We are not one quality defender short, our midfield got spanked and our defense was flooded. We held up quite well until 3 qtr time. Chappy needs to be injected into the wing or center bounce for reasons repeatedly demonstrated this season.
Agree to disagree. If you think Ryan's performance on JUH eas adequate then that is fine. I don't.

Cox was playing on JUH for the vast majority of the time when he kicked his goals. Ryan was barely on him. Hughes also spent time on JUH in the second half.

Doesn't make sense though. If Cox was assigned JUH the Ryan or Hughes should have been free to come and help as the third man up, which is what Cox usually does. They rarely did that. Who was Ryan supposed to be playing on?

Watch the replay or even just check the highlights. Hughes was on JUH for one of his goals but the rest were when Cox was manning him. Cox had five goals kicked on him this game including two by Naughton. He was woeful despite his 30 possessions. Ryan played on everyone including Lobb when Lobb was forward and Ryan was also the loose player a fair bit.

Cox was literally the only guy playing defence in the first quarter. He had more spoils and intercept marks and possessions than anyone else on the ground. What that tells me is that he was getting no help. I’m not trying to say he was good on JUH, but defence is a team thing and there was rarely anyone else supporting him in 1v1s when the ball was coming in. Ryan’s role as a loose player should’ve been coming in as the third man up and supporting his teammates.

The game he played today was like any other Ryan game this season, but somehow Ryan gets away with it.

Anyway this is Heath Chapmans thread I don’t want to derail it anymore.

Cox couldn't handle him so they put Ryan on him who couldn't handle him either. The discussion was about keeping Chapman as a defender for now until we find another quality tall defender. I think we need one Wakojako doesn't think we do.. Ryan can only manage certain types and he couldn't handle greene or Juh and he seems better as a loose ish back. We have a gap that Logue use to fill.

Ryan was never on JHU. He was playing as the spare man at times. which is why he was in the tv frame at the same time. Cox was clearly on him for the vast majority of the game. At one point when JHU kicked a goal from the square you can see Cox 20 metres away looking o dejected as he had run off JHU but there was a turnover. Watch the replay. He was manning JHU for most of the game clearly.

I disagree. Ryan definitely appeared to be moved onto Juh for a part of the game. Anyway, he was no worse than Cox. We lack one quality defender imo. If Hughes can't take that role and allow Ryan to play to his strengths, then we haven't finalised our defence imo. Chapman is an option for now.

I agree Ryan spent some time on JUH. Hughes definitely spent a bit of time on him as well. Cox spent the most. Even APearce was on him a couple of times.

JUH had a cracking game. Logue or a fit and in form Chapman a better match-up.

We do tend to prefer a zone defence, so while there's nominal match-ups the zone would more often than not be the preference. The Bulldogs seemed intent on trying to disrupt the zone where they could. What they were doing with Naughton was possibly a sign of that.

We also seemed a bit caught betwixt and between at times and the confusion extended to the defenders not quite switched on at contests. There was the Bontempelli goal, where he marked nearly uncontested. Both Pearce and Cox drifted wide of the line of the incoming ball, leaving Bontempelli to mark almost uncontested. Had either watched the approaching ball more closely, either could have destroyed that marking opportunity easily.

JUH takes the ball so high he’s always going to get a few chances.

You could argue we should have switched Pearce onto him but the Dogs would probably have swapped the decoy and gone through Naughton.

Some pretty good defenders haven’t been able to stop Amiss getting his hands on the ball. Good forwards are going to get shots when the mids are on top.

Naughton was a decoy until the last quarter to seperate our defence. Take Pearce away from the play. There were occasions Pearce could have impacted the contest but instead had to go and cover Naughton who would go wide. It worked well.

Hughes has been good and played his role well, but he needs t make way when Chapman is fit and ready to go, he just has to.
Nah season is toast. Chapman needs to get his body right, build up his tank and get unleashed into the wing/midfield position.

this kid will be a star but i'm wondering if his body is up to the rigours of AFL..... maybe it'll just take him a long time like APearce.

Just wrap him in cotton wool and see him in 2024 i say.

We have 2 emerging tall defenders in the wafl who we can justifiably feel confident can become AFL standard in time. Both should debut next season and may even get an opportunity this season. We also have Worner who isn't quite a tall defender but provides options.

Once that happens one of Chapman or Young could be considered for a different role.

I am not much good at projecting forward but from what I am watching with the Peel game at the moment, Draper ain't gonna be a key back. He is the one that should go up the ground.

Interesting.

The main point remains that even if that happened our defensive 7 are pretty much in place, with some emerging depth already on the books.

Opportunities to Davies, Draper and Worner should be priorities with an eye on 2024. Worner in particular should debut.

I remember when E-Shed talked up Josh Simpson as the second coming of Stephen Hill once…🥲

Josh could footy a bit. Interesting that I compared him to Hilly (I don’t remember) as I don’t remember him like that, more like Henry or even a bit Bobby Hill.

Coleman from Brisbane is the true second coming of Stephen Hill. Maybe not as fast but the vision, kicking action & the way he weights his kicks. And just the way he moves.

I think we still need Chapman down there for now.
Wouldn't mind having a look at Worner.
