The next stage in his development will be how to combat a defender that has his agility but is taller (everyone is) and stronger. He was outbustled in a game this year against one of the interstate teams. I can’t remember the team or the player, but I remember he did a great job of getting himself between Watto and the ball.

Literally every defender in the league is taller, and probably all of them are stronger too.

Some may be as agile as Watson is, though Watson is lightning quick with decision making and with disposing of the ball, that he will always have half a step on his opponents.

Honestly, as someone who was a bit tepid on his size when we drafted him, I had the opposite experience watching him. I often found that he outcompeted bigger and stronger guys much more than I expected him to. Didn't look overawed or outmuscled at all.

He's quite nuggety and seems to be quite strong all through his core. Having such a low centre of gravity relative to the rest of the comp would make him deceptively difficult to move despite the size disparity.

As Cryptor said low centre of gravity gives him an advantage. He's also naturally very strong, one of the 'mini-hercules' types, probably got a big testosterone blast early in puberty. All packaged up with great swag of skills, a quick footy brain, work ethic and heart. Kermit, those big guys don't stand a chance!

For the next 12 years, supporters of 18 other clubs are going to hate him as much as we will love him.

He is a nightmare to match up on.

Yep, I said it when he was drafted. He's like a billionaires version of Hayden Ballantyne who was a very good player. But Watson does everything he does a lot better. It's like turning all Ballantyne's attribute rankings from a 7 out of 10 to a 25 out of 10

Still shocked how many people pulled for Curtin in that draft tbh... the talent level of Watson, just another level

Something else I noticed from those highlights is that he seems to be a natural full forward (in a rovers body).

He really times his leads very well and jumps and hit the ball at top speed.

We cleared the entire 50 for him Pagan's paddock style against Port.

That's a hell of a show of confidence from the boss in a cut throat final.

A couple of nights before we called his name out at the draft I was talking to a member of another clubs list management team, and they told me that Watson has the best de-acceleration that anyone has ever seen(or tested) come through the draft.
He can go from top speed to stopping and baulking a player like no one else.

I remember him telling me “you guys will take him, and he’ll be a star”.

People can use any argument they want, but at least 90% of them are heightist and that was the only reason.

Watson was by far the most naturally gifted pure footballer in that draft.
