Yeh nah. This is the game people have been calling for as his next stage in development. First game of the year where he has gone over 50% contested possession and he had 7 clearances which is around double his average. He played an inside-mid role today and had a nice balance of outside use with over 400m gained. The key is, when he is winning contested ball, Hawthorn are more than likely winning field position and the game. So he should keep this up!So I don't think anyone would think any different if a couple of posters wanted to hit delete on a ridiculous thought bubble this week...
What a, contested inclusive, player we have.
He did as you suggested!I argued he is well capable of winning contested ball but his role has been to be just outside the coalesce rather than right in it. Today he was asked to do more on account of the state of the match and conditions. And he delivered, as I expected him too.
These are the kind of players you need in modern footy. If you have someone who can grab the ball from a pack, run fifteen meters then thump a 50m kick it disrupts all the defensive zones, makes more one in one opportunities for the forwards, etc.The Newk is so obsessed with always moving the ball forward towards goal. Love it. If he ever gets a tatt it should be “metres gained” across his chest. Good luck to his future neighbors when ever going halves in replacing a fence!
He is 42th in the league for score involvements and 65th in the league for total clearances. He is 40th in the league for centre clearances and 80th in the league for stoppage clearances. Staying slightly outside the coal face slows the rate at which he wins clearances but it allows him the opportunity to get a high quality exit (usually long and direct). He also wins proportionately more centre clearances than stoppage clearances, which would assist his conversion rate given from the centre it is one kick inside fifty to even numbers. A good chance we score from those entries as he is getting them deep inside fifty.
33rd for score involvements(up 9), 45th for clearances(up 20), 31 for centre clearances(up 9), 62 for stoppage clearances (up 18)Most clearances on Sunday so I assume he has jumped up that list a fair bit.
Kingy probably has a bet on him for rising star.David King has now announced he is a big fan ....Im now worried for Duke
Need to get Kingy added to the end of year selection panel.“That guy shapes games”: Huge praise for Hawks Rising Star prospect
“So his impact is evident and it’s there for everyone to see.”www.sen.com.au
Hard to believe how good he is already. He's everything you'd want in a top 10 pick and we snagged him in the bargain bin of the mid-season draft.“That guy shapes games”: Huge praise for Hawks Rising Star prospect

Agree. Then throw in talent like Ward, MacDonald, Butler, and a Sheezel or Hewett type, and we're pretty much there.Hard to believe how good he is already. He's everything you'd want in a top 10 pick and we snagged him in the bargain bin of the mid-season draft.
He's the only damaging midfielder we have in a midfield otherwise full of low-impact players. King's description is correct: he shapes games. He and CJ are the guys we have who do that, though Lewis is emerging there also.
If he stays at this level or has modest development from here he will be a very good long-term player. I was confident that's what we had on our hands at the end of last season but his improvement this year has been amazing. If he continues his rapid rate of improvement and develops a proper 4 quarter tank, he can be an absolute star of the competition who carries our midfield. Potential captain of the club.

An in-form Worpel and Day/Newcombe/Ward/McDonald with 50 games each and we'll be a completely different team.Jai improving so much this year has made me realise that even though our midfield is still probably the worst in the comp, we may not be too far off from having quite an exciting midfield, those names there + maybe Day in a couple years or Worpel if he finds form. Just need to get this draft right.
We're still thin in the middle. A team needs a number of midfield stars to challenge. Worpel's regression has hurt. Ward and MacDonald look good prospects but we are going to need some numbers and some high impact players in there. Probably a couple good drafts yet, unless we can genuinely transition some of our half backs in there with an impact. Day has been given some opportunity in the midfield this year, but without much impact yet. I'm still keen to get CJ some opportunity up field. There doesn't seem to be much interest in giving Scrimshaw a shot yet either, but he's worth a go.Agree. Then throw in talent like Ward, MacDonald, Butler, and a Sheezel or Hewett type, and we're pretty much there.
I reckon Kane Cornes must have one on Daicos. Just saw a clip from Footy Classified where he was talking him up as "doing things many 10 gamers can't". The highlights included going 3rd man up to spoil and being credited for putting his body on the line because Darcy Moore got the spoil anyway, and hitting up an unmanned teammate in the middle of the ground with a standard over the top 30m kick that even Billy Hartung could have done. There is nothing surer than a certain media commentator having a large bet on jai for the rising star
And he automatically looks up the ground for the long handball or the big swinging arm to knock the ball forward. Metres gained towards goal is in his DNA. I wonder if it’s Mitch telling him to do this or if it’s Jai’s natural way and Mitch is encouraging and telling him to play to his strengths. These are the kind of players you need in modern footy. If you have someone who can grab the ball from a pack, run fifteen meters then thump a 50m kick it disrupts all the defensive zones, makes more one in one opportunities for the forwards, etc.
It's simple but it works (it won three premierships for the Tiges).
All I want to see from Duke now is more goals. If he adds that to his arsenal he will go to the next level where Martin, Petracca, etc live.
I am confident Finn will make it.An in-form Worpel and Day/Newcombe/Ward/McDonald with 50 games each and we'll be a completely different team.
Gun.
We need a Sheezel AND Hewett type.Agree. Then throw in talent like Ward, MacDonald, Butler, and a Sheezel or Hewett type, and we're pretty much there.
We need a Sheezel AND Hewett type.
I would love to see us persevere with Day as well.
Nash will make it.
Jai needs more than one or two in support, we need a multi pronged midfield with plenty of options.
