Welcome Welcome to Freo Murphy Reid - pick 17 of the 2024 Draft

We could have gone down the West Coast path and be chicken shits like they did in missing out on Sheezel for Chesser.
Instead we've backed ourselves in. Happy with the selection.
Curious how we missed out on Sheezel for Chesser? Wasn't that the draft we split pick 2 to grab Ginbey and Hewett?

I assume his disappointment was the fact he's a Tiger's supporter, they had 1/3 of the first 24 picks and didn't take him. I'd be devo in that scenario too.

His Dad handled it like a champ though which is good since he said his Dad is his role model.

It's not going to hurt that the club they supported won a bunch of flags and now they are rubbish, and will continue to be rubbish, overlooked their son with their literal handful of picks.

Just need Freo to do well with Reid in the team and they'll be locked in.

Yes, but also it still tells a story. We may just have the story wrong.

I don’t think it was a case of not wanting to come to Freo. More a case of disappointment he didn’t go to Richmond. Just my opinion. Once he was given more than 3 seconds to process it, he’ll be fine.

His reaction was also just a reflection of the whole group. All his mates and family clearly were hoping for a different outcome.
Yeah I mean consider you're projected to be a top 10 pick, the side you grew up supporting has four picks in the top 12 and doesn't pick you. You'd be shattered.

Alright I've cooled my jets. Here are the traits of his I like.

His kicking is good, better than above average. I'd say great accuracy just lacking a bit of penetration.

He makes/finds space in congestion which is quite rare.

He is a natural goal kicking mid which is something we lack.

He is a creative handballer which implies he also has good vision and decision making.

If he does the defensive stuff there is nothing stopping him from being a valuable long term player for us.

You’d also love Richmond because you know there’s playing time available. Lots to process within moments of being selected, but as a young mid, Freo would’ve been one of the sides you’d hope didn’t pick you - playing time more difficult early days. He even made a comment around this fact.

I’m fine with high IQ best player available types, but I do feel like our midfield is stacked.

At that point in the night I wouldn’t have been against accepting a downgrade and strengthening our 2025 hand from the best bidder. There must have been decent offers.

I was hoping for: Hotton or Berry on that order. Once they were both of the board I’d have looked to trade down.

I was hoping we were going to somehow make a trade with you to secure Bo and Reid. I thought Bo was going to get taken earlier so had my eyes set for reid. Still think reid is potentially a better pick but has the flight risk. Curious what you think would be a fair trade had west coast wanted your pick 19?

It looks like market rate was a future first

I threw up many scenarios during the trade period on how trading with Eagles could’ve unlocked better deals for both clubs. Won’t rehash now.

I was staggered you guys did the deal you did with Carlton. Felt you shot yourselves in the foot when a much more obvious and mutually better deal for both teams was staring each other in the face.

Kinda confused though reading through the posts here, his write up says he has speed to burn, he certainly doesn’t look slow in the highlights video, yet few people here keep saying he’s a “slow inside mid” or has a “questionable pace”. Am I missing something here?

Looks like a good pick to me

he'll be fine once Caleb and Andy give him the warm welcomes. Then he'll realise he walked into a dream outfit, not anything other.......
Yeah pretty much this. He'd be 100% gone going back 5 years (Cerra), but I think there is enough about the group to get him on board. O.Murphy even signed an extension and he looked like requesting a trade in his draft interview last year.

There's risk, but we can afford to take it I think.

Yeah but it doesn't suit my narrative.

The point still remains that you were spooked by Vic Metro boys Sheezel and Wardlaw, so picked local.

Same with Ben Hobbs who told recruiters he wanted to stay in Vic, so you traded down to Chesser who didn't have any red flags in his interview.

You went safe, understandable, I'm glad we went best available.

I'm not seeing blinding speed in his highlights. Very good speed yes, but not walker or Freddy level.

What I do see however is incredibly quick stepping and decision making, which is arguably more important: quick hands quick decisions, quick to hand off to great advantage, quick to put it on the boot...basically just bloody quick thinking. All these things combined add to his foot speed. There's more than one way to be quick.

He doesn't just get the ball often, he also seems to know exactly what to do with it before he gets it. He's a catalyst for great ball movement and getting the ball forward to advantage. That's Switta level smarts frankly, and exactly the kind of footballer we need forward of center. (If I was feeling particularly catty in terms of ball movement I'd call him the Anti-Hughes 🤣. No disrespect to Hughes though. He was a different style of player and I loved his game when he was playing for us, but his decision making and reading the play wasn't his strength).

He’ll be fine. All
The interviews after that initial one were positive. Still think it was a bit overthinking on what happens next, flights, packing.

And the relief of finally getting picked after being expected to go earlier

And the disappointment of the tigers not taking him.

Lot to process in a few minutes.

In the end Cerra wasn’t all bad. Got us back the pick that gave us Amiss from memory. We can all be too quick to judge on draft night. Caleb Serong anyone?

The “Pendlebury-like” draft prospect with top-five talent who could slip to a pick in the teens

Sandringham Dragons prospect Murphy Reid could end up being the steal of the 2024 AFL Draft according to his Coates League coach Rob Harding.
While Reid didn’t test at the Draft Combine due to an injured ankle, he still ranks sixth in Cal Twomey’s Phantom Form Guide on AFL.com.au.

Harding agrees with Twomey’s take that he’s among the top handful of players in this draft class, but according to reports, the midfielder could slip to a selection in the mid-to-late teens once father-son and academy bids come into the equation.
The Dragons coach thinks that the on-baller would be taken inside the top five picks in most other drafts and even compared him to an all-time great for his awareness in the contest.
“Murphy Reid is an exceptional talent, and I think in most drafts he would go in the top five,” Harding said on SEN SA Breakfast.
“He’s certainly a top-five pick in my mind (this year), he’s very smooth, very calm and hits the scoreboard as a midfielder that pushes forward.
“I think he'll start his career as a high half forward and I'm always reticent to make player comparisons too much, but he does have a Pendlebury-like awareness around the contest – he’s got eyes in the back of his head.
“If he falls to that Port Adelaide pick (at number 13), and they'd be absolutely thrilled with him.”
Pendlebury esq…

Does he basketball?

Just consider how tough this assignment will be for Murphy in the first year to crack the side. This is who he has to get past:

1. 3 stars that are set and forget in young , serong and brayshaw.

2 An ageing superstar who is a competitive beast and still believes he belongs in the middle.

3 A coaches pet who always gets a game regardless of form.

4. 2 high draft picks that are 3 years further in development and are dog hungry to get into the side. One who was just voted best afield in a WAFL grand final.

On top of all that, Jlo doesn’t usually play a tagger and if he does it wouldn’t be him.

If he can make our starting side under these conditions he’s an automatic 200 game AFL player.

He has enough traits (going by the draft profile and highlights) to get some exposure on a flank or the wing.

Fyfe and O'Meara will likely be completely out of the picture by 2027. Since Aish has been booted from the 22 I now have confidence the coaches will do the same to JoM when the time comes.

And lets not forget blokes get injured. We've been lucky on that front in the midfield lately.

This isn't like a ruck or KPD where there are 2-3 spots and no way to squeeze them in somewhere else.

His biggest risk to gametime is Chad if it happens.

I got Pendels vibes from his highlight reel, then in his post draft interview when they asked him about basketball i got half charged....

There seems to be a confusion on the player he is going to be for the first 5 years. He is competing with Banfield, Sturt, Switta, Freddy, JOM, Walters and Simpson for a spot for the foreseeable future.
