This is a hypothetical I suppose but it just struck me that there should still be some other options here:

Geelong gain: pick 5 (bris)
Brisbane gain: beams, Christensen
Collingwood gain: greenwood, Varcoe, pick 21 (bris)
North gain: pick 25

Works well if you consider

Geelong spend varcoe and Christensen for pick 5
Lions spend 5,21,25 for beams and Christensen
Pies spend beams gain greenwood, Varcoe, 21
North spend greenwood for 25

There might be pick upgrades happening here too if any teams needs a sweetener??!!

Swap pick 30 in that trade for the player that wants out of collingwood and to Melbourne and it makes a lot more sense.

Actually I feel we ned some devine intervention and I know someone who knows tge Collingwood Chaplain so I sent him the following text message

Can you please give the Collingwood Chaplain a call and ask him to talk to the club about family values and being compassionate towards players who want to be with their families. If he could do this prior to 2pm next Thursday it would be appreciated

Don't know if I've got this right but in the 2011 trade period didn't a proposed trade between Essendon and Gold Coast for Caddy go to mediation with the AFL? I know the deal didn't get done but could Beams and/or the Lions request this?

Absolutely!

From memory, Essendon got wind that Goddard was OTL for them prior to the AFL arbitration meeting and went in half-arsed

Right now I'm 60% confident he'll be traded (to us). Nothing to support that, just guts. Which aren't feeling great.

I share your 60% optimism as surely it has to get done but it is the pies we are dealing with so who knows..
I feel the club are happy to take 5 and 25 to the draft but if the dogs somehow squeezed pick 4 out of GWS, then it is in the best interest of the club to get Beams done. The lions apparently don't rate the forwards in this years draft? But then again they said they wouldn't match picks 2 or 3 for the academy boys and look what happened...

I still consider we have won this even if we don't get Beams.

We have from the outset stood fast with out loosing any players - Win
We have picks 5 and 25 - Win
Collingwood keep a player who doesn't want to be there - Loose
Collingwood miss out on 2 picks in the top 30 - Loose.

I'm 65%. I think the reason why we moved on 21 so quickly is that we know Collingwood need 25 for greenwood. Unless another player decides to up and go they won't be able to facilitate that trade. 3 picks or anything that consumes 3 list spots into 1 just doesn't work for us given the balance our list. It would rob us of depth and ensure we had at least 2-3 spuds joining us this year which isn't worth it.

Once Collingwood are under real pressure to get the greenwood trade done they'll come back to the table.

Imagine if they leave this trade period with a massively disgruntled beams, H gone for Varcoe and missed out on Greenwood, they'd be happy with Darcy Moore but geez that would be a losing offseason.

That compared to disgruntled beams out effectively for 5 and greenwood, still H out for Varcoe and 5 and 30 ready for the draft. Much better outcome for the future.

I think as balme said, in a perfect world Christensen would be worth a 10-15 pick, Varcoe may not be worth the upgrade to 5, but that is softened with the pies getting 21.

Still don't see any losers here? Maybe Geelong could upgrade a pick with the pies to chip a little value back on their pick 5?

Well Collingwood states they are only trying to get best deal possible out of respect for Beams, I say bullshit, they got a fair offer and turned it down, What about respecting Beams wishes to be close to his father and accept that offer....

Collingwood runs the AFL so I'm not sure it would help.

I agree the value doesen't stack up perfectly, but my response would be... Because their issue is about 'ready made' replacements so as they don't go backwards, they have made it clear they arnt desperate for picks.. They are actively seeking Varcoe out, I would say we could add cats second rounder but I think they will hold onto this for Clark.
