Midfield is big enough for more than one inside mid, it's like saying Mitchell was in the way of Lewis, or Ablett Jr. got in all of Selwoods spots. Although Shiels is probably more the level I'm hoping Worpel gets to, his tackling has dropped with his confidence levels but some of Worpels defensive efforts are still pretty notable compared to our other midfielders, when he sets his mind to it.

We know Worpel can't play in other positions.
But he can play as an inside, ball-hunting midfielder.
We saw Worpel play well off a hff forward flank rotating into the middle at the end of last year. Heā€™s limited in other positions but he can play them.

One of his big problems for mine is how slow he starts each year. It takes him a while before he hits top form. Even 2019 he had a great game first up but it took until late in the year for him to play his best.

Really needs to hit the ground running next year.

A lot of our senior players are notoriously slow out of the blocks unfortunately.

I'm thinking Wingard, JOM, Impey, Bruest, etc.

It's why we have our now traditional late season flourish of wins once we are well and truely out if finals contention.

Does my head in, really can't understand how that works in professional sports.

It comes from pre season continuity, Wingard often gets injured, Jaeger battles his body often, Impey has had a fair few injuries and Breust is consistent but he strings from everyone else, if the rest of the team is struggling the small forward will too.

Tom had nothing to do with worpels issues. It's a fallacy that has caught on here. Worpels issues are totally attributed to worpel and no one else.

I don't know how many times I've said this over the last two years, it would at least be double figures by now.

It's ridiculous that the narrative still won't just die.

The Club will keep Worpel (agree no one else ready to commit to him). Try and get him back to 2019 form.

Concentrate on trying to get an offer for TOM. Lesser extent JOM. That is what I am hearing. We will see.

If A club offered good picks for Mitchell and JOM would we take them or only one.

So Worps did not have a great year this year.
he was down on form, in and out of the Ones, came back, played pretty well for a couple of games and was then injured and benched for the year.

With Titch reported to be going, that may help Worps play more of a role that suits him better.

If he can get back to his best, he will almost be like a new recruit next year and could help us significantly.

What do you expect of him in 2023?

To prove to all those that were desperate for Tanner Bruhn why he was never going to be a starting mid for us.

Too many have given up on Worps. I'm expecting a massive 2023 playing as an inside mid.

Mitchell did not spend much time playing inside mid. How does him leaving create space for Worp to play that role?

It was evident that both at stoppages wasn't working.
With Titch potentially going, that issue may no longer exist and it may help Worps.

If Tom Mitchell doesnā€™t suit our game style then itā€™s hard to see worpel working either. And Mitchell is a far better player. The thing that may get him games in 2023 is just how bad we are at clearances and contested ball + moving on most of our experience midfield depth.
Worpel moves with the ball in hand and takes meterage.

I think with a full pre-season, a more youth-focussed side, and having the coach as a big fan of his will see him turn it around next year - heā€™s got weapons through his core strength and ability to break through and get the ball out.
Surely he has to be better next year? I do hope though that he sees what Duke is doing and thereā€™s a bit of a challenge thrown down by Sam to Worps to lift his game and be the No. 1 mid.

Newcombe, Ward, McDonald, Moore and Maginness are the reasons Worpel didnā€™t stay in the side. Not Mitchell (or Oā€™Meara).

Mitchellā€™s potential departure doesnā€™t ā€œopen a door for Worpelā€. Only Worpel can open that door as those guys listed above have shown plenty, and will be the ones he competes with for spots in the side.

No one kept Worpel out of the side but himself. Worpel plays his best footy and these guys arenā€™t kicking him out the team.

If he gets fit and drops some weight (especially in the upper body) I believe he will be set. He showed flashes of good form. Especially just before he did his shoulder. But just wasnā€™t fit enough to maintain it.

Heā€™s a hard worker. Personally I think he needs to get back to playing on instinct and enjoying footy again. He looks like he is overthinking it too much.

Think this will be key.

He was actually looking really good in some of the match sim I saw over the summer with his clearance work and bulldozing his way out of stoppages, so I just hope he can find that again this preseason even being a few kegs lighter, and take it into the 2023 home and away.
