Also is a gun groundball player, can never have too many of those. Especially not these days.
I thought the same. I'm thinking will these ground ball skills + decent tank, good and creative skills and experience as an onballer = thin side wing sorted.

Twomey had Reid ranked at 6 in Sep/Oct/Nov (was even ranked at 5 in Aug). AFL.com.au bio describes him as per below:

A midfielder-forward who has speed to burn which allows him to burst away from congestion and use the ball with precision. Reads the game exceptionally well, is a prolific ball winner and creative and innovative when in congestion.

Very happy with Murphy Reid selection

Appreciate all the answers, watching the highlights and reading the reports people have posted it seems he could happily start his career on the forward line and there's at least one timeline where he never leaves it. That being the case it definitely makes sense not to reach and punt on an unproven small forward and instead take a highly rated, undersized mid who can dominate the HFF.

Port were already ahead of us and WC were a certainty to take Allan? That trade was strange.
WC were reportedly interested in Berry as well. At least that is what the West reported a few days ago. They had undergone some additional interviews etc. with Berry. Port took that decision out of their hands (ie Berry vs Allan) by giving them pick 44. It also prevented a deal being done between Freo and WC.

At the end of the day I preferred Murphy to Berry anyway. He’s all class and nice forward line nous as well.

My order of preference was Hotton, Murphy, Berry.

West Coast were reportedly settled on Hotton but Richmond jumped in early and they knew he would not last through until their pick 18.

There was no way WC would deal with us as that would have definitely cost them Bo Allan. As much as I rate Bo Allan I’m just not sure that he is a need for us.

Cooper Simpson and Murphy Reid as HHF add a touch of class that is for sure.

Very excited by what I'm hearing, give me class over athleticism anyway.

Worst comes to Worst he's great trade bait for the soon to be rebuilding dee's and pies (pickett and hill).
I’m all about this. I firmly believe you pick BAP and let the chips fall where they may. He’s clearly a highly talented player. MVP in Vic metro is no small feat.

Freo have shown they can turn promising young players (ie Meek) and homesick players (ie Schultz, Cerra, a bazillion others) into good draft picks or players that fill a need. Trust the process. If Reid comes on quickly, we trade Raz and/or Johno for what we need.

He’s got the Brodie overhead handball. The Caleb Serong bounce hand pass. Excellent quick clean hands, good decision maker with an accurate kick. Seems to snap accurately, there’s a lot to like.

Struggle to see where he can break into the 22 though. Hopefully he proves me wrong.
Plus good ball handling and ground ball.

Bit of chat about him having pace and endurance, doesn’t seem to use it in the highlights video. Seems very inside to outside player. Either first receiver in extractor. Wonder if there is some pace there that he uses when needed, but it wasn’t in the highlights video.

One of the Bio's said he lacks a bit of explosive speed but is very fleet of foot. 3 second over 20 metres doesn't sound too bad. FOS was 2.98 and Jagga Smith was 3.03.

It's a stacked draft when a player like Reid slips to Pick 17. This guy can really play. His speed reminds me of Muhammad Ali.

He's got pace. A lot of nuffies are going to (once again) look very dumb with their draft day melts

I still think forward pressure is a massive issue (not convinced Berry was the type of forward to fix it either), but you don't have to pressure if your forwards mark the ball.
If he’s replacing Walters no drama, if it’s banfield/swit then there’s a bit of development required first

Fremantle draftee Murphy Reid has declared he wants to make a name for himself after being taken by the Dockers with their first pick in the AFL Draft.

The classy Victorian midfielder, considered one of the most skilful players in this year’s crop, was selected with pick 17 on Wednesday night following a nervous wait at Marvel Stadium.

“So excited. It’s a dream come true, I’m so pumped,” Reid told The West Australian.

“I was pretty nervous waiting around for the pick. I kept hearing my mates getting their names called out but once it was my name, I can’t really explain or describe the moment.

“I’m just over the moon... really keen to get into it, start putting the work in and make a name for myself.

“I’m super grateful that such a great club like Freo has picked me.”

Reid bolted into first-round contention following a sensational season for the Sandringham Dragons and a blistering national championships campaign for Vic Metro, where he was named the side’s MVP and earned a spot in the All-Australian side.

The 18-year-old, who has drawn comparisons to Collingwood champion Scott Pendlebury, said he was excited for a “new beginning” in Western Australia and to learn off “role models” in the Dockers’ midfield including Caleb Serong, Nat Fyfe and Andrew Brayshaw.

