For a team that is heavily criticised for their away record (at least in Melbourne), why do they play well at the Adelaide Oval more often than not?

West Coast's results at the Adelaide Oval
  • Round 19 2014 = Adelaide 105-136 West Coast
  • Round 6 2015 = Port Adelaide 68-78 West Coast
  • Round 22 2015 = Adelaide 126-69 West Coast
  • Round 9 2016 = Port Adelaide 86-94 West Coast
  • Round 23 2016 = Adelaide 71-100 West Coast
  • Round 7 2017 = Port Adelaide 87-97 West Coast
  • Elimination Final 2017 = Port Adelaide 60-60 West Coast (won in extra time 78-76)

Simple. Similar dimensions to Domain Stadium. Allows them to maximize their gameplan to full effect.
Look at their record at MCG, on a wider ground, it's a different story.

Narrower dimensions I guess, closer to subi so our structures usually work well there. Our record at Spotless isn't too bad either and I think that ground is similar.

Its funny because we have a terrible record at Simonds down in Geelong and that ground is probably the closest to Subi in terms of length x width proportions.

All mental with our group which makes tonights win all the more surprising and satisfying.

AO pretty similar dimensions to Subi

AO-167x124
Subi-175x122

Only think that I can think of.

Didn't realise the dimensions were similar. That could explain to an extent.

Also, Adam Simpson has coached the Eagles throughout that whole period, so maybe he has a game plan that suits the Adelaide Oval?
Swap him for Don Pyke pls

The good record in Adelaide (particularly against the Crows) goes even further back to the 2000s during the Judd/Cousins era. I wouldn't be surprised if it were some psychological thing since West Coast are used to playing in front of a heavily biased one sided crowd.

eagles are not too bad at the mcg. have done well against carlton and melbourne recently. beat richmond in 15 and lost narrowly this year. played many tight games against collingwood. it is really only hawthorn with their tiki taka (precision kicking) and spread that they struggle with.

Really odd record...especially as we were similarly placed to Adelaide on the ladder in 14' and 16' and dispatched them by 5 odd goals, yet got belted in 2015 when we were en route to finishing 2nd on the ladder and playing off in the GF (well, arriving at the MCG on the day anyway).

Meanwhile, four wins in three years against Port, all by 10 points or less......while getting beat by 5 goals in the reverse game back at Subiaco this year.

I think dimensions are obviously a factor. AAMI/Football Park was also a long narrow ground. It's interesting how narrow the Adelaide Oval is for a cricket ground, come to think. We also have a decent record at Etihad, which is a bit more round but still narrower than the MCG. Our record at the Gabba has also been good, even during the peak of the Lions. It's the MCG, SCG and Simonds which seems to trouble us the most.

A good thing we don't have to play Essendon at the G during the home and away season anymore either. They were always tough for us there.

We hate the g - couldnt beat collingwood there when we were first and they were last.

The stupidity of not making the new perth stadium the same size and the g irritates my penif

Whilst not Adelaide Oval, even our previous two finals were the thriller 2007 QF loss against Port and the 2006 PF win against Adelaide (come from behind). Dimensions suit us, and we obviously don't lack confidence there. Port historically were a bogey team for us, but we seem to have got over that. As a minor factor, like the Gabba, the weather also tends to be more similar to WA.
