The West running this

Fremantle’s AFL Women’s coach hunt is down to two including one who didn’t apply.

Six contenders were interviewed for the position last week, with four already told they haven’t got it.

The West Australian understands several players will consider leaving the Dockers if former assistant Lisa Webb does not take the role after the club sensationally sacked Trent Cooper late last year.

Webb, who was an assistant at the Dockers for five years, is believed to have been approached by the club about the role and is yet to decide if she will take it.

She currently serves as the midfield coach of the Western Bulldogs, having followed her husband Marc to Victoria after he got the same job for the men’s team.

Webb is hesitant to take the role because it will mean splitting her family again, having done it for eight months when Marc was appointed at the Bulldogs.

The other applicant is believed to be a prominent female football figure in Western Australia.

Applications closed earlier this month for the Dockers’ AFLW head coach role, vacated by Cooper who led the club to four finals campaigns in five seasons before an injury-ravaged 2022 campaign.

The job advertisement was posted in mid-December on Seek, more than a month after they parted ways with Cooper.

Claremont WAFLW premiership coach Jack Schwarze, East Fremantle flag-winning mentor turned Dockers AFLW assistant Matt Templeton and Subiaco WAFLW coach Michael Farmer were among the half-dozen interviewees but were unsuccessful.

Schwarze led the Tigers to a drought-breaking WAFLW flag last season, while Templeton coached the Sharks to an undefeated season the year before and a losing grand final in 2022.

A Fremantle spokeperson told The West Australian they were hoping to announce the successful applicant “within the next month”, but wouldn’t specify how many people and who are in the mix.

“The interview process is continuing and we’re hoping to finalise the process within the next month,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Melbourne star Karen Paxman could still land at the Dockers.

It is understood Paxman is understood to be close to Dockers AFLW player development manager Claire Heffernan, who came to Fremantle with head of football operations and performance Bob Murphy.

It is not known if the instability around the coaching situation will affect five-time All-Australian Paxman’s decision.

Fremantle is poised to be led by a female AFLW coach for the first time since 2018 as the two remaining candidates undergo their final interviews this week.
As revealed by CODE sports, former player and assistant Lisa Webb remains in contention. It is understood Webb, who was targeted by Fremantle to take part in their process, is set to be interviewed one final time by the club’s selection panel in the next two days.

Should she claim the job, Webb would become the second former AFLW player to graduate to the role of senior coach, following in the footsteps of Port Adelaide’s Lauren Arnell.

CODE Sports also understands that revered WA football figure Martene Pearman has been linked to the role. Pearman is already well known at the Dockers, serving as an assistant coach during the first two AFLW seasons.

The former Coastal Titans coach also mentored several current Fremantle players on their journey to the AFLW, including midfield star Kiara Bowers. Pearman was an assistant coach at Melbourne during a series of AFLW exhibition games and she has led WA state open teams and also been crowned the Subiaco District Coach of the Year.

More recently, Pearman has worked in Subiaco’s men’s program under WAFL premiership coach Jarrad Schofield and his equally successful successor Beau Wardman.

Pearman is just the second female coach to serve in the state league. It is expected the successful applicant will be revealed in the coming days and follow in the footsteps of inaugural Dockers coach Michelle Cowan, who was the first female WAFL coach.

Fremantle had hoped to appoint a female successor to sacked coach Trent Cooper as the playing group attempt to bounce back from a three-win season.

Seems very much a make it up as you go decision which is very unlike the AFL

I’m sure they’ve thought through all the ramifications

The above may or may not be sarcasm’s

The problem is that they changed the season timing at the same time as doing a four team expansion. Which then means that they've had to postpone the draft, at precisely the time when they need new talent flowing into the expansion teams. So they've attempted to manufacture new talent for the four new clubs by another method.

The Zipster. Will almost certainly be our top pick in a couple of years (assuming she doesn't get poached by the East). Couple of differences I have with the article -- a) the reason people don't believe that she's 160cm is because there's no way she is, that measurement has to be 18 months old at least. b) no way she ends up a forward, she's a midfielder. Lots of Monique Conti similarities besides just the way she plays -- star basketballer, starts her AFLW career in the forward line, then goes on to dominate the midfield. That's my guess, anyway.

I like your comparison to Conti - a lot to like with Zippy's skill set

Besides, having lost out with Roxy Roux, we cannot let the Purples get all the great names.

And our most likely top pick in the next proper draft, Georgie Cleaver. Despite these guys only having her second best (behind Srhoj, it can only be) I can't imagine the Eagles passing on the chance to take a genuine contested marking tall forward.
