That is eerily similar to Garry Lyon's Collingwood jibe from August 2008:

"The symbolism of today shouldn't be lost on anyone," Lyon said.

"I think you will enjoy the fact that whilst tonight is the rebirth of this great footy club, our greatest rival is in disarray.

"The Collingwood footy club is going down the plughole as the Melbourne footy club re-establishes itself as a power."

Hands up whose club wants wants a high profile Melbourne figure to slag them off next?

I'm now quite happy to admit that in 2016 I said Mason Cox was the worst player in the AFL and would never amount to anything. Boy I got that wrong :p

Two years later, I was cheering everything he did on Friday night and thought it was great to see him dominate the reigning premiers and a supposed juggernaut like that. He's an absolute legend, on and off the field. Love seeing him play. As long as this a predictions thread: first goal Saturday will be Cox or Varcoe

Probably already been posted here.
Probably as worse as his 2014 GF prediction.

To be fair to Kingy in this thread, when the rest of the journos came down with mass hysteria last week and all started tipping Melbourne, he said on SEN if Demons allow us to take 104 marks like they did v Hawks, we would be up by 12 goals at half time.

We took 110 and were up by 64 points at HT....

Luke Darcy was one of the only other people besides myself in the 2012 pre-season who thought Sydney would win the flag, so I rate him enough for that.

In the 2007 pre-season, Fremantle-Western Bulldogs GF predictions were fairly common. Many thought they'd be the best two teams in it, although part of that was the romance of their respective GF unfamiliarity. Neither made finals.

The Sydney 2003 wooden spoon predictions were just plain bad. I watched all their 2002 games and if you thought that you were insane. But some of these predictions are downrating the clubs from other interstate hubs, happens occasionally with the other sides, the Victorian media overlooks and underrates them. Canberra Raiders have a shinboner-esque habit of regularly being predicted last and then leading the ladder for several rounds (or making finals).

Since the mid 00s, I've often found that when a betting market (match, award, etc.) is paid out due to an overwhelming favourite, or a new short odds record is set, it tends to be an upset, or much more of a fright than suspected.

Best: Predicted that Adam Cooney would win the 2008 Brownlow at the start of the season, probably the only one I've gotten right. My logic being that a number 1 pick was due to do something.

Worst: Probably thinking the Eagles would be bottom 3 this year. Also didn't rate Jordan De Goey prior to this year.
