The interesting thing about Kemp was that we weren't the only ones who overlooked him. Gold Coast, Port and Geelong all overlooked him.

Also interesting that it has been stated that Port, Geelong, Gold Coast and Richmond were circling to pick up Day. That's 5 recruiting departments that rated the kid.
.

Well done Hawks.

Sounds like Good Will Hunting.

I’d love that too

I was down on Gould when he was spoken about as a an early first, but early-mid second he's good value. Putting a premium on good ball use is the only effective way to counter the run-and-gun style of footy.

Gould could very well slip to the late 30s, if that happens then he could very well be a steal as you are almost assured he'll play a substantial amount of AFL footy.

He has been picked as a future running, neat mid. Team, we need another two Will Days. He was just “not a sexy pick”.
My contact says there were another two clubs, Port being one who were “super keen”.

Abasi mentioned that Port were set to pounce with the next pick.

TBH my initial apprehension has been soothed by watching his very smooth kicking action and his aerial ability, stuff like that is just natural and is very hard to develop. From the highlights he looks like a good decision maker and good with his timing (attacking the ball on the ground and in the air).

Even if he's not going to develop into a midfielder I guess the positive of drafting a skillful HBF is that we may be looking to turn Scrimshaw into one instead.

I'm astounded by all the negative commentary - give the lad a chance!

Having seen him play LIVE, the kid has a number of outstanding traits
- incredibly courageous
- good foot skills
- backs his judgement
- takes the game on
- can play on talls / smalls
- versatility
- "footy smarts"

Outside of Luke Jackson, he also has the most scope for physical development in relation to the draftees taken before him.

The last time we took a kid with similar physical attributes he copped the same feedback - he would spend 3 years at Box Hill before he would get a game. That kid ended up plating a handful of games in his first year when SEVERELY under developed however became a 3 time time premiership player - anyone remember a kid called Bradley Hill?
And for the record, this kid looks like a body builder compared to a kid called Gunston when he got drafted.........okay, that may be a stretch but you get the message!

There has to be some nerves around his ability to put on weight, always felt it held back players like Ellis and Thurgood (to varying degrees) in saying that, his skinny frame (if he does put on weight) can also be seen as a positive. He has learned to play football without having to rely on his body/strength to get him through. He obviously has a very high football IQ, reads the ball well, attacks it ferociously and uses it incredibly well. I'm excited.

Seems to have a lot of the natural attributes you cant teach, so if he can add the physical ones you can gain through training/etc we could have a gem.

I'm not a fan of upside in kids generally but looks like we've taken a bit of a risk/reward option but we've got a squad that can contend in the next couple of years imo and we get Finn too so we afford to think long term and take a bit of a risk.
