A standout for mine is Alex Rance getting involved in list management decisions and warning Richmond not to 'upset the apple cart' when they were signing Tom Lynch.
Yes was following roughly the same logic that said Adelaide would be a better team without Dangerfield.

Clayton Oliver eating macdonalds chicken nuggets before playing a vfl game for richmond tigers was a solid call. Was considered very unprofessional at the time, maybe if he’d had a carrot stick carlton would have picked him at number one istead of J Weitering and he’d be stuck there instead of being a premiership legend at Melbourne Demons.

Too many to choose from

Malthpuse saying preseason he can't say how he could see Blues dropping a game for the year.

They got the spoon.

The greatest call is a matter of perspective.
As senior coach what's he meant to say pre-season?

"Yeah we're shit, forget this season."

FWIW this is just as I perceived it.

Hawthorn trading Trent Croad.

It’s not because they received a 4x flag (3 as captain) player and 2x NSM in exchange for him. Also people forget it was Trent Croad and Luke McPharlin (who IIRC wanted to go home) that was part of the deal. People mention Sam Mitchell was used on the last pick from those traded selections but that’s a little tricky because they selected Elstone (?) before him who was a bust.

What I’m applauding them for is not so much for the outcome but for the philosophy behind it (BTW IIRC Croad was almost traded to Essendon instead of Freo and I have NFI what the Hawks would’ve received from the Bombers). I like that they made a very brave call in trading away a player they took at #3 four years earlier and was a fan favourite because it’s more important to be bold. They knew he wasn’t going to become a superstar and other clubs totally overrated him as far as they were concerned. They backed their judgement and it potentially could have backfired big time but they still did it because they knew Croad wasn’t going to get much better and had serious footballing limitations and traded him at his absolute peak value before the football world would begin to reach the same conclusions Hawthorn already had.

Also FWIW this is as I perceived it.

Another list management decision I like is Carlton at the end of 2000.

They couldn’t come to terms with Aaron Hamill. IIRC he was being offered about $350k a season to stay and wanted $450k -$500k and the Saints and Swans were prepared to pay him that. The Blues just wouldn’t budge and so he left for Moorabin.

While St Kilda might have appreciated Hamill’s work ethic, leadership and hardness IMO the undeniable reality was that he just wasn’t an elite player but he was getting paid like one. He seldom delivered performances that were even close to the level that someone on that salary should have been producing. Carlton’s reluctance to pay Hamill’s quote was thoroughly validated by his lacklustre St Kilda output.

However the other high-profile St KFC recruit during that same offseason, Fraser Gehrig, gave tremendous value for money.

To keep on the weekly topic- Hardwick on M Pickett was ballsy and great.
Came here to say the same. Pickett didn't start full training with the club until last week of July 2019 due to a broken hand. 6 VFL games including 3 finals and a BOG in the VFL premiership later and Dimma has the balls to select him to debut ahead of Jack Ross and Kamdyn McIntosh.

Still hard to believe really.

Paul Roos telling Jason Taylor to pick Clayton Oliver in the draft. Nice one Roosy. Woulda been Darcy Parish otherwise.

Paul Roos picking Simon Goodwin as our next coach. Thanks again legend!!

Somewhat Roos related but Swans fans basically forcing Sydney to tear up Terry Wallace's contract and sign Roos instead was a big fork in the road moment for the Swans.

2014 Bulldogs trade for Tom Boyd after their captain Ryan Griffin requests trade to GWS…7 years for $7M…two years later a premiership and most Dogs fans would agree he was equally deserving of Norm Smith that day!

Massive call, doesn’t get much bigger!
