Short players are always unfairly discriminated against, it is a shame because no doubt there are many that miss out that could be league players. I trust in Wrights selection and look forward to watching Lovell next year, he seems like he is ready for senior footy. Some glaring weaknesses he will need to work on - 1. He needs to become duel sided, currently he is heavily right sided - 2. Foot skills are wayward - 3. Defensive pressure needs to improve if he wants to be a senior footballer at Hawthorn
Agree with the need to improve his left side, his right side though looked very nice, picked some tough targets and seemed to be hitting them. Can't comment on his defensive pressure though, hard to tell from highlights packages. I think you'll find with the interchange cap getting smaller the focus on footballers with elite endurance will increase. I really like the look of this kid.

I can only think this spells the end of Woody. You couldn't possibly play two short people in the guts and one is enough to be drawing Selwood-esque frees.

So the future:

Inside
- Lewis
- Langford
- Lovell

Inside/Outside
- Shiels
- JOR
- Howe

Outside
- Smith
- Hill
- Hartung

Lewis looks out of place here, will be 30 next year. So perhaps woody comes in for him, fingers crossed.

A good, considered write up this one

22 – Hawthorn – Kieran Lovell

Don’t get me wrong – I rate Lovell, but I was surprised he was taken this early. Lovell is the full package under 180cms, and won a TSL best and fairest despite only playing 13 games for Kingston, so what does that tell you? Graeme Wright is a big-time talent spotter, who has moved up alongside Wells and Hine as the leagues best drafters of talent. This kid could come in next year, hold his spot all year, and play in a flag. Hello Sam Mitchell 2.0.

Yet again, the word "elite endurance" pops up with another one of our draft recruits ;)

Looking at his clips, he looks solid. Pretty amazing stats.

Wrighty even said he has a chance of featuring next year. Would be great to see him accelerate that quickly into the team.

I think the endurance factor helped him get selected as Clarko is already thinking ahead of the pack and concentrating on the further restricted interchange numbers coming in from next year.

The fact he's got that stocky build ala Mitchell probably helped his case, that and he's still a pretty swift mover and huge accumulator of the pill probably had Wrighty trying to hold back and not select him with our first pick.

Are Burton's midfield aspirations unlikely? I think I remember Gunner saying something similar when he came over. Whilst Gunner's aspirations have been thusfar unmet Gunner is certainly more than a one position player.

Gunston has played on the wing and floated through the centre. I think I recall him lining up at the odd centre bounce too. 'Midfielder' tends to be associated with playing on the ball. He's more of a utility moving where ever he can be dangerous (where the ball will be rather than just following where it is). Just happens that most of the time it is in the forward line.

I was interested in the deft side step he displays in the highlights package.
You need look no further than Robert Harvey and Sam Mitchell to see the value of that skill.

The ability to avoid tackles and create space is highly underrated and yet a key element of longevity.
This kid look like he can stop on a dime coupled with a very effective change of direction

It could prove a real weapon if he's able to transfer the skill set from junior to senior company.

Burton might allow Gunner to do it more often too

Am not sure I suppose it depends on how well he Hunts the ball. He could certainly do the Gunston type stints on the wing you'd think.

I'm hoping in Burton we've got Fyfe with Jarman's disposal by foot, but who knows.

His skills generally are very good. IS agile enough to play midfield (assuming full recovery). Its just a matter of whether or not he can play inside the contest or not. At worst he could play on the wing but I would back him in to make it as an inside mid. Very talented.
