Seamus Mitchell (34 disposals, 14 marks, 11 intercept possessions, five score involvements)

“We saw Seamus come back and we wanted to make sure he was really positive with how he played the game. We know Seamus can defend the ground really, really well, but we wanted to see him get back to being an offensive threat with his dash and run and carry, and I thought he was really solid in that. Now it's about him just building continuity and continuing to build confidence. Again, when an opportunity arises, we want to ensure that he's ready to step back through the door and perform at AFL level.”

Interestingly in his draft year rookie me central had this about him:

STRENGTHS:

Speed
Athleticism
Footy smarts
Kick penetration
Creativity
Upside

IMPROVEMENTS:

Cleanliness at ground level
Defensive pressure
Midfield development

‐----‐--------------------------

It's obvious to see that he has definitely turned defensive pressure into a strength

Mitchell is a serious talent who will only get better w maturity, experience & opportunity. Hopefully, we'll then see more of the offensive side of his game and a pretty special skillset.

Yes I agree. I think we are yet to fully appeciate what he offers. He has a high cruising speed and as he fills out, I'd expect will be given more responsibility.

I think he is No2 in the slalom stakes behind Weddle in how easily he glides out of defence.

He has time, he needs to keep doing this in the VFL and then carry it across into the seniors. He'll have enough chances as Breust retiring and Hardwick becoming more of a forward will set the stage.

He's a very talented player but he fell into the trap of his offensive efforts completely drying up over his last handful of games in the seniors. It's something he and Finn both need to figure out to break back into the side and stay there.

Thought Seamus was a bit of a non entity in his last two games in the seniors. Don't think it will be easy to get back in unless coaches think that it was just a blip but I suspect he isn't too high up in the pecking order with other players performing so well. Josh Ward is also knocking on the door but both players, when given the opportunity, need to make themselves much more visible both offensively and defensively. Don't think floating in and out of a game and doing one or two nice things is going to cut it. I'll use Connor McDonald as their benchmark. He is now running much harder, competing much harder defensively and reaping the rewards.

The numbers that Ward, Morrison, Finn and Husthwaithe are pumping out at Box Hill are very impressive.

That's an absolutely monster stat line form young Seamus relative to what he was producing in the seniors the previous couple of weeks.

I wonder if the reason they can't replicate similar stats at AFL level is due to the step up in class from VFL to AFL or are they too focussed on the defensive side of their games when they get called to the seniors?

I'm guessing a little of both. Seamus and Finn especially need to find that balance between being defensively minded without sacrificing their offensive output (CJ is having a similar issue at the moment).

Unlike others, I see S. Mitchell as an essential part of our future success.
He's got the talent and the attributes to make a big difference to our team winning premierships.
We're a much better team when he's running with the ball and ripping through the opposition's forward press.
I’m not one of the others. Seamus is my football husband

Definitely agree, spot on

I don't see it.
He's a slow burn.

To me he looks rushed with the footy at times.

Plays a lock down role well, but this year has struggled to win the footy at all.

Don't think Sam is keen to have lock down smalls providing no offence. That's my read on it.
I agree that his offensive game has been off this year, but we saw last year that he does have one and it's pretty good. Needs to get his confidence up.

He may get squeezed out occassionally due to team balance or requirements week to week, but he is in our best 25. Hardwick's move forward is reason enough to think the coaches trust and think highly of him. It is what makes teams strong when you have high calibre players missing on selection.

Bolded is the case. This is the case for any elevation in the level, locally, Coates league, VFL and AFL. Takes time, some are an exception and transfer well and quickly.

I think one of the areas that I want to see our team develop is seeing elite speed and line breaking through the back half / middle.

Weddle and Impey offer some, but Seamus & CJ have that high-level speed trait.

If we can get both of them utilising this in an attacking manner, this would be incredibly valuable for the team. Must work out how to unlock.

So what happened to this guy?
his breakout season last year was great.
Really took responsibility and ran hard with the ball, defended quite well too.
He ripped through the opposition with his run and beautiful kicking.

This season he had 4,4,6,6 disposals in 4 games as a starter.
The only games he had under double digits last season was when he came on as a sub.

LAST SEASON:
5x games with +20 disposals.
Never under 10 disposals.

Seems his disposal numbers have plummeted and so has his game.
WTF happened?

his run and dash role is no longer there and he’s only been brought in for lockdown roles. Weddle, CJ, Impey and Amon are all ahead of him for the role he played last season

Pretty sure he copped an injury earlier in the season (maybe a concussion??) then missed multiple games and when he came back he hasn't been the same. Just hasn't clicked for him this year in the seniors but every time he goes back to BH he does well.
