Is the view that he isn't ready for AFL because of his body? As in, the big bodied defenders in the AFL would eat him alive?

Aren't there big bodied defenders in the VFL too?

I don't mind giving him a taste (2-3 games) soon and see what he can do.

He can always go back to BH later to improve what he is lacking.
Patience guys Lewis is hopefully only a month away once he is in the side we can have Max play along side him if his form warrants it

I’m not advocating bringing him in ahead of time but assuming he is good enough to contribute by the end of the year or next year the difference it would make to our structure with him and Lewis down forward could be significant. It gives us targets we don’t have now which will help with the decision-making of the mids when they lift their eyes. But also if he can be competitive as a ruck even in just the forward fifty we can afford to drop one pure ruckman and the remaining ruck will only have to cover two thirds of the field, reducing the impact of their mobility issues. They can drop back to help the defence as soon as we push forward knowing Ramma can handle the ruck duties in the forward third. Is that too simplistic?!!

I really liked what I saw watching him live. I was sitting on the second level, slightly right of the left point post (on TV), in the Great Southern Stand, so I had a pretty good view of our forwards and defenders. You can see he has the physical attributes, and you can see he has the Football IQ. He doesn't infringe upon the leading patterns of those around him, and he knows when it's his time to go for the football. He also moves incredibly well for someone his size. He can push up to stoppages and track back fast enough to take marks inside the 50. It will be very interesting to see if we believe he's good enough that we don't have to use our top pick on a key position player. I hope that is the case.

He's not ready is my read based on the vision. He's like a young giraffe the way he moves.

But damn what a prospect he looks. Super excited the way he was winning the ball all over the place, shades of a young Mitch Lewis and even a little bit more based on those highlights.

Which highlights?

Devil’s advocate, his ready we just are not playing him because he would be the main forward in our current setup.

At the 2004 National Draft Hawthorn selected Franklin with pick 5. Buddy made his AFL debut at 18 years of age in Round 1 2005 against Sydney at the SCG, he received a Rising Star nomination in Round 4. In nine seasons with Hawthorn Franklin led the club’s goal kicking in six consecutive seasons from 2007 to 2012 and won the Coleman Medal as the league’s leading goal kicker in 2008 and 2011.

I’m not saying his Buddy but his ready to be thrown in the deep end, we just need to have a forward there to support. Why it sounds crazy but playing Sicily forward and allowing dgb and blank to fill the gaps might offer a better forward structure for us and let Sicily float back and sub blank if his having a bad day.

Buddy was also a first round draft pick. Rather than Ramsden being a very late developer.

Everyone develops at their own rate. I’m not fussed if Ramsden doesn’t play this year. It’s what best for his development so he can be the best player in 4-5 years down the track.

At some point development isn’t further progressed if players stay at the lower level, and it can also have inverse impact, I don’t think that’s their yet but dgb and Ramsden aren’t far off

Buddy was a first round pick and one of the best players to ever play the game. He was an athletic freak from day one.

It's kind of unfair to compare him to pick 6 of a MSD, a player that was overlooked in an entire regular and rookie draft (or did he not nominate?).

If he does get a run in the seniors then I hope he plays more as a mobile tall forward.

It's Lewis were waiting on. We will all of a sudden have a decent forward structure to kick to. Means Greene becomes the 3rd tall which is his role and could become more dangerous knowing his not the main guy down there. Can play strictly as a lead up forward pushing up to half forward/wing.

I understand, we could hardly do worse than our current forward line. And he's ready in the sense that Riley Tilthorpe was in his first year, and any other tall who has debuted season one.

The one thing I'd say about any Bud comparison though, is that it's him. He's a generational talent, who came in as a flanker not the main or even second banana in the bunch. He was wired differently in the confidence department too, and had Dixon, Holland and Williams in the forward line with him I(along with goal kicking smalls in Brown and Osborne).

But mainly, I think Buddy wrote his own history on the back of superstar talent and confidence, and the freedom to play a flank.

I always reckon that one of Buddy’s best attributes (apart from being a six foot six athletic freak) was his confidence.

He could miss his first four shots on goal from right in front (including a couple of out of bounds on the full) but he wouldn’t give a flying continental and he’d keep presenting and end up with something ridiculous like 6 goals 8 behinds.

Nothing ever seemed to upset him in the field either, he’d just keep doing his thing no matter what happened.

Couldn't agree more. When you've got unrealistic confidence in yourself, and don't know what you don't know for want of a better expression, it's pretty incredible what you can achieve.

Have seen that first hand – people launch careers into the stratosphere on the back of extreme but completely natural self belief.

Max kinda reminds me of Nathan Thompson. And boy could we use one of them right now.

That’s sometimes half the challenge with lower draft picks, maybe the more apt comparison is roughy, both generational legends though but the point stands they got to play significant game time in year 1 setting up for year two.

I assume that’s going to happen but we need this bloke developing as fast as possible because he is good enough.