“A pretty talented group I’ve got to try and fit my way into but it will be awesome to learn off them,” he said.

“They will be awesome role models for me, obviously a few of them have come over from Melbourne.

“On-field my decision-making and composure and my ball use, hopefully I can complement them and their awesome skills.”

Despite growing up a die-hard Richmond supporter, Reid said his family had already ditched the yellow and black for purple.

His father Marcus was visibly emotional after his son’s name was called out and already had a Dockers scarf draped around his neck.

“I’ve got such a strong support network, they’ve already said they’re ditching the Richmond colours and coming to support me,” he said.

Reid was also excited by the prospect of playing alongside former Tiger and star Fremantle recruit Shai Bolton, who was traded to the Dockers in exchange for three-first round picks.

Ironically, the pick that Fremantle received in return, alongside Bolton, was used to select Reid.

“I’ve obviously watched Shai a bit, being a Richmond supporter,” he said.

“It will be pretty cool getting to know him and playing with him, he’s obviously such a talented player.”

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir was in Melbourne to present Murphy with the club jumper.

Small forward Joe Berry, who had been heavily linked to the Dockers, and Peel Thunder premiership player Bo Allan, Western Australia’s top talent, were taken in the previous two selections by Port Adelaide and West Coast, respectively.

Fremantle Dockers’ drafting of Victorian Murphy Reid could be the perfect type of selection for the club

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir spent Monday and Tuesday in mining town Karratha, but after making the trip to Melbourne for Wednesday’s national draft, he’ll be hoping his recruiters have mined some gold in draftee Murphy Reid.
Entering the draft at pick 17 is always a lottery. That’s normally the pick which goes to the team that finishes runner-up in the grand final, but the Dockers missed the eight and then traded their early selections to get Shai Bolton from Richmond.
The Dockers would have been hoping that somebody they rated highly would still be available and they got their hands on Vic Metro’s MVP from the under-18 national championships, who was also picked in the All-Australian team and has won back-to-back premierships for Sandringham Dragons.

Reid’s under-18s coach in Victoria called him a top-five pick leading into the draft. Other experts had him ranked in the teens, but there is no doubt that the teenager has an elite under-age resume.
One of only four players to average 25 disposals and one goal per game in Victoria’s Coates League, Reid has shown a unique ability to step through congestion to give himself space. That skill has even had him compared to Collingwood superstar Scott Pendlebury.
Reid kicks goals as a midfielder too and that’s a part of the game that the Dockers have been trying to improve upon.

It always felt likely that the Dockers would be picking someone from interstate. Fremantle haven’t used their first pick in a national draft to recruit someone from inner-Melbourne since 2017. They called out Andrew Brayshaw’s name that day. Brayshaw played for Sandringham Dragons too.
They’d have been thrilled by the reaction of Reid’s family and friends. Sometimes players can show signs of disappointment when they’re recruited interstate. But the Reid’s were quick to embrace the concept of the move to Perth.
They’ll be hoping now that Murphy’s Law is one that brings them plenty of success and adds another dimension to a team that already has a strong midfield and is dreaming about leading the club to its first premiership.

The “Pendlebury-like” draft prospect with top-five talent who could slip to a pick in the teens

Sandringham Dragons prospect Murphy Reid could end up being the steal of the 2024 AFL Draft according to his Coates League coach Rob Harding.
While Reid didn’t test at the Draft Combine due to an injured ankle, he still ranks sixth in Cal Twomey’s Phantom Form Guide on AFL.com.au.

Harding agrees with Twomey’s take that he’s among the top handful of players in this draft class, but according to reports, the midfielder could slip to a selection in the mid-to-late teens once father-son and academy bids come into the equation.
The Dragons coach thinks that the on-baller would be taken inside the top five picks in most other drafts and even compared him to an all-time great for his awareness in the contest.
“Murphy Reid is an exceptional talent, and I think in most drafts he would go in the top five,” Harding said on SEN SA Breakfast.
“He’s certainly a top-five pick in my mind (this year), he’s very smooth, very calm and hits the scoreboard as a midfielder that pushes forward.
“I think he'll start his career as a high half forward and I'm always reticent to make player comparisons too much, but he does have a Pendlebury-like awareness around the contest – he’s got eyes in the back of his head.
“If he falls to that Port Adelaide pick (at number 13), and they'd be absolutely thrilled with him.”
