We have become such a well-oiled and cohesive team because of our pressure and our ball movement no doubt, but also because of our discipline. Remember last year when it felt like we were sucked in to every contest too often? We'd have three guys getting drawn to every ground ball or every marking contest down the line. This year we are substantially better at trusting each other to halve or win contests, and we're holding our width more because of it. It means we've always got space covered and always got a Swan in a dangerous position.

This was no more evident than in the build-up to our final goal of the game.

Rowbottom wins the ball on the half back flank and kicks it to Gulden as we prepare to transition down the line.

Gulden plays on with a nice kick to McDonald. We've gone from half back to half forward with one kick, but notice Rowbottom about the middle of the screen keeping his width along the edge of the centre square.

A few short passes as we look to head inside 50, but again, notice Rowbottom pop in to the screen, this time through the centre square. He's following the play but keeping space between it and himself.

We then enter inside 50 with a central kick from Gulden (who himself has worked to get a second disposal in this chain) and it's tapped into the space.

And who should end up with the ball? The player who has maintained that space and kept that central line the whole time.

He then gets it to Heeney who kicks the sealer. There would be literally dozens of examples of our players maintaining their positions rather than being sucked into the play. This was just the most notable to me for a number of reasons. One being that it shows the level of confidence our boys have in each other to compete in a contest without needing half a dozen crumbers to be at the feet. Two being that we have the ball users like Gulden to execute error-free plays so that those crumbers simply aren't needed. Three being that it speaks volumes about our discipline that our contested inside mid is prepared to stay out of the play for the sake of structure. And four because it results in a very good team goal.

This is why we're not seeing the vacant forward line or the vacant corridor anymore. Swans be constantly presenting and able to get to every ball and every contest at any spot on the ground. Kudos to the players and coaches.

And while I'm at it, a few great moments of game sense from two of our youngsters.

Firstly Gulden. In this play Harmes is out, can go direct to their forward 50 as we've left the open side unmanned. Gulden closes the space, takes his eyes completely off the ball, and takes Harmes out. Gives away the free, yes, but more importantly stops Harmes in action and gives us time to set up our defence.

And second is Stephens. Paddy earns a free and Stephens as a kid with blood rushing to the head is entitled to take possession and take the advantage. Instead he looks up, sees there's nothing in front of him, and decides against it, giving us time to set up ahead of the ball.

And just another moment I liked was Stephens' handball to set up our first goal. Hayward's snap sure was impressive but equally as impressive was the awareness and slick hands from Stephens to get it to him.

That handball by Stephens was a beauty. The way he takes the tackler, and then jumps so that he can get the handball over the tackler, but deliver it straight into Haywards arms so that he could get the kick off. Was the perfect option and perfect execution that gave Hayward as much time as possible to get a kick off.

Two questions:

1. Is the Gary Ayres Medal not a bit flawed in it's conception, given that it's inevitably going to favour players who play in four finals, rather than three? Parker is off to a flyer but now misses a game to score votes. Punished in the context of this award just for being on the winner's list.
I think they're multiplying the GF votes by 1.3x or 1.5x this year to account for that possibility.

So do i , but it's the romance of it . More of my life is with the new one , but the other looks good and so many even in Sydney love the red V .It's sad that someone can't embrace the history . Hope it didn't go to Bankstown to watch the ressies wear the red V and who knows why they did
Don't talk about me as an 'it'... it's rude.

And it's not sad, it just different. I haven't asked you to change or not love it as much as you do...

That statement is pathetic! It's just a bloody personal preference.

Well i have no idea what gender you are . Just want to know what group your talking about .
We have a great win , everyone is happy and you have bring up stuff like that !

Surely 2016 must have felt like it would be a premiership year. Finished on top of the ladder and it was only due to an act of grand larceny that we were denied it.
2016? I don't recall there being a Premiership awarded that season.

Maybe it's just me but I thought it was painfully obvious that the 'group' referred to was Vic supporters. I.e. using the Red V jumper for their nostalgia/benefit.

Maybe you missed it, but there was no need to go on and on about it.

All i asked for clarity and never got it , thanks for your feedback

Happened other ways before. Be interesting to see what happened
Only when stadiums have not been available, once in Perth (clashed with Rugby) and once in Sydney (NRL finals @ ANZ). No other times from memory. Cats have already have to play at their opponent's home ground, no chance they give up an extra day's rest as well. Plus Sat twilight for Swans means no competition from NRL.
