Well, how easy it is to forget how great this guy really was. Saw the re-play on the telly yesterday between North and Hawthorn, and was reminded what a great player he was. Those fantastic strong marks!! No wonder they called him "King". I see great players all the time on the field today, but I tell you what: I wish we had a player as gifted as Wayne in our team today. We would really kick some arse if we did.

The thing I miss more than Carey at his peak, is Bruce McAvaney's commentary of his great footballing feats. Not necessarily that game (I think I mainly heard Peter Landy and Ian Robertson there), but other times when Bruce commentated the 'Night Specialist' North teams of the mid-90s.

Bruce sometimes comes close with his appreciation of Buddy Franklin these days (you know he loves the action when the voice lowers a couple of octaves into that trademark throaty growl), but he'll never trully reach the heights of manlove for Buddy that he had for "KING CAREY!!!" in the mid-90s :D

That was the greatest era of football commentary IMO. Bruce, Dennis Commeti (usually only on West Coast and Fremantle games back then), Drew Morphett, Peter Landy, Ian Robertson, Sandy Roberts, sometimes Don Scott on special comments, and others. I might make a thread about those halcyon days sometime :p

A bit off topic, but yea, Bruce's commentary of Carey's feats always made them that much more "SPECIAL!!!" for me :D

In an era of great players Hird , Voss , Buckley , Harvey etc , Carey was the best .

Maybe not as spectacular as Ablett , but bigger and stronger . As dominant as Ablett was in the late 80's / early 90's , Carey was the same in the late 90's / early 00's .

You are kidding arent you.

I know its a toss up between a player that kicked your teams arse and the other player that kicked your teams arse but no way in the world was Brown better than Carey at there peaks.

Thankyou!! Someone else finally feels the same. The 90's Channel 7 commentary team was the greatest. When 7 lost the rights after 2001 it felt that a little part of the game was lost forever. To me it was the equivilant of seeing Channel 9 lose the rights to Australian cricket. It just wouldn't be the same without the familiar faces of Tony, Bill, Richie, etc. I desperately miss the 90's :(

It is easy to forget how good a player really was after he has retired for several years and lets face it Careys last couple of seasons weren't that flash.
But I have seen no one better in many many years of following football.
Once in a generation player for sure.:thumbsu:

I think i would honestly take J Brown over carey...both in there peak

Just imo

You would probably be the only person on the planet who would.
Carey was one of those players that sometimes just left you speechless as a spectator.

He's had a few poor seasons since retiring, too.

But definitely the best player I've seen, combining much of Ablett's sheer brilliance with the aggression and arrogance of a Brereton and the ruthless efficiency of a Leigh Matthews or a Greg Williams.

You gotta be joking, Carey would kick 200 goals with the stupid ass rules at present. He was a monster and still mark the ball when one guy was grappling around the waist, another was holding his arm and someone else crashing into him. He was just a freak because he was massively strong, good at ground level, was still a fantastic mark with two ****ed shoulders and was a fantastic kick for goal.

I love Brown and would kill to get him at North but if I could get the King of the 90s it would be no contest.

You must have watched a few North games outside of those vs West Coast, because if there was one guy who left Carey speechless (and kickless) as a player, it was the great Glenn Jackovich! :p

I remember Carey reaming us when we first entered the AFL. He still remains my most admired non Port player. His strong one on one, even two or three on one body marks were awe inspiring. His kicks from 50 and even 55, 60 metres were second to none.

I always wanted Tredders to be another Carey, but Wazza played a different role down the ground away from that goal scoring zone most of the time. The likes of Pavlich, Brown and Tredrea are a step below Carey at their best IMHO.

And i'm talking about the Carey that played for Nth Melbourne, not the Crows.

Yes, and Rod 'Curly' Austin often beat Matthews.

Still Carey is probably the 2nd best player of the last 40 years after Matthews.

J Brown not in the top 20.

The measure of a player is how he is measured and remembered. Every great forward is compared to Wayne Carey.

That's why he is and always will be the greatest.

He could swing a game off his own boot. At training I imagine all the North players practiced running out of the 50. There was a final against North that West Coast were dominating, up by 5 or so goals until The Duck decided that that wasn't on at all, and that was that. We lost by about 3 goals.

I think people claimed Jacko had the wood over Carey because he won a fair few of the battles, the major issue against West Coast of that erea was that your midfield was massively better than our midfield and Carey was often starved of opportunities against the eagles, the games where we managed to get a fair slice of the ball I think Carey really dominated those games.

We invariably struggled a bit with the sides that had a much better midfield. Not that we were shabby there but some teams in the 90s had very good midfields.

Silvagni played Carey better than Jakovich.

that may or may not be true but in one of carey's most important games of his career "Peter Caven kicked the Roo boy's ass!" :)

but still Carey at his best was unstoppable! I use to to love watching him play! he was just Sen-bloody-sational!

Good point. There was one game, 98 I think it was, where carey and Jakovich played one out and Carey kicked five to half time, including one stunning goal on the run. Jakovich was a great, great player, but Carey was just the best.
