Toast What are some of the greatest calls made in history?

A standout for mine is Alex Rance getting involved in list management decisions and warning Richmond not to 'upset the apple cart' when they were signing Tom Lynch.

Also Ron Barassi declaring he needed to leave MFC and the shadow of Norm Smith to test himself as a coach at Carlton.

4 years later he was a premiership coach.
At halftime of the 1970 GF the Carlton coach famously tells his players to “handball handball handball .”

Ron Barrassi does it again! No wonder he’s generally considered the greatest living figure in the game.

Coaching reviews at Geelong and Richmond respectively deciding to stick with their current coaches (Bomber and Hardwick)

Jeremy Cameron trade. Would have looked like a disaster if we didn't win a flag with our aging list. West coast and the Kelly trade can show how things can go wrong

Chris Scott was clowned on when he said Geelong could win the flag before the 2022 season began.

To keep on the weekly topic- Hardwick on M Pickett was ballsy and great.
They won by like 100 points.

I don't think not playing him would have made a difference

Paul Roos telling Jason Taylor to pick Clayton Oliver in the draft. Nice one Roosy. Woulda been Darcy Parish otherwise.

Paul Roos picking Simon Goodwin as our next coach. Thanks again legend!!

Not football... but this is probably the best call I've ever heard.

Rodney Hogg whilst playing district cricket for Waverley-Dandenong in 1989 played against a young blonde-haired leg spinner. The kid dominated, and Hogg kept him in the memory bank. When that kid got selected for Victoria a year later Hogg wrote an article for The Truth saying "Shane Warne will take 500 Test wickets". He got sacked for writing such an outrageous article. Hahaha

And put Hopkins on. Roll the dice and demand results..and cross your fingers 😊

Roos is the Mark Twain of footy.

The voice of common sense.

To be fair Kelly has been there best player this year and probably there second best player last year.
Which is sort of the point - the trade is called a disaster even though it is not. Imagine the scrutiny Geelong would be under if they bombed out in finals last year than started this year the way they have

I would say some of Collingwood's salary dumps belong in this thread if they win a flag
It’s looking like a master stroke already.

That one they sent to north , Daisy and the various other talent they turfed out.

Great work by the Carringbush

Offering Jai Newcombe a long term rookie contract off the back of half a season of VFL footy already looks like fantastic list management and talent identification.

One journalist said Hawthorn 'blinked' on the night of the MSD in 2021 by taking him at pick 2 and not waiting until the second round selection.

There are a million great draft calls that could be listed in here.

Tom Stewart was one already mentioned.
Selecting Marlion Pickett to debut in a Grand Final and watching him subsequently pill Norm Smith votes is up there as a great selection call.

What did Richmond give for Lynch?
While Richmond did not need to trade for Lynch, a seven year contract at $1 million a year for a player that was injury prone and had only one 60 goal season to his name at that point in time was risky. But in the end a really good call, Richmond don’t win the comp in both 2019 and 2020 without him in my view.

You can see what his absence has meant to the team right now.
Arguably the sole reason why Richmond go on to win a couple more flags.

Took 9 marks, kicked 3 goals and another semi final was hanging in the balance had he kicked straight in last years final.
