I'm a little concerned about the thought process on this board.
Just because a player plays a certain position in underage football doesn't mean he will be playing the same position at AFL level.
Correct.

Great ball user and looked effortless switching left/right from the Minimal what i've seen. Not going to pretend im following AFL/Draft massively nowdays but still watched a few highlights and while highlights could make me look like Lance Franklin on the footy field, some of the things which i caught was looked comfortable using either side and seems to read the ball very well.

He may not be a ready to deploy round 1 prospect but he has a LOT of the tools which ticks our boxes, Defensively savvy, composed on both sides of the body and has a lot of potential athleticly.

Will spend a season in VFL as he's not AFL size/ready yet

Looking at his numbers he looks quick as anybody and athletic.

I don't see this as a replacement for Smith or Stratton... I look at this guy, and think that Hawthorn are thinking Whitfield.

Who for the record is a whopping 81kg.... but also deadly accurate, clean skills on both sides, with vision and attack. I'm liking this pick.

That's a nice comparison.

I must admit, I was holding my head in my hands when we passed up Kemp and took Day but I refrained from posting until I had mulled it over for a little longer. After watching those SANFL highlights I am actually quite excited, he has some exceptional traits that could definitely see him progress to be a midfielder/winger. His ability at ground level is elite and his hands are very strong for someone of his size. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up growing to 190cm+. Vision in traffic and foot skills are sublime, he is clean, fast and silky.

The more I watch his highlights, the more I keep comparing him to Scott Pendlebury. It might seem crazy but I just watched their highlights back to back and they have some very similar traits, here's hoping that once he puts on some weight he can turn out half as good.

All the names in this draft, don’t mean squat till we’ve seen them play a couple of years at the highest level.

Day has ambidextrous kicking skills, pace, height and vision. Will start to break the tackles he’s trying to in these highlights with the core strength we’ll give him.

He’ll fill out a bit too. Then we’ll see how he stacks up against the more mature bodies taken around him.

Kicking looks very good in highlights, would be handy to see the ones he didn’t make. But DE very good too.

Some people in here need to get a grip, you don't need to agree with the pick but some of the comments in here are just rubbish (most are brilliant). Calling him a bust before he has even hit the track for a training session... Some people just want to be miserable.

Look forward to seeing him develop because he has the tools.

I am happy that we have drafted a natural footballer, very different to the Hartung type selections. Footballing ability > athletes.

Really like Day. I think his skinny frame is a little overstated, looking at the footage he looks wiry and strong, not skinny and weak. Love that I couldn't really tell what foot he kicks with, seems calm and composed, intercept marks with ease. Looks hard at it and seems to make good decisions. Just looks like a good player with scope to play HB, wing to my eye. Could release Scrimshaw into the midfield, or end up one himself. Like it.

Dont think to much about it, a lot of people were keen on Kemp so naturally will be disappointed we didn’t go down that path.. Everyone will want to see the kid dominate, and it won’t take long for people to jump on board but for the moment some posters need to expect some challenges/questions as to this selection.

On face value in its most simplest terms we’ve selected a player in a position we really don’t need, complicating the motive around the selection is we have Downie as an academy choice next year who is also a top 10 prospect that plays half back. From a personal POV I thought there was a chance to fill a more relevant need, but meh whatever, the choice is made and I’ll support the club.

I’ve got to say I’ll be shattered if Kemp goes on to be a star with the blues.

I always worry when a man child is chosen, it is easy to dominate when you have far greater physical development. Will Day is playing the game and is not much more than a boy physically, but he has good skills anticipation and courge. At 18 he is likely to still grow several cm and will get stronger. Unless he packs on the Kgs on the next 6 months I doubt we will see him play firsts, a year at Box Hill learning our game and he will be ready to go 2021.
I see another strong marking player, Clarko is hatching a plan to defeat the current trend.

The Whitfield comparison is a beauty. Lachie did have all of the elite traits so i'm not suggest we have found a bloke to match him, but watching those highlights you cannot help but think that young Will is a cross between him and our beloved Grant Birchall.

Also not taking credit for this, but somebody mentioned that by the time Impey is fully recovered and Poppy possibly retired or moved on, you could pay Jarman as the pressure forward and let Day, Scrimshaw and Frost handle the rebounding duties.

Was a little surprised last night when took him at 13, but the more diving is done the more it seems to be a very astute pick. Devastated he wasn't there in person to see him in the colours already!

ps. I'm pretty sure another skinny kid by the name of Marcus Bontempelli grew over 10cm in his last 2 draft seasons and went from boy body to man physique in one off season following his first year. He was the 'upside' talent from that super draft in 2013. Day could easily be ours.

Day also seems very good overhead, in comparison Kemp's highlights show him repeatedly trying to mark on the chest. In the end there was growing doubt over Kemp's ability to play in midfield add the knee issue and it's not surprising he was overlooked.

Luke McPharlin looked like a narrow beanpole when he arrived at Hawthorn. He was all legs and arms.

Day is exciting for his upside.

(His highlights remind me of Burton)

Whist we don't really need another HBF, it's his aerial ability and lovely kicking action that look extremely promising.

I believe we may be looking to develop him into a midfielder in the future.

He has been picked as a future running, neat mid. Team, we need another two Will Days. He was just “not a sexy pick”.
My contact says there were another two clubs, Port being one who were “super keen”.

I think people online get sucked in by the ‘plays like’ comparisons. Every tall midfielder gets likened to Bont. They don’t get likened to say Ellis Yolman or Daniel Howe, which are far more likely to be accurate. If professional recruiters who watched these kids closely thought Kemp was the next Bont, he’d go pick 1. They clearly don’t.

People want the sexy midfield superstars but you need very good players. Ash and Young are half back flankers who went earlier than Day and sound like very good safe picks.

Hawthorn obviously thought Day is a better chance of becoming a very good player than the more talked up midfielders we overlooked.

I had heard we were keen on Robertson for his character in the same way we were with Worpel. Doubt we would trade back in now though

He needs to be a wingman, a rangy and damaging left footed wingman... Izzy replacement hopefully, we have zero need for HBF’s

Looks like one to me. And how many LEFT FOOTERS look that natural, that good on their right, and just turn that way without thought because the play opens naturally to that point.
Never thinks about it, one of the most natural two sided I've seen since Mitch.
I think the kid will be a jet.

of course we need Will Day types. We need run and more run. All of our run is “old”, Smith Hendo and getting there.....Scully. It may not be your “instant fix” pick but it is List Management very smart.
Let’s see what else falls from the pack tonight.
We just got Finn cheaper than we thought....going to be interesting.

Loving his highlights. Hadn’t seen or heard much about him prior to the draft. He’s clean and assured.

What he lacks in muscle he makes up for in smarts and courage.

Yep, totally get the thought process behind the Day selection when you dig a bit deeper, he is a good runner and is an excellent kick, has a similar body to Izzy so if the club is ear marking him as a replacement for Izzy then I think I will be more comfortable with the choice and the rationale behind it makes a bit more sense. From everything I have read he has really only been a defensive stopper who can intercept and set up from the back half, hence my thought process we have really only selected a mid size defender who can use the footy well ala Scrim/Sic and to a lesser extent Hardwick and Stratts (minus the kicking).

Was there any thought on Pickett if he was available? I was coming around to the idea of selecting him if it wasn't Kemp.

Interested to see what we do tonight, still a lot of talent left on the board and with a compromised draft next year and a top 10 talent already locked away it's a perfect time to sell and move up the draft order.
