I knew a ‘pesky’ father who pushed his son way too much to coaches & scouts to the point where a line was put through his name. Kid had talent, not sure AFL level, but definitely close. Didn’t get drafted and drifted off into the local league.

My opinion, is if the kid has natural talent then the cream will always rise to the top regardless.

Amazing Billy Hartung got as far as he did considering that.

Funny you mention Billy.
I have seen many game highlights recently where he had some seriously good games.
He should still be on a list.

He would be if he could take coaching....

Yeah I get the feeling it has to be attitude based because he had the tools to be a wing at AFL level. Poor man's Scully anyway, so I'm happy to not have him.

Hartung could not even handle being in the amateurs last year. So much so I believe he was cut from the list half way through the year due to several issues non football performance related.

Says a fair bit I think.

Sad really
The kid could run all day

Well, we will see how he goes for North Adelaide.

Maybe this should be reiterated in the GW drafting record thread. Appalling research by us.

I wouldn't say so much appalling research, it's just something that didn't appear to come to the fore until he started playing AFL footy.

He had games in the U18 comps where he played team roles, was accountable and appeared very coachable.

Given the circumstances that’s happening this years national draft is likely to be compromised. What’s going to happen with the NGA players who are eligible for this years draft like Conor Downie?

Let’s hope common sense prevails and they allow Conor onto our list for nothing 😉

With list sizes probably going down, probably to 36 or so, would the club even want to put Downie on the list?
For next year? Yes! Touted as a first round pick. Captain of his club this year. Has outside speed and skill but is also able to play inside. We want him.

Would expect an older player will be pushed into retirement before passing on Downie. Sounds too good to not get ASAP.

He will definitely be on our list, even with reduced list sizes. You don't pass up on talent like that, especially when it fits a need.

If we have to cut 10+ players, inc. retirees, then I imagine some hard conversations will be had. Players like Burgoyne and Puopolo will likely retire, and even Big Boy, Henderson and Frawley may decide to retire early?

The talk is academys will close for cost cutting measures. So Downie would be our final prize.

If list sizes go down to 35, we'd need to delist 13 players (taking 2 at the draft). Yes the older boys probably get shown the door

Retired:
- Burgoyne
- Puopolo
- Frawley?
- Henderson?

Delisted:
- Glass
- Golds
- Minch
- Jeka
- Cousins
- Reeves
- Kossie
- Brooksby
- Morris
- Jones
- Moore
- Pepper
- Hartley?
- Howe?
- Morrison?

Damn that would be tough on every club and the players to go through. The AFL can't allow it.

yeh it sucks

There wont be any major list reduction with the loans secured by the AFL
The afl disbursement to clubs is about 315 million. On average that disbursement is $17.5 million per club. Clubs have about a 45-50 million minimum expenses prior to this crisis. Hawthorn considerably more than that (about 70 million). So if all 500 million went to the clubs it gets them to less than half the normal minimum expenses of the comp. of course the afl usually has over 300 million in operating expenses on its own. So that 17. Million is going to be considerably less. I wouldn’t rule out any cost cutting measure just due to the 500 million loan.

How much of those operating costs would only exist as a result of playing games (ie. match day costs) though?
