Fremantle got no compensation for losing 8 players to expansion to West Coast. I actually think you should get compensation if you lose players but it didn’t happen before.
You got first pick in the WA pool, which ended up being Roxy Roux.

You also got pick 21 as a compo pick, which ended up being Mim Strom.

Just looked it up and you are correct about pick 21 being a compensation pick. Brisbane, GWS and WB also got compensation picks as they also lost a lot of players.
The Roxy Roux pick was not a compensation pick, it was their actual pick based on their finishing position.
West Coast actually had another first round pick but traded it to Brisbane for McKenzie Dowrick.

Ordinarily the new teams would get the first few picks in the draft, before the existing teams. Our first pick (which we traded away) was after yours, because of the haul of free agents we signed.

Imagine if we lost Ward and Gauci (Port), Collier (Sydney), Bullas (Essendon) and Bowen (Essendon or Hawthorn) all to expansion clubs, for no compensation.

We’d just about be starting our list build again. But with no concessions.

My understanding is that Adelaide and GWS would likely have a higher number of players they lose to expansion sides before compo gets granted.

In the past Freo and Brisbane had a “limit” of 8 while sides from other states had 4, I expect similar numbers this time.

If so the above would trigger compo, but only for the 5th player, West Coast want the weakest 4 to sign first so the 5th and subsequent players gain the maximum value for the club.

It is a ridiculous system because it fails to differentiate between clubs with better lists who can afford to lose more players than a developing club.

It is possible that clubs that struggled this year get further draft assistance, but the focus this year will be on getting competitive expansion sides on the park before allocating priority picks over the next 2-3 years.

Maybe in Victoria where the depth is there.

Nothing stopping the AFL from giving west Coast the first 4 picks ahead of Freo when the depth in WA is shallow and Freo have been at the pointy end of the AFLW since inception

Alternatively 3 picks after the first round that we need to trade - they may have more value getting WA talent home

That would be the way I would go, but I don’t run the AFLW comp.

As much as it pains me to say it, you absolutely need compensation.

And some way to help bring experienced players into the club as well, bulk rookie isn't going to help straight away, especially if the get disillusioned after a season or two and leave anyway.

Almost treat you as a new expansion side and let you operate under the same rules this year. Plus draft concessions.
Say picks WC-WC-FRE-WC-WC-WC-FRE for the next two years.

Saw Aisling Mccarthy down at Scarborough Beach this morning. She told me she is not going home to Ireland this off season she is staying in Perth until the next season starts.

I asked her if Grace and Niamh Kelly will be back for next season and she said she is not sure,as the Gaelic season clashes with the Aflw season starting earlier. She said its a very tough decision for them to make,as Gaelic has always been the top priority for them.

Can't afford to lose too many more troops,we will lose every game by 20 goals the way things are going

Yes this is quite the issue for the Irish contingent across the AFLW. Be interesting to see what comes off.

You are tight, we cannot afford to lose those two at this stage.

The 18s WA side will take on the Tigers in a trial game over a Revo Sunday 9am for anyone one interested.

C19 cancelled last weeks trial game v Swans

The squad of 23 (I believe from one of 18s girls' mouths to me) will then be selected to fly in and play SA on the 10th

Fly in the 9th, play Sunday 10th, fly home that night.

Saturday 16th, the 18s play a WAFLW "All Star Side" venue TBC

Thursday 21st Fly to Melbourne for a big game v Vic Metro on 22nd

Names to watch

  1. Ella Roberts - Obviously
  2. Lauren Wakfer - Very mobile ruck, clean with her hands
  3. Tara Stribley - Quick on the outside
  4. Jamie Henry - Rock in defence at WAFLW level, good overhead mark
  5. Georgie Cleaver - Solid unit, strong at the contest
  6. Emily Elkington - Silky as fk. Smaller mid, glides on the grass
  7. Mikayla Western - Very quick - can butcher the footy
  8. Abigail Bushby - Runs all day, decent kick
I'm sure a few others will pop up however a shout out to Liliana Grassenis. 17 in December 2022 and 176cms.

If she can get over both Covid and her ankle she is another one to watch at theses state games. A wonderful overheard mark, she's intercepts at will and will give you 3-4 repeat efforts to try clear the ball away

Having known this girl for 4 yrs and had the privilege of coaching her for 2 yrs at junior level this kid is white line fever personified. I can see her making it to next level - although her footskills are average and will need time to refine

Western was the top up player for us in the Melbourne debacle. She seemed up to it, had a couple of good moments.

Would have been next in line after Tuks and Morrison (with Sharp and Duffy unavailable), looks to have the same skill set as her brother. Raw, has pace to burn.

Fair enough. Is Western bigger or at least not afraid of contact?
Taller but from sample size Id say Bowen is definitley tougher sat the contest - not saying MW isnt a tough footy player either.

More importantly Biggie how is her footy IQ and her decision making ?
