time for sumich since.
Turns out Taylor wasnt cut out for a professional environment so said 17yos made a call that seems correct

The Eagles are still going to run into the same problem that face them now in that who wants to play for a team that does not have winning the competition as a priority and is really there to simply just develop their kids.
At least the Dockers have Peel who are genuinely trying to win the WAFL.

30+ players including a few with AFL experience and a large number with WAFL experience signed up as top up squad members this year.

So no need to recruit then, things are doing great with these strong ex AFL and senior WAFL players. Not hard to recruit amatuer and country league players if you give them a couple hundred per game.

I’ve said a few times I don’t think there was any issue with the squad we put together for this year.

The issue was that we were having to play 17-19 of them every week rather than 10-12. And a lot of the better top up players were injured as well which just exacerbated the situation. Waterman only played a couple of games, for example.

I agree with that but the Eagles reserves team need some serious senior WAFL players playing for them to help the development of the AFL listed kids. And my point is it's very hard to get those types of players off other WAFL clubs who have a totally different goal to the Eagles.
Injuries kill any WAFL side and especially a side set up like the Eagles are.

I am still a believer that an alignment can work as long as the Eagles don't expect to be calling all the shots. Freo and Peel work well because they respect each others program where as when the Eagles have been aligned they want to run everything and of course this stuffs up the WAFL club and hence it falls over.

An alignment would probably be the best setup, but with who? Perth is the obvious one but are dead against it. Unless they somehow change their minds, we’re basically left without a dance partner.

Yes Perth is the obvious but I think they are scared because of how the Eagles operate is these circumstances and the history. East Perth said it was a nightmare for them and they lost control of their own club. Perth would have to run it and they just do their best to appease the Eagles with player positions and requests.
Like I said the Eagles need to work with instead of trying to dictate.

They’ve taken the position that it’s flat out not allowed under their constitution. I don’t see how tinkering with the terms is going to help that.

If Freo were aligned with any club other than Peel they’d have the same issues we did with East Perth

The alignment at Peel works because they had no history as a WAFL club and no rusted on support base. They’d also had no success and limited scope for any in the future

Fremantle were essentially a saviour that brought them the additional players and financial support they needed and weren’t going to get from anywhere else

I doubt WCE were always the easiest bedside partner but East Perth aren’t blameless either

A smart operator at Perth would recognise the opportunity an alignment could bring which would include some parameters around how it would work. But they have Adrian Barich

And a support base that still pines for the glory days that were half a century ago

Perth's quote was they would rather win multiple wooden spoons rather than merge with the Beagles and have any success.

When the inevitable AFL reserves comp happens they will get their wish when they are battling it out with Peel every year for the woodwork.

Perth need to realise that at the moment they hold all the cards as far as a alignment goes. The longer they refuse to see it as a great opportunity to build the Mighty Demons back into being competitive, it will be to late and eventually they will have no choice but to accept a takeover.

Maybe that had a fair bit to do with Nizzy trying to run the show - perhaps when we get our new CEO things may change for the better. One can only hope for all concerned although to give Nizzy his due he was a good operator in his prime - it’s just that he’s stayed around too long imo.

Congrats Hammer

Pity the indecision around the future of our standalone side at the end of 2021 meant we lost him to East Perth

Would’ve been perfect at the Beagles

Hamish Brayshaw has won the Sandover Medal, finishing on 26 votes. Luke Meadows from West Perth was second on 19 votes while Swan Districts' Jesse Turner and East Perth's Angus Schmacher were tied for third with 18 votes. Rounding out the top five were Mitch Crowden from East Perth and East Fremantle's Milan Murdock who were tied for fifth on 17 votes.

West Coast's leading players were Josh Browne and Greg Clark (ineligible) with two votes. Jed Kemp, Shannon Lucassen and Xavier O'Neill were the Eagles' other vote winners with one apiece.

Well done to Hamish.
Always knew he was good enough to win it.
No chance we could have kept him unless we offered him a job at the club.
Seems like he has really found a home at EP. Looks really settled there.
