List Mgmt. We Got Him! Beams Trade Discussion (Not the Hype Thread)

Well pals and gals, how confident is everyone that Beams is a Lion in 2015 at this stage? Give me a %.

Right now I'm 60% confident he'll be traded (to us). Nothing to support that, just guts. Which aren't feeling great.
55% bit find myself hoping we also still have a decent draft pick so won't be completely shattered if we dont.

How are Lions fans feeling now that the Beams trade seems unlikely? Missing a big opportunity or not too concerned?

Not a troll BTW - genuinely curious.
Not too concerned, and still confident that we will get him. Either way, we made the right choice to stick by our young blokes...

After nahnah pointed out "thebrowndog" sponsored karnezis in 2012, I would like to refute this claim.

Figure 1 - This image is far too large but I'm not sure how to resize m8s

Here we have the image in black and white, with me so far? GUYS?

Figure 2 - This was a waste of time

Performing sobel edge detection in MATLAB however, leads to an interesting (or extremely stupid) but mainly interesting result, as shown in figure 2.

If we then enhance the image, we can clearly see "thebrowndog" is engaging in a secret game of tetris. With who? Who knows?

something something beams collingwood unreasonable eddie mcguire swann sticking up for club this post is relevant and interesting

Christensen for Pick 21 is a great outcome for us. I will miss Patfull, and I think we will struggle for a while to cover for him.

Although I'm probably reiterating most Lions supporters' thoughts- I'm happy to keep 5 & 25, totally unwilling to trade one of the 'untouchables'. Of course would love Beams, he's a champ, it'd be great, but as it stands we are already ahead this trade period, no need to give that up.

The angst-driven and frustrated Pies supporters on our board need to realise that, trading a 5 + Aish for Beams is not about saying "F U to Pies" as much as us just trying to repair and keep intact our currently fragile culture. The club invested heavily, made significant changes, hired basically a new department of staff, and went to painstaking attempts last year to try to determine that ALL our draft targets were at least showing more positive signs, and to look after them better to avoid the GH5 ever happening again. In doing so, the club would have made assurances to Aish, Taylor, Cutler etc about supporting them and so on. How would we then look if we turn around and say, well James, we can get Dayne Bloody Beams now, so nick off to Victoria? We would be right pr**ks, and the trust between club and playing group would be shattered.

IMO, trading Redden (seems to be the 'untouchable' cropping up the most in these hypotheticals) for Beams leaves our midfield basically in the same position, so why the hell would we then essentially just give the Pies pick 5? In the eyes of 17 other clubs probably, Beams >> Redden, but to me, Redden is THAT important to our club, to our structure, and what the club is trying to do, that Redden = Beams. It's not just about playing ability.

I think the Karnezis-Paine trade can show both sides can be equitable at the trade table. I don't think it's any different with the Beams saga- I'm sure it's not over yet, despite this bogus 'deadline' having passed, and I don't think the clubs themselves are anywhere near as combative or poles apart as it is suggested. Pies have just said they're willing to open the floor to other clubs, even if no other club has a realistic shout other than us. This may yet change if Beams changes his thinking in some way. We are not budging significantly from our offer, we are not desperate for Beams to come ASAP, and for that I am proud of the Lions.

Small edit: there's plenty of Lions supporters that totally enjoy saying "F U" to Pies supporters.... but I stand by my point. My fiancee is a Pies supporter, which means I'm living proof that we can get along!!!

(during the off-season... or maybe now only SOME of the off-season...)

TBH I'm a little bit flat if we knocked back that picks deal and or if that 5 team trade was really that close, dayne is a marquee player, a top 10 mid and I really wanted to see the beams family be granted their wishes. I think we should have jumped at that picks deal if it was there, ahead of landing Bundy.

Happy if the Christensen deal goes ahead, but slightly concerned about what is going on in his personal life, I trust leppas judgement on that.

I still see a lot playing out in the next week, Aish for me is a big one, why has he not signed? There is more to come with this, I still hope dayne beams is playing for us next year.

