Only a year extension from his 2025 deal but still good to get done

Classic case of him outperforming expected output so Young/McDougal have come back to the club and asked for more (Young mentioned this tactic in his backchat interview)

Good to see we looked after him, obviously value him highly

I have it on very good authority that Hawthorn have continued to stay in contact with Johnson FWIW, seems obvious to hear but my source is rock solid on this one

wdym continued? were they into him before?

I wish we got him to sign on for as long as Amiss
He probably wants to increase his value and the club wants to have a better impression what they will get. Fair call on both side.

A second year keyforward in Rising star contention leading the clubs goalkicking is just much more of a priority signing.

He appears to have a sense of self that doesn't have much room for losing or underperformance.

Is there a market for giving away fifties?

Did this guy intentionally try stay on the opposite side of the field and not come off knowing they were trying to sub him and then look salty af on the bench or was it my imaginings?? If he did, he's my new favorite.
Didn't deserve to be subbed off so I don't blame him.

We got smacked in the middle so subbed off our biggest mid.

Stupid.

There was a stoppage right near the goals, city end, where Patrick Cripps laid into Johnson. Just stiff-armed the living suitcase out of him. It shocked and unnerved Johnson.

When he starts doing that to blokes himself - and gets away with it - is when he will have arrived.

Until then he's just a kid learning the caper.

Or...when Ras notices it and takes matters into his own hands at the next stoppage.

They're both just kids learning the caper.

You've got to be joking? Didn't deserve to be subbed off? What game were you watching mate?
There were bigger spuds that should've been subbed off instead. I'd crack the shits too if the dummy up top was trying to sub me off too.

Big MJ fan but the kid seriously looks to have trouble covering the ground. Seems to waddle around.

Am also yet to see this much talked about kicking of his other than a few set shots at goal. It's odd all the talk pre draft was he was a great kick but questions over contested footy. Looks great in the contest but not that see great by foot so far.

Is there any theory on why he slid?

i remember earlier in the year mathew lloyd was talking about LDU and why he had improved a lot since late last year. he said it all involved him sitting down and being taught to know where to run post contest. MJ is apparently a great runner. however, post contest i agree, he lacks decisiveness and purpose to his running. an instinctive knowledge on where to get the ball next. classic example of it being done well is brayshaw (particularly last year).

There's a difference between being fit as we would consider it and being ruled fit enough to play in the AFL. I suspect he is still carrying that corky.

I remember Lyon saying that it was important to get consistent games into the young players to toughen them up, effectively teaching them that they can play when their body isn't 100% right and to make it really hurt by the end of the year so they work hard over preseason to avoid that burn out later next season.

Unlike Cripps to pick on a smaller, less experienced opponent. Very unusual 🙄

I tell myself this is what we are doing this year with all the blokes seemingly playing injured. Teaching them they can take it.

It's how I get to sleep at night when we get battered by bottom 6 clubs.
