Western Bulldogs want in on possible future Good Friday AFL game

C7 says we're "now at long odds to play Good Friday football." AFL is apparently very keen to make a big club part of it.
Geez that's crap! Honestly the money it raises should go to the hospital! It's all about exposure which cheating shit clubs like Essendon don't need! The AFL shouldn't be making it a money raising exercise for the clubs moreso something that shows the brands of the clubs playing!

Sometimes it's not about profit, sometimes it's about making yourself responsible to the community and integrating yourself within that community. It's clear if a big club plays in this match the AFL is doing the opposite.

Brayshaw with a not-so-subtle jab at us:

This man suggests he's all for equality but his motives are a long way from working towards having a fair competition all round.

He certainly had the full force of the Channel 9's news pushing his clubs agenda on their evening news. It was wall to wall Norf. Norfs tantrum about their 30 years struggle for a Good Friday Match. Norf players visiting sick kids at the RCH. And last but not least, Norf's revolutionary GPS tracking of their players in what amounted to little more than a glorified press release for whatever company produces said devices.

Does James Brashaw have an affiliation with 9 that I'm unaware of?

They've bumped it up to 30 years now, have they?
Let's see how many decades they can add to the tally before someone calls Brayshaw out as a fraud and a liar.

30 years is what I recall. But I never let the truth get in the way of an internet forum post.

1992 was the first year, quoting Norf as of about a week ago. Rounding 22 up to 30, how Norf-like.

1) its about money
2) roos vs dogs wont fill the stadium, nor attract the eyeballs on tele that dons or pies would.

the AFL will spin some shit, but thats what will be behind it.

Interesting to see Conehead working for our cause instead of against it, for once.

I find it just as interesting that his picture is placed over a graphic titled "expert." I guess "Conehead' wouldn't have fit in the natty little banner, no matter how apt.

Like the use of the word 'elite'. Its a title, that is used way to loosely these days.

A few favours being called in? The oligarchs resting uneasily?

I agree but I quote Tas from a couple of pages back because it gets right to the heart of the matter:
The current policy to give preferential FTA exposure, premier timeslot access and the like artificially inflates the supporter base of the clubs who get the preferential treatment. We can't ask our sponsors for $5m each because we don't have the exposure, there is no compensation for that. When a kid turns on the TV and is first exposed to footy and he sees Collingwood, Essendon and Carlton non-stop then they are going to lean towards the teams that are on TV, our clubs only get better access when we approach the premiership window.

The priority should be to build North, Dogs and Saints to a sustainable 50k membership base in Victoria, when any club can fill out Docklands when they play an interstate team and when any two Victorian teams fill out the MCG then every week will be a blockbuster, too much revolves around 3 clubs and they are complicit in terms of dragging the competition down by having it lopsided.
However it's probably too much for the AFL and TV stations - and especially the self-serving big 3 clubs - to buy into this sort of a long term vision.

Just rotate the damn thing, 1 big club, 1 small club. Norf can have first year against Carlton. We can have 2016 when we should be starting our prime. Dogs v dons.

The short sightedness really gets to me. If you played any two Victoria sides consistently on Good Friday it would become a success. The media is entirely underestimating how many people are bored to tears on Good Friday. Melbourne is a morgue on Good Friday. We need to bitch and moan for all we are worth as this game will inevitably become huge.

As far as I'm concerned there are only a few teams who should have access to this game - Stkilda, North, Dogs, and maybe Carlton.

We are never going to out-muscle the superpower clubs, but why not give us the chance to improve??? Essendon and Collingwood were always going to be big clubs, but their brands and memberships are so much bigger because of anzac day. HAwks and Geelong have easter Monday. Melb and Coll have Queens B'day.

Perhaps schedule 2 regular games on Good Friday - Dogs v Saints and North v Carlton. The Saints are one of our main rivals so it makes sense. Both clubs have been on the outer in terms of scheduling for years so I believe both lots of members would more than embrace it. If we don't get in on this it will set our club back another 10-20 years in my opinion.

