We better not make a straight swap Jackson Paine for Patrick Karnezis (Edit: too bad, we did)

Jackson Paine will come good, this is a terrible trade. And before the hero worshippers jump on my back about our supposed god-like recruiting - Jordan Russell, Clinton Young and Quinten Lynch say hello. That was 3 sh*t recruits just last year (Russell cost nothing, but still silly. He is awful), all of which blind Freddie could see failing. How quickly people forget. Not having a go at our overall recruiting, but they do make mistakes like everyone else.

I can see Karnezis becoming a valuable player, but that was too high a price. We will regret this decision.

we all new last yrs recruits weren't going to win us flag you gotta look past these players and see the effect it had on our VFL side who made the finals with some senior players playing VFL. Bigger picture people!!

Lets bump this thread when Patty Karnezis plays his 100th game for the Pies and is a premiership player.

But in all seriousness Karnezis has what Paine and Russell don't have. Infact thinking about it, Russell would have been the perfect match up for Paine if they were playing each other. Neither are tall enough to be key position but neither are athletic enough to be 3rd talls. You can't really make Paine any taller and you can't see him becoming quicker and more agile. Karny has the athletic attributes now all we have to do is get him mentally right and I believe he will be a very good player for us.

He'll be a solid VFL player and nothing more than that. He hasn't got the pace, build or tackle intensity at all in his game and he just isn't big enough to ever develop into a big body FF, at best he'll be an average 3rd tall option and I'd rather have White, Lynch or Reid play that role.

Karnezis may not be a superstar but he'll provide a hell of a lot more flexibility and utility than Paine could.
This.

Paine is a very good VFL player. AT AFL level he'd be a 3rd tall forward type who's slow and has poor agility.

Not a good option in todays game.

I don't think Karnezis is one dimensional. He has shown he can play as a mid-sized forward, wingman or off a back flank. Has decent pace, endurance and footskills are on par. His problem is defensive. Clearly fell out of favour with Voss so I doubt we have seen his best just yet.

On the other hand, Paine has a lot of upside too. But he is a long way down the pecking order now with White on board, Lynch and Reid all on the list as well.

He had a solid year at VFL without ever dominating. I actually think he has a lot of upside and would prefer to keep developing him. However will not be dissapointed to make this trade. I think Karnezis offers something different and there is a lot of potential there.

Lynch won't play a game in 2014. Well please let this be so, guy was a hack this year!

The way I see it both players have weaknesses, however id do the deal as I think Karnezis's weaknesses can be overcome whereas I am not sure Paines can, particularly with Cloke in the side.

Paine seems on the slow side, is not so agile, needs to improve his defensive side and has concerns over his height to play KPF. That's not good for a guy who would have to play second fiddle to Cloke as he would need to be more agile and work up the ground to give Cloke space and help him get more 1:1 opportunities. Jesse White does provide this which is why he has been brought in.

Karnezis just needs to work on his defensive side. If he can do that we have a 190cm third tall/mid with pace, skill and a bit of X factor. We have a need for this.

He will get plenty of opportunities at Brisbane they are devoid of KPF prospects. They even have to play their FB at FF. Will be even worse when Johnno Brown hangs them up. So god luck to Jackson if true.

Seems pretty even for both sides and keeps goodwill which might mean they stay away from our Pick 10 target at #7.

Change the thread title to this....

They can take whoever they want with pick 7. As long as the good will means they stay away from Beams when he is a free agent.

I keep hearing this but what about #9?

I hope that is not the plan, after reading that apparently Jackson Paine has been in Brisbane looking around.

I like the way Paine goes about it, and I think he has a future. I know with White and Lynch along with Cloke and Reid up forward, the likelihood of Paine breaking through next year will be hard, but Karnezis is not a fair swap for Paine surely. I can't believe he didn't get a game this year, because he seemed to kick 3's and 4's in the Twos, and looked alright. Might be like a Black for North, spent years honing his skills in the Werribee side, now look at him.

my opinion of Paine is that he could be a DECENT forward (never great) given the lead out the goalsquare contested marking role. Unfortunately he has to be second fiddle to clokey and he cant play in the ruck so that rules out forward-cum-ruckman. he also cant play the gunston role as he has poor agility and foot speed so we'd sacrifice too much in the forward pressure department. He is very one dimensional, he needs the circumstances to be very suited to him because he wouldnt be able to adapt particularly well. Square peg round role.

In saying all that, for what we would get out of Paine it is a worthy trade. Karnezis actually plays a role for us, especially seeing as Seedsman, williams and broomhead are all young rebounding defenders and a proven depth player with potential will be of use to us.

I love Paine's attitude, I think he will be able to forge out a 50-150 game career elsewhere.

A Brisbane based footy writer for Fairfax & independent blog writer (& Collingwood supporter) mentioned on another forum quite some time ago that he was singularly unimpressed with PK, in particular noting that he is lazy, lacks defensive skills & nous.

If PK is with "us" I bloody hope the coaches get him to work on his attitude. Hopefully, he develops an appetite to learn & to work hard.

I agree with much of the sentiment regarding Paine. I would have liked to have kept him & if he didn't progress in 2014 use him for trade in the following trade period for the 2015 draft.

Now then is the time for Gault to showcase his wares. Hopefully he puts some serious time in the Gym & show us what he can do.

He did not get a game last year no way he will with White now at the club

Karneziz could be the HFF FP that we could use we have Elliot as a FP but we need another permanent forward

Both starved of opportunities its a good swap for both teams

We have down played Karnesis trade value based on him only playing 3 games this year. Hard to argue a kid who did not even play a game is worth more.

Therefore a fair trade IMO.

Well, I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is a terrible trade that will bite us badly. I think Paine could develop into a useful tall forward, they dont grow on trees, whereas what Karnezis brings is more dime a dozen and readily accessible. Worse than the decision to trade out Young and bring in Russell. To me, the potential benefit from holding Paine and seeing if he can come on more than outweighs any benefit PK could bring to the table. Not worth it.

Hope to God I'm wrong, but this one has really deflated me to be honest after an otherwise good trade period. Wth any luck it will confirm that I know nothing about football, PK blossoms and Paine sinks without trace. Just got a very bad feeling about this one.

I think PK has a higher cieling than Paine, the trick will be finding his trigger - hopefully his boyhood passion for following the pies sparks his ambition.
