From the comments i've heard and seen, I don't think many people have ACTUALLY been to Dingley.

There is no comparison to Seaford or Tullamarine in terms of where it is and accessibility for players.

Even less comparison for a players perspective to get to. Bayside to Dingley as your daily commute for work? That's a dream.

Inner city is all well and good - but the turf where the Demons and Pies train is hardly that good and their facilities are fairly tiny, particularly the Demons who have to share AAMI Park with 3 other sides. There's also no capacity for them to expand - same with Richmond. We are already in the outer eastern suburbs so moving to a different one isn't going to hamper player retention/recruitment if we can already get people to the club when they have to go to Mulgrave.
One of the great things about Dingley is the capacity to expand and redevelop in the years ahead which a lot of clubs won't be able to do. As Rich Vandenberg said on Hawks Insiders, it's possible the centre will be out of date in 20 years, however, we'll have the capacity for it to be whatever we need it to from a spatial perspective.

Not every player lives bayside though. Quite a few players live inner-city.

But have we really got people to come to the club lately? Ladder position aside...

Is there a train line nearby? Possible detour for a future station for games/training/students coming for the sports science university?

Since being situated in Mulgrave - plenty, yes.

A better render

But I'm not about their version of John Kennedy

Not so much "Don't Think...DO!" as much as "Hey Trev, fetch me the torque wrench will ya?"
Gonna cost heaps in broken window repairs to the main building

Not smart having the goal square there

So a Dingley move wouldn't really change their lives/commute much.

The media commentary would make you think you need to pack your passport to get to Dingley

As someone who hates driving 3 suburbs over in Melbourne's infinitely tedious traffic - I would actually rather long-haul fly somewhere than drive to Dingley. In terms of players already living in these parts - you are dead on. Players already making the commute to Mulgrave won't care about the commute to Dingley.

I guess if a club is situated inner city - all fans across Melbourne can get there to watch training, hang about, do whatever

Dingley will only serve the southeast fans.

Maybe clubs don't really care if fans come to training grounds anymore.

It's not important

Collingwood, Richmond, Cartlon and Melbourne train inner city, and excluding finals, there is barely anyone there.

Being in Dingley, Hawthorn or Mulgrave isn't effecting our training supporter numbers.

What is important is the facilities and the location for the players and staff.

I walk through the footy precincts regularly - the number of supporters attending training sessions is minimal unless big finals are on. There's more people walking their dogs or doing exercise of their own than actually watching the sides train.

Give it a try, it wasn't as bad as driving in the Richmond or CBD. Dingley Village is pretty good if you need to get something after checking out the Kennedy Centre.

Oh I will definitely be heading over once built. And driving in the suburbs isn't that bad - it's getting out of the inner suburbs which is bloody annoying and for some reason the Monash is where trucks who want to do 20km over the speed limit go to play slalom with trucks that want to do 20km under the speed limit - and all of them want to do it in the right hand lanes. I used to have a lot of clients for work on that side of town so it was always a good excuse to make a detour via Mulgrave and check things out.

I would expect any players living closer to the city wouldn't have much trouble with traffic. Morning traffic in Melbourne is mostly heading into the city and then the opposite in the evenings. And I'm pretty sure the players day is mostly done well before the afternoon rush hour starts anyway.

Cruising half an hour in a free Nissan, not stressing about car parking and then spending each day in a world class training facility is hardly a challenge to overcome. It certainly sound better than cramming onto a packed train to travel an hour plus each way into the CBD every day like a lot of people do.

I found Wilson's comments a bit odd tbh, we left Glenferrie years ago, that ship has sailed. I would have thought that part of the reason for moving to a facility like Dingley was to try to get a bit of soul back, make it a bit easier to interact with fans and the community.
An important component of the Dingley site is that the Club owns the land. Glenferrie Oval, as much as it was our beloved home for decades, was always Council property. Even if it had the room to expand, (which it doesn’t) I don’t think Boroondara Council would ever welcome us back. Anyway, our supporters often live further out in the Southeastern ‘burbs, these days. To have the room to provide for training, Club functions, Past Players’ needs and supporter requirements all in one place could help bring the Club together again. It would be nice to have the feeling of a place like Glenferrie again, where everyone can come and be welcome. Waverley was far from perfect. Dingley is a clean slate and it’s ours. The Club can make it a great fit for all the segments of Hawthorn.

Bring back the social club!

Listening to Vanders this afternoon he stated the players are really excited about how good the Kennedy centre is going to be and have already started moving to bayside suburbs.

Lewis mentioned last week at the announcement that he lives 10 minutes away and that others are in Highett, Bentleigh and surrounds, so I’m laughing at opposition fans and media suggesting this is anything close to “when Saints moved to Seaford”.

For the record from Westfield Southland to Dingley is an 8 minute drive.
I grew up in Vermont south, and now live in Moorabbin. Took getting used to (3-6 months) but love this south side of Melbourne and dingley closer to Brighton, Elwood, Stkilda, Windsor than Waverley and from Richmond etc difference is negligible.

I’m very bullish about this development and will be great for the club. From what I’ve heard there will be function room for hire for weddings etc. there will be good income steams.

How was essendons new facility a failure?
It’s yuk. It’s an architecturally designed space out of shipping containers in a cold heartless pocket. As a player I could live in Mornington, balnarring, flinders etc and it will take 35-40 minutes to dingley. From Richmond to Tullamarine could take 1 hour on a bad day.
