I didn’t know enough about Peter Moore but seeing as he may hand the cup to his son! Moore was captain and played in 4 losing grand finals but managed to win every other award within the club and 2 Brownlow medals as well, but I’m sure he was dissatisfied with not getting the one medal he wanted. If Collingwood can win and he can pass that on to his son and know the importance of it and the joy it must bring him is amazing! I am vary rare to warm to Collingwood but this is too good to be looked past because of my stubborn unnecessary despise of the side.

Well said , actually threw his last runner up premiership medallion away , not a good look , granted , but with his passion and football pedigree to get the best out of himself , understandable., an amazing athlete and gifted football talent, to see him play , was like watching poetry unfold. Ride like the wind .

Was that one of the factors in them getting rid of giving runner up medallions on the ground?

The bloke was a superstar.

People on here talk about Dean Cox changing how rucks play. Peter Moore was doing it 20+ years earlier.

Peter Moore
Debuts at 17. Tall, extremely fast, skinny & a bit ungainly. But worth a shot with huge upside.
By 20 he is a regular, not ready for first ruck, so play forward. By now a brilliant high mark. Kicks 76, including 4 in a Semi, 4 in GF & 5 in GF replay.
At 21 kicks 57, but plays more ruck
At 22 is first ruck, dominates and wins Brownlow.
First ruck in GF’s at ages 22, 23, 24.
Continues to be a first rate ruck, wins another Brownlow at 27.
Retires at 30.
Great, great player.

Did I read on here a few months back about Ray Shaw's opinion of Peter Moore? Wasn't good. Injury cloud going into one GF, probably should have sat himself out but didn't.

Will admit that this story needs confirmation.

He has been implicated in the politics behind Tommy H getting booted.

I can't remember him reaching his normal great heights in those GF losses, though Pie fans who watched him more closely may know better.

Other than that, he was a freak athlete, play front back middle, very highly skilled compared to most ruckman, excellent contested mark, loved a bit of a run. Unique skill set at that time.

Yes , the VFL at the time after recognising that players should be able to exit the arena with some decency and dignity intact following a GF loss and not be subject to further limelight. Sounds a bit precious to me , but hey , as Bob sang “ The times they are a changin “

It's a tragedy both Bucks and McRae have tied Moore down at FB. Would've been a repeat of his Dad, roaming around the ground as a quick midfield/ruck combo dominating play.

I thought he played because he didn't have much choice. Tommy said a half fit Moore would still be better than any replacement, so he put the onus on Moore to play. Barham was injured too, but don't think they could have sat it out even if they wanted to. Pies didn't have the depth.

Can anyone provide some enlightenment on Moore’s move to the Demons?

Not happy at Collingwood?
Big money offer (for the time)?
Transfer fee (they were a thing back then, right?)?
Player swap?

You need to remember too that Collingwood still had Len Thompson until 1978. He leaves, Moore goes into the ruck and wins the Brownlow.

Looking at some stats, it seems Collingwood had Bob Heard who was there with Thompson, probably playing 2nd ruck to Len. He left after 1975 for Richmond.

He and Templeton from Footscray both moved the same season. Templeton had a lot of injuries and really bulked up his upper body while doing his rehabs, he was probably too big in the end and never got anywhere near the heights he did for a few seasons at the Dogs.

100% as I understand it. it wasn't a very old tradition.

When Moore went to Melbourne the Collingwood banner read "No Moore Filth". Back then the cheersquad had a degree of autonomy.

The talk when he left was that he didn't like being verbally abused, but Hafey was already gone when Moore crossed to Melbourne. perhaps the new coach also used harsh language?

Very classy racehorse type footballer, huge leap. Tony Shaw knocked him alittle in "A Shaw Thing", a funny little sportsmans "auto" biography. "He used to just belt it" was the knock on him as a ruck. Maybe there was bad blood? The Shaws could be bitter enemies, but they were both excellent captains Ray and Tony.

Collingwood didn't take the run of GF defeats well, several captains were let go in the 70's and 80's: Moore, Choco Williams (just for talking to another club, being polite and meeting them to say "no") I think Thommo was sacked but maybe that wasn;t when he was captain.

Peter Moore was captain and played in 4 losing grand finals ... I’m sure he was dissatisfied with not getting the one medal he wanted.
For a couple of years, the VFL gave out silver medals to all the players of the losing Grand Final team. But they stopped doing so after Peter Moore received his medal in 1981 and he promptly threw it 50 metres into the crowd in disgust.

You can't blame him for being pissed off and disappointed. Collingwood's losses to Carlton in the low-scoring, wet-weather 1979 and 1981 Grand Finals were both heartbreakers. The Pies came so close under Tom Hafey.

1977 Grand Final... NM d. Coll... Drawn Grand Final: 3/4 time: Coll 9.12, NM 4.15
1978 Prelim Final... NM d. Coll... lost by 12 points
1979 Grand Final... Carl d. Coll... lost by 5 points (after leading 5 goals to nil midway thru Q2)
1980 Grand Final... Rich d. Coll... lost by 81 points (record margin) - they were first team to get to GF from 5th place
1981 Grand Final... Carl d. Coll... lost by 20 points (Q3, 29 mins: Coll 10.10, Carl 6.13)

Not to be pedantic, but the sign actually said "Moore Filth" :p

It wasn't a sign held up by cheer squad member behind the goals. It was huge sign that one of them draped over the second level of the Southern Stand before the game. It stayed there until quarter time when Peter Moore asked one of the MCG staff to take it down.

Collingwood fans had a funny double standard about 'traitors'

Their 1981 team had the following players which the Pies had poached from other clubs

Graeme Allan.......... 87 games for Fitzroy
Warwick Irwin........ 213 games for Fitzroy
Kevin Morris.......... 110 games for Richmond
Allan Edwards.......... 66 games for Richmond
Ross Brewer............121 games for Melbourne
Craig Davis............. 52 games for Carlton/North
Ray Byrne............... 81 games for Carlton
Russel Ohlsen.......... 47 games for Carlton
Mark Taylor............ 200 games for Norwood
Mark Williams......... 150 games for West/Port Adelaide
Kevin Worthington... 102 games for Claremont
Stan Magro............ 105 games for South Fremantle
John Annear............. 60 games for Claremont

In 1982, they bought the '77 Brownlow Medalist, Graeme Teasdale from the Swans

Collingwood pretty much bought any player they wanted to fill their recruiting needs.
But geez, didn't they get salty when the player transfer went the other way for once. :D
