Couldn't agree more. When you've got unrealistic confidence in yourself, and don't know what you don't know for want of a better expression, it's pretty incredible what you can achieve.

Have seen that first hand – people launch careers into the stratosphere on the back of extreme but completely natural self belief.
With Buddy the stars aligned in that he had that extreme self belief coupled with an off the chart athletic profile.

Compare Budweiser to Tom Boyd. Similar athletic potential but one player was racked with self doubt throughout his career and the other probably never doubted himself for a second.

Mind you there are the Mitch Thorpes of the world who have the self belief but not the talent (or work ethic).

That's probably something else we don't give Buddy enough credit for, he has obviously looked after his body very well to maintain his longevity.

character > confidence
Whatever one might say about Boyd, he was a good guy to have around the club and turned the grand final (should've been awarded the Norm Smith).
It's not fair to compare him to Buddy - an all-time great - and say he wasn't as good bc of his depression, rather look to those who never achieved anything close to what he did, but had just as much talent and loads of confidence, and zero self-doubt, like Thorp.

Greatness is a rarity and comes randomly.
There is no formula for it.

Just one more thing, Glenn Archer said he had persistent self-doubts throughout his career.
One of the toughest players ever, and a bloody good one too.

Thorp was talented, but he was a runt off-field.
You don't get delisted a week before round 1 if you're doing the right thing

As for Max. Don't underestimate what a tough start can do for a forward. I don't think Franklin develops how he does if he had an easy first season. He learnt where to lead to get the ball, etc

At some point development isn’t further progressed if players stay at the lower level, and it can also have inverse impact, I don’t think that’s their yet but dgb and Ramsden aren’t far off
If he is getting 25 touches, 8 marks and kicking 5 goals every week at VFL I’d agree with you.

No need to elevate him prematurely when he’s got another 2.5 years on his contract to run. Just let the kid grow into himself first.

He will improve faster at afl now, then a few games in vfl and finals and it will be the perfect year for him