FWIW I think the Lions did the right thing by not trading a player - unless someone wanted to leave. You couldn't afford to tap anyone on the shoulder after last year and the Fev fiasco. Sounds like things got pretty close with picks, but think you need to move on as this one is now dead. I really don't think that Hine and co are bluffing.

We're not moving anywhere until 5PM on Thursday. Pies can stick to their word and walk away themselves if they want to. Doubt that will be happening though as I expect more drama between both clubs next week.

Of course we'll still take your calls, but we'll take others too. Hence the rumours today now about GWS & Melbourne readying offers.
There's a good poster that explained the arbitrary deadline on our board (post #11,625) better than I can right now. It's very late!

FWIW I still believe we'll get a deal done with the Lions, but there'll be much more huffing and puffing from all and sundry yet.
There might be more dealing and huffing and puffing, but you're not getting your hands on Aish.

From many of the reports t got very complicated and very close.
I would think if the pies can get n in principle agreement from northbto accept 25 forvgreenwood, and we were in a position to add Perhaps Lester or Golby it might get done. Eithrr way welcom Christensen

Possibly right, I don't know, it's just my gut feeling about it. The 'deadline' is BS, if Brisbane rocked up with a last minute offer we liked, we wouldn't turn them away because they missed 'the deadline'.

Expecting lots of rumours next week about it all, at any rate lol.
Collingwood clearly playing this for the crowd as much as they are for a result.

At least the deadline has provided a psychological break for each club and some space to re-evaluate. The grandiose media release was really stupid.

A bit tired of the Aish rumours. Sadly they'll hang around until he 're-signs. Surely if he wasn't going to stay he'd give us a nudge now so we'd get these Beams deal done and send him to the crows. I'm actually confident he will stay.

Interesting - all along Collingwood have been mouthing off about how they want a player because they don't want another rookie pick (25); then the thing falls over because they finally add pick 21 and we had already earmarked that for Christensen.
The bit about us not valuing Beams as highly as them is so churlish. Frankly I hope they don't do the deal and then flounder in their own mess next year. And miss out on Varcoe and Greenwood.

I'm pretty sure Peter Schwab said on SEN this afternoon that the pick 21 to GFC for Christensen is as good as done. Just pending medicals.

Yep was listening to this and that's definately what he said. Sounded very flat re Beams trade and got the feeling then Beams trade wasn't going to happen. When asked if other clubs had come into the trade ie 3 way trade he said that it had never got to that point. Really proud of the club for its "untouchable" attitude and making a statement about our players. Love the romance of brothers playing together and given the family circumstances would have been great for them. But can't miss what we never had. Wish Dayne Beams the best of luck and hope he ends up somewhere else and wins the Brownlow. For us we have gained Christensen. Really big thing from him to make a personal decision that he has to leave family/friends behind to start a new life, so shows a fair bit of character on his behalf. Still have pick 5 and a bloke in Leppa who continues to grow in stature. Looking forward to Clayton joining us and this warms my Royboy heart....love a father/son story. Thought we showed some class in the trade with Patfull. Proud of my club today. A lot to look forward to.

Just like a few other Lions, I'm more than happy how the Club have played this one out.
Yeah, a little disappointed we weren't able to secure Dayne (yet!), but also more than happy that we've got pick 5 and going to use it on another gun youngster.
And off topic, well done to Joel for his fantastic career - we're going to miss your dependability/leadership down back.

Still wouldn't be surprised if a 5 way deal is worked....
Brisbane IN: Beams
Brisbane OUT: 5, 25
Collingwood IN: 5, Varcoe, Greenwood,
Collingwood OUT: Beams, 30
Geelong IN: Clark
Geelong OUT: Varcoe
North IN: 25
North OUT: Greenwood
Melbourne IN: 30
Melbourne OUT: Clark

Sure this is fair for all?

Not really a five way situation, just them accepting what we are offering. What they do with it is up to them.

Don't know if I've got this right but in the 2011 trade period didn't a proposed trade between Essendon and Gold Coast for Caddy go to mediation with the AFL? I know the deal didn't get done but could Beams and/or the Lions request this?