I've been listening to the talkback on this issue and it's really plain to see that the commentators, as well as the general football public have absolutely no idea what it's like to be a member of one of the smaller teams. If they took 5 minutes to examine our fixture this is what they'd see:

1. No Friday night games - not one! Or even a Thursday night.
2. We only play one of the big Victorian clubs twice (Essendon)
3. 9 of 23 games in a late Sunday slot (3.20 , 4.40, or 7.40) + round 23 will most probably be scheduled there too.
4. Only 3 night games (7.40 start) for the year!

Brayshaw's, we thought of it first, is more than a little pythonesque. After all, everyone knows that the very first Good Friday, 2014 years ago, was a dog of a day. In fact, it took another 1770 Good Fridays before a single Christian was to even see a kangaroo. So who is the johnny come lately now?

To show respect and in keeping with the somber mood of the day, the Blues would be an appropriate contender. Similarly, the saints resonate a religious tone.

There are karmic and spiritual forces at work here. The great fall from grace which has befallen the once powerful and arrogant Carlton Blues following comments by their then President John Elliot referring to the Bulldogs as that club with the tragic history. By any measure the history of the Blues since those comments were uttered has been clearly the poorest in the competition.

We also need to commemorate St Kilda's imperial dominance of the wooden spoon.

Thus, I propose Good Friday be known as the Tragic Cup to be played in rotation between the Dogs, the Blues and the Saints.

If we are again as a club forsaken and once again crucified by malevolent forces practicing their witchcraft, casting their numerological curses at us, then the days of turning the other cheek must end. For as the once great Bush said, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice more fool me.

And so, as it is written in the great book of AFL revelations, I quote, " in the last days before the tribulation, a great club shall rise from the pit of contempt and all those that rebuked her, reviled her and refused her shall quake in fear. For she shall win not one or two consecutive cups but nine. And the great whore known as the Media will beg that she play every game on a Friday night. But the great club of kennels shall say no! "When I was poor and thirsty you denied me and so now that I am full and sated you can lick my boots""

I can see it being either Carlton v Essendon or Norf v Carlton, and we get wiped again. It's a pity PG can't bring in some of his legal mates to challenge this legally, the way we are being thrown to the wolves is negligible and quite vindicaive. Hell even the Saints have a regular game now in NZ, Melbourne get's Queen's Birthday, we are the only club that doesn't have a marquee game, if you consider the interstate clubs all have blockbusters when they play against each other.

I don't mind North Melbourne hosting the Good Friday game given they have been pushing this concept for 2 decades. But what I don't want to see is Collingwood or Essendon given another marquee game. It won't be Carlton unless they decide to give up their Thurs night season opener against Richmond.

Some good points here, although i doubt they will have 2 games, but i agree that if we are not included in some way it will set us back considerably. Our fixture from a promotional point of view is a disaster, even St Kilda fairs much better, and as far as the media is concerned we don't exist.I was pissed off before the season began when both the Sun and the Age printed the grudge matches of 2014. because of the Crameri deal i would have thought that the Footscray Essendon game would have been included, but not a word.I did note however that Caroline Wilson wrote a headline article on the fact that Richmond and Carlton only play each other once - my god.
Its all very well to bitch and moan amongst ourselves, we need to get our dissatisfaction out into the public arena ,by going on to talkback radio, emails to newspapers etc .We all want the Good Friday fixture then along with our president we have to fight for it ,if we don't make a noise they will continue to walk all over us.

Sometimes I'm driving around in the morning with SEN on and I think Andy Mahr(?) gives us a fair go. I don't listen to or watch anything that has EM on it. Talk about over exposure. It's the Kevin Rudd effect. I stopped listening a long long time ago but it's hard to avoid *the inevitable dial-a-quote in the written media.
*Edit: Oh yes and Fox Footy. Just can't get away from the p***k
