Interesting, but the article the other day said that Smith wasn't as progressed as Higgins or Williams. I don't know a heap about recovery so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if he's back running now, wouldn't he be on track to play round 1?

You can run after a acl but it won't be match ready for a while now.

Even more so, Derrick Rose - Did ACL in 2011/2012 playoffs, didn't play a single game in 2012/2013 season. (Sure you know that though, being a Bulls fan - was there anything else going on there?) That was kind of weird though...

On topic, Clay is one of my favourites, really hope he makes a faster than anticipated recovery. Brings an aggression to our team that I personally think is really valuable to the side.

it was a mental battle for rose
he didn't felt like his body could handle it even when the docs said he could play
if you aren't mentally in the game, you will do more damage to yourself since you might hesitate and do a acl again.

THE WORST GAME IDEA in HISTORY has been given the arse before it got off the ground. Thank F.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-10-31/rep-game-gets-chop

A PUSH to play a pre-season All-Star representative game that was backed by the AFL Players Association and considered by the AFL looks set to fail with AFL deputy CEO Gillon McLachlan saying the idea has not gained industry support. The players had expressed a desire to play representative football and the AFL considered including an All-Star game in the revamped pre-season format, but many clubs had vehemently opposed the idea.On Thursday McLachlan admitted such a game was unlikely in 2014."We won't do anything unless we have everyone on board, and that's looking increasingly unlikely. That's just the reality of it," McLachlan said.

Brett Goodes to be Elevated to Senior List
Great Work!!

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-11-01/summary-of-player-movements
WESTERN BULLDOGS
Additions
Brett Goodes, Promoted Rookie
Stewart Crameri, Traded from Essendon
Sam Darley, Traded from Greater Western Sydney

Deletions
Daniel Cross, Delisted
Nick Lower, Delisted
Lukas Markovic, Delisted
Patrick Veszpremi, Delisted
Dylan Addison, Delisted

So that leaves three new draft picks if we choose to use them all: picks 4, 42 and 60 with Goodes at #96.

For those wondering where the extra pick comes from, we only had 39 on our senior list in 2013.

Your next mission Agent 86 is to find out the health of the anointed one... the man of many ankles... yes.... The Prud!!
Surely Prud can just lay hands on himself (that didn't come out so well  ) - and he will be miraculously healed.. :p

WESTERN BULLDOGS
Shaun Higgins (foot) Had surgery on the navicular bone in his left foot in April, and will be carefully monitored when the club returns for pre-season training. The Bulldogs anticipate that he will do most of the training, but they will approach his recovery with caution.

Christian Howard (hip) The young Bulldog has had surgery on the hip that dogged him throughout 2013, and won't be able to train fully with the team. His progress will be monitored.

Clay Smith (knee) Has made great strides since injuring his anterior cruciate ligament in July, but won't be fit to resume full training just yet.

Tom Williams (shoulder) He's been unlucky with injuries throughout his career, but has bounced back from his shoulder reconstruction and will be fit to do 100 per cent of pre-season training.

It's good to see that;

- Tom, clay, Shaun and Christian are working towards recovery
- we aren't seeing our club in the media spotlight for the wrong reasons. Would be good to see us stay under the radar and build at a steady rate.

I feel for the players when the clubs refuse to allow rep games. In all other major codes, playing for your state or country is what they aspire to. It's the highest honour that's denied AFL players.
Look at rugby league's state of origin. Players are stood down from club duty the week before then go and belt the crap out of each other on Wednesday night. Of course there's the odd injury but the clubs just have to wear it, and no-one whinges.
In fact they're the three biggest rating nights in NSW and Qld. How is the code not a winner?
We've allowed the clubs to call the shots because of the chance that one of their players might get injured.
I call it selfish and short sighted, with no regard for taking the game to a new level or allowing the players to get the recognition they deserve.

I think the problem is All stars v Vic is kind of dumb. I wouldn't feel any pride for the All stars, nor would I support them. Rugby is a fairly unique sport in the fact that they basically have only 2 states that contribute to the nations player stock in any major way. AFL players have shown that they don't really care about the honour side of things when the main players refuse to play in the international rules series. In fact the general failure of that series is evidence that there's just not the market in AFL fans for representative games. If you can't get people behind Australia, then you're gonna struggle to get anyone supporting meaningless team A v meaningless team B.

It works in very few sports. It works in the NBA, but look at that. Teams are virtually meaningless there, players move from club to club near annually. A lot of support of that sport is about the "show". I'd suggest AFL is a much more grass roots. The majority of the joy a fan gets is by seeing his team filled with recognisable players run out for a club with a history. It's much more about the club than anything else. Perhaps an overly simplistic argument, but I hope you at least understand the gist of what I am getting at.

I was a big fan of S.O.O games, but they were pre multi million $ player contracts. Even if the AFL manages to garner the "100% support" they insist on, the reality is the clubs hold the whip hand with the players. The last few sad attempts at something akin to a S.O.O match failed miserably (an All Stars team...come on !!) and many of the star players had sudden one week ailments withdrawing from the squad. A typical comment along the lines of ".... he pulled up a bit sore, so we thought he needed a week off..." thwarted any chance of the clashes being truly a state representation of the best the AFL have.

I also don't buy the lame "The competition is now national so State of Origin is no longer necessary..." bs as an excuse not to get it happening. NO team is represented by players solely from their home state, so the claim an Adelaide Vs Melbourne is as good a replacement, only several of them on a weekly basis, is ludicrous.

But as much as I'd love to see S.O.O re-emerge, sadly, I can't blame clubs protecting their players from the risk. Sydney just committed 10 million bucks to Buddy. How would that hurt if Buddy broke a leg in the game and missed 1 -2 years ? Sad, but a reality in the modern day money driven AFL.

I think this is where the Indigenous All-Stars should play the best of the rest - maybe the Barbarians. Not sure of the start of the season is the right time but I am not sure we give the Indigenous community the respect they have earned - playing another team in a preseason game just doesn't have anything riding on it or will build a tradition - you also get too many no shows.

I understand the indigenous round - this is fantastic but does let the guys play as a community.

If it was a game like this - the players respect for the indigenous guys would make them play and play hard.

For the Indigenous players this would be the best of the best an Honour to play and hold a Jumper.

Like the US I would also like to see the selection process like the NBA where an expert panel gets a certain weigh and the public vote gets equal weight (the standardize to ensure big clubs don't get a bias) - this makes it a genuine community game.

Bonus points towards All-Australian could also add weight.

The indigenous all-stars would be annihilated.

Yeah, I've read that. I've also read the examples given on the website in the guide.
A segregated AFL match would appear to be a long way from the requirements stated. Having said that, a good lawyer can do a lot with such loose interpretations, and no doubt approval could be gained even if it only had the most tenuous of justifications.
Who or what is being served here? I'd like to think that the ALS would (and should) come down on the idea like a ton of bricks. I think it's a contemptible concept.

Folks

lets keep the discussion focused on the "bulldogs offseason" in this thread. The decision over the indigenous team and the why's around it - discussion of potential racism, interpretation etc dont favour too well over internet forums.
