Had his poorest pre-season since his first year at the club. Club was very disappointed and it clearly affected and ruined his season.
Really?
Any further info or context to this?

This is very unfortunate for Mitch and us. He's shown great play when healthy and has run a string of games together, but he's either cursed or fragile, unfortunately. The forward line anchor is a big need in our side and big opportunity for one of our younger players to rise to the occasion.

It appears that the injury faeries will nag Mitch forever.

Went through and decided to analyse some recent ACL injuries as examples for Lewis, and all factors involved for return to sport.

Initially, how much damage is done to the knee, in this case, Lewis had done most of his acl, others have done all. On from this it includes the graft at surgery time, quality of the graft and the surgeon.

The position of the player is taken into consideration for a return to sport and the type of athlete they are, explosive, long distance, high flying etc.

The graft taken from other parts of the body are also affected by previous injuries, especially the knee, but other areas like the quads or hamstrings. Which leads to a more complex surgery and rehabilitation process.

The other side is mentally, if an athlete lacks confidence on return and being rushed back, or even not ready mentally despite the physical readiness. They’re more likely to re-injure themselves because their body will move differently and will put more stress on their own body. This isn’t always the case and is athlete and person dependant.

The pressure internally and externally to return sooner than the player is ready is also a big factor in re-injuring.

For Lewis, no one knows how strong his mental capacity is, and assumptions can be made based off of previous injuries and it’ll all be different in differing stages, he could be 8 months in and feel awesome and not far off or he could feel a mile off. It’s a 12 month average rule on return, sometimes more, sometimes less.

The examples of less can be Nick Murray and Dan McStay at 10 and 8 months, whereas others have returned sooner and done their knee multiple times again (Patton, Menzel etc). Some take the extra precaution like Sicily did as his was closer to 18 months on return to play.

Wish him nothing but the best, he seems to have a good view on it from his post on Instagram.

*graft ;)

McStay is scheduled to play VFL footy this week after doing his ACL in late November last year. That’s around 8 months. 8 months from now is Round 1, hopefully Mitch doesn’t miss much footy next year
It's a disgrace that Collingwood are letting McStay return this soon imo. Should be 11 months from surgery to full competition at the absolute shortest, the risk of re-rupturing that ligament is way too high otherwise

I'm sure that Collingwood are listening to experts and McStay is part of the process.

It ain't the surgeon who's responsible for that turn around.

Just in case you’re booing Duncan & sticking pins in him with a voodoo doll … it was Atkins.
You are right but it doesn't matter as it is a Geelong player. They all have pins stuck in their voodoo dolls

Mitch Lewis (knee) - Season

"He's been in nearly every day we've been here as a group. He's up and about, he's supporting his teammates, he's been super positive. He's booked in now for surgery next week. We'll get that done and start the journey of a rehab process. Mitch is ready to attack it, he's really positive and he's been fantastic around his teammates this week in particular. It's just great when he's around the club, he's a real presence for us and he's really good."

If Mitch’s knee reco is on the same knee that has been troubling him, then it may be a blessing in disguise.

A opportunity to finally get his knee right. The minor rebuilds just did not seem to ever stand up.

Hoped he can get his knee fully right and 20 plus games a year moving forward in 2026.

the partial tear / sprain sounded to me like a ticking time bomb. I'm no expert but feels like it was inevitable so its probably not the worst timing - get it done, back late in the year next year for a taste when we are hopefully heading into a finals campaign. Full preseason next year leading into a 60 goal season and leading role in our 2026 premiership team.
