Toast Welcome to Hawthorn Tom Phillips

Very, very happy with this trade 👍. A hard running winger who can fins the footy and kick goals for a third round pick, absolute steal.

These are the kind of trades we made in the three peat years (think bringing in Gibbo, Hale, etc).

Low cost trades that immediately make the team better whilst still maintaining the high draft picks.

More of this in the coming years please!

Now we just gotta get the core we had in those 3 peat years.

Great runner, but can’t kick and no genuine speed (for an outside mid). Fits our midfield perfectly.
What he can do though is routinely rack up 25 possessions a game which is something our current midfield struggles with at times (Tommy Mitchell and Worps excluded).

It has been a real weakness in our team the last three years when Shiels, JOM, etc could regularly rack up low teen possessions over multiple games.

That's gotta come from the draft.

But without those incredibly solid role players such as Goo, Gibbo, Hale (very unfair to call them role players but you get my drift) we wouldn't have won those GFs even with Buddy, Rough, Mitch, Cyril, Hodge etc.

Especially the wings. Scully was struggling to get to double figures most weeks this season.

Good cheap pick up. Gives us a winger for the next number of years. Replaces Smith for now. Probably also puts Scully on limited time. Hopefully we have day, Downie or someone else come on over the next year or two, putting Phillips in the Scully role.

It’s where I see him playing good footy. Using his running powers forward of the ball and not too much 1v1 stuff.

I doubt him getting 25+ possessions often with us. We don’t play the high possession game style Collingwood does. We are a fairly low possession team at the best of times (excluding Mitchell, who takes possessions from others).

What he will do is consistently provide an option upfield for our midfielders much like Scully. Just have to hit him.

Great inside and a very well researched clip, from a couple of very keen blues supporters on Tom Phillips over his last few years, and were realy keen on Tom to end up at the Blues.

Having lost Smith and Henderson, Scully turning 30, Downie having not played in two years, options were drying up. At the moment he’s a B grader with the capacity to be an A grader. Tom Phillips walks straight into the best 22.

C: Shiels, Mitchell, Phillips
R: McEvoy, O’Meara, Worpel

I think he has a much more rounded game in terms of winning contested footy relative to Sculley though.

Basically Sculley has one trick and that is to run further to act as a link player but I think Phillips can also win his fair ahair of contested footy for a winger (at least more than a Sculley anyway).

I am pretty bullish he will still average mid 20 possessions next year playing so many games at the MCG.

He has some limitations as a player but so did Impey, Hendo, Worpel, Frost etc.

Clarko is brilliant at getting the best out of players and Phillips has got some good strengths to his bow. We have two of the very best endurance athletes in the league. Going to be working a lot of teams over next year.

I keep seeing David Arquette and it makes me wanna scream!
GW gets it done and with an upgraded pick. TP should be about to come into his prime years as a player and what better place to do it than with Mighty Fighting Hawks
Welcome
