Tonight on the news they mentioned Demetriou was in town to sort out the issues we are having with Crowds at AAMI. He then got asked about the pick 26-30 the Crows are supposedly going to get for Bock and i didnt quite catch on to his response.

Did anyone hear what he said?

He basically said that he doesnt understand where that number came from. Cause these picks will probably be used after the compromised drafts. If we were to come bottom in 2012 we would get pick 1 and then pick 2 for bock.

Rules explained here. We have 5 years to use it. So why wouldnt we wait until after these drafts

Compensation picks will be tradeable and can be used by clubs at any time within five years. First round compensation picks cannot be used until the end of the first round in the 2010 and 2011 drafts. Clubs will be required to nominate the year in which they plan to use the compensation pick before the first round of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season in that particular year.

Christ, if we finish last in 2012, this board will go up in a mushroom shaped cloud

so if we are doing well we could trade the pick to a team down the bottom of the ladder for a good player? And its a win for both sides. We dont loose much and they gain a low draft pick?

Woo, you made my head spin!

I wanted to just say "It doesn't work that way", but you made me reconsider.

If nothing else, if we traded off the compensation pick to a bottom team after 2012, there could be a hell of a court case!

Trigg used this year as an example because it best illustrated his point of the compensation being inadequate.

I very much doubt any club decides to pull the trigger in the next two years. But the it becomes interesting as to everyone using the compensation in 2012, creating a semi-tainted draft as well....

Either way, it looks likely we'll hold onto the compensation to used it to our best advantage. So much so we'll nominate when we believe there's a couple of 1st rounders that interest us a lot.

Yeah I know, you can almost say that 2012 is looking to be another compromised draft due to club taking their compensation picks.

Demetriou basically had a go at the AFC by saying Bock isnt the first player to switch clubs and we should get over it and stop complaining.

What a tool the bloke is, sure he isnt the first but he is the first to leave ....

a) for next to pittance (under normal circumstances we could have worked a trade!)
b) due to 1 team having a drastically larger salary cap advantage that current teams cannot even get near matching!

2013 will also be comprimised. The first rd extends to 18 teams. What if 8 players go to the Gold Coast and we have a decent year. If the other 8 teams also wait until 2013 we could easily finish with a pick in the 20s.

Going now means we develop a player for 2 years prior to 2013 and given the player turn over this year is expected to be at its greatest, we might need that player.

A) the preseason draft?

B) the Sydney Swans?

Assuming we finish around eighth in 2012, and assuming that three teams below us also lose players, we'll end up with two picks around 10 - 12. I think that's about fair enough for Bock.

Say the crows get a first round pick and traded that pick this year to Richmond for example. Richmond would then choose when to use that pick in 2012 and it would follow their pick. So we could trade our pick 13 which could actually be worth pick 2 for them.
Is that how it works?

If GWS have the same deal as GC then the 2012 draft could be even more compromised then the current ones. Say GC take 8 this year and GWS use the full 16 of uncontracted players. Thats an extra 24 picks to be used up potentally in one draft. We might be better waiting until the 2014 draft to get something decent.

While theoretically possible, highly unlikely.

I doubt GWS rip 16 player, thinking around 10.

Plus teams in their premiership window won't use the picks. The last thing they need is a guaranteed low first rounder with a guaranteed $60K

I was of the understanding that GWS get a 2 year window to poach uncontracted players. With that extra year it is possible that they will take more.

Here it is

More time
Team GWS will enjoy the same draft pick concessions as the Gold Coast franchise but will be given extra time to build its list.

Team GWS will have access to 16 uncontracted players, from AFL clubs, across a two-year period. If it can’t sign 16 players in 2011, it can continue signing players in 2012.

The western Sydney-based club also has the option to sign 10 previously-listed and nominated players in 2010 and 2011.

The AFL has also granted the club the first eight selections in the 2010 NAB AFL Rookie Draft. With age and experience restrictions on rookies being altered, Team GWS will be able to select de-listed AFL players - with experience - with these picks.

The way I read that was GWS get to start signing players from next year to be part of the first team (same as Bock to GC) but they can also sign players at the end of 2012 to join the team for the team for 2013.

No, I think you'll find that we'd have to commit to using our pick at the beginning of that season. The picks ultimate value would then be determined by where we finished, we could then trade that pick on to another club, but its value would remain the same as it was with us.

Otherwise there could be some massive rorting going on. Ie Geelong finishes first, which would give them say pick 18 or something, if they then traded it to the team that finished last, it would suddenly become the #1 pick and worth a shitload more, so Geelong in essense would be stupid not to trade it.

Arh, yes sorry mate, missread.

I guess it's still only 1 per club, but the ability to spread over 2 contract years is quite a big advantage.

I guess GWS doesn't have the lifestyle pulling power GC has and the AFL wants to combat that with an increased window.

I'd still be surprised if they poached 1 from each club. They only have so much money in excess of the cap, they offer big chucks to a few big names then the rest would be players who just want out.
