MELBOURNE is hopeful Jack Watts will play in round one but says the emerging key forward will determine his own availability.
Watts, the No.1 pick in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft, had a delayed start to pre-season training because of illness and is now entering a full program after making considerable ground over the Christmas and New Year break.
Assistant coach Mark Williams said it was unclear if Watts, who has worked hard in the gym to add size to his developing frame, would be considered for the Demons' NAB Cup opener against Fremantle on February 21.
"We're hoping he can keep improving his body and his fitness and his knowledge of what we require him to do," Williams told melbournefc.com.au.

Interesting that they are hopeful of Round 1 debut!

Bring it on!!

Im not expecting Watts to do a hell of a lot in 2010.

He will do more than this year, but at the end of the day,
he is still just as old as this years draftees and he only
played 4 games this year.

The improvements in young Watts physically are there to
be seen, but 2010 is just a matter of playing consistant
games, staying sound and building more muscle on that frame.

2011 will hopefully be the start of good, consistant performances
from Watts, then from 2012 on its domination.

As our list improves players will need to really earn thier spot. I expect that a first or second year player will need to show excellent (and not just solid pre-season form) to get a game round 1. Same goes for when the season begins. I don't expect that solid performances with Casey will be enought to get a game.

I can see this frustrating a few people this season when thier favourites can't get a run.

For mine it is absolutely essesntial to our improvement and long term success.

Short answer is that Watts will get a game if he is good enough.....exactly as it should be.

We could really look at this as Jack's first season. He is the same age as most of the recent draftees, was built like a twig, barely had a pre-season and played just three games last year. So essentially he is a new recruit for the club and his career starts now.

However, he does have an advantage in that he has spent 12 months at the club and thus knows what is expected of a league footballer, has played in front of some big crowds, and has the monkey off his back following his much publicised debut.

Jack looks as if he has put on a little muscle but has a long way to go- seems as if he has not done alot of the pre season when I saw him train on the 8th of January. Will be treated as a new recruit and may play a game or two in the NAB cup, but would not be surprised if they(MFC) held him back. May even start at Casey and build up to a continous place in the Dees line up.

Great to speak with you Magik on this site- I feel he will play 1st round but after watching him at training Ifeel he may not play the first NAB match.Agree Mills is ahead og him but Newton is a rookie and would need to be promoted to play seniors.
I feel best forward line would be:
HF: GREEN WATTS MILLER
FF: DAVEY BATE JURRAH.

I'll be stoked if he plays Round 1 but I don't think he'll play. In reality Miller and even Newton are ahead of Jack at this stage.

Miller and Newton should never ever be mentioned as being ahead of anyone.

If Jack is fit he should play. We arent going to play finals this year so whats the point in giving guys a game who will be/should be delisted by seasons end.

Watts should definately play if fit and warrants selection but Miller is a certainty. We need him to protect him, Jurrah and the like from defenders bullying tactics

That's a horrible reason to play Miller. He needs to pull his weight not just be a bodyguard. If Miller is horribly out of form which could be likely, he should be dropped regardless.

Think Jamar and Martin might play as a resting ruckman anyway.
