Exceptional list manager. His managment of the salary cap, and ideas of list needs are first class.

His drafting is less great, however still good. He has had great draft last year (Schoenmakers, Shiels, Savage) the year before (Rioli, Whitecross).

He needs (Thorp, Renouf, Morton) to show alot more, as they are still young and learning. Renouf needs to become a good ruckman whilst Mitch needs to get fit.

The year Before (Ellis, Dowler, Birchall, Bailey, Muston) was a good effort selecting Birchall, Bailey (unlucky, would be great-not CP fault), Muston were great picks at the subsequent selections.

Ellis is a good player, needs a big 2010, which I believe he will do. Dowler finally showed something in 2009, still had a way to go, but 2005 is starting to get better and will be viewed very highly by all of us mid 2010.

Massive blooper: Joel Selwood

Massive Win: Cyril Rioli

Get the Burgoyne and Gibson deals done, and a ruckman if Bob is gone and I rate him VERY highly. Still a great list manager IMO, we are fortunate to have him.

Chris Pelchen's a star.

His formal title is General Manager of player personnel and strategy.

Since his inception he has developed an infrastructure of required players, scouted and drafted many of our premiership team (with great success), whilst continuing to organise our team list with specific type players rather than 'best available'.. *cough Carlton*, in keeping with core traits (skilled, tough) of Hawthorn.

If anyone has noticed, another bloke is acting as the head & mouth of this trade season, however Pelchen is very much the neck of this facade and will act to ensure the Hawk's reach the best possible solution for us!

My dad taught me not to believe the hype about this guy. He thinks he is more interested in getting his name in the papers and getting a better paying job than anything.

I think that the basis of our premiership team came from guys that were here before Pelchen.

He has mucked up for years by drafting key forwards not backs - and for getting inside mids instead of some outside ones.

Apart from Rioli, I think he has made more mistakes than successes with the key early draft picks.

I think we should trade him for a guy who stays in the background and has less ego.

You're such a piss-taker, Chrissie.

I lack an in-depth understanding of who really calls the shots down there in trade week so I have a question - how much influence does Pelchin really have over who we trade and who we pickup?

I always imagined that the head coach would have as much, if not more say in such matters. Likewise Dustall too.

I think you would find Clarko would tell Pelchin what players they would want/not want, then it would be up to Pelchin to close the deal. I doubt Pelchin would take it upon himself to recruit players, that just wouldn't be on.

how many (required) players have actually wanted to leave since he has been around?

how many players have signed on for sigificantly less than market value since he has been around?

is he responsible for list management? i'm still fuming at jarman, robran and mcpharlin walking out.

I am with you on this one.

While he had a great year when he got Roughie, Buddy and Lewis following years he picked Dowler ahead of Paddy Ryder and then took Thorp ahead of Joel Selwood.

Can you imagine our list if we didn't have dowler and thorp and had Selwood and Ryder - if we kept Zac Dawson we could have been premiers 2008 through to 2016 (salary cap pressures aside)

Needs to get a big name trade and find a draft gem this year to get my vote of confidence

Not wanting to get into the debate of the question - I would like to point out that Roughie Buddie & Lewis came to HFC a year before Pelchin came back to the club.

You have no idea what he does at all.

Why is Hodge not going to Gold Coast?

Why is Roughy knocking back offers much larger than ours?

Why are we not hearing of best 18 hawks desperate to leave the club?

Why are there not more Lekkas and Holland episodes of players using the media to get better deals for themselves?

Why is everything all in-house and positive?

You are one of these blokes who think Pelchen comes out of hibernation two weeks a year, and you judge him on your limited knowledge.

Spot on - Although some trades (Thornton, ROK) may not have happened
we now have guys wanting to come to our club, the above names + gibson + Burgoyne, Marcus Drum also, rather than leave (Nathan Thompson / Jon Hay even Crawford contemplated leaving).

My guess is very few of the BF posters have anywhere near the complete picture of his role, me included.

Eldorado and Hawks2NormSmith, you guys are exactly right.

He is wat more important than most people even imagine. What I love about Pelchin, is that even with Thornton and O'Keefe, he refuses to let our club get screwed through overpaying for a player. Sure it's great to have players of this ilk at the club, but surely there is a point where what we give up actually results in a net loss for the team. I think this is what's happening with Burgoyne at the moment, what Port are expecting (in my opinion) will actually eventuate negatively for us.

I have utter faith in the man, and has done nothing but the best job in managing our list. Keeping together so many talented player (as you pointed out eldorado) is no easy feat. Not only this, but Hawthorn is an attractive club to players considering moves.

Keep it up, Pelchin, and good luck this week!

Safe to say the Swans attitude towards the man has changed tonight - nah not really. I think after the bullshit with port he doesnt know what his agreeing too - the poor lad.

I don't know if it's Pelchin's fault or if he's just playing the cards that he's been dealt, but I'm not happy with any of today's trades.

Hawthorn got fleeced in every scenario. They should have gone for Jolly instead of Burgoyne. We do need Burgoyne's speed, but we need a ruckman who can actually do ruckwork a hell of a lot more. HFC were terrible last season and we just lost our only decent ruckman.

Also, why didn't they offer Kennedy a decent contract? He's gonna be goooood.

We are getting shafted by every club today.

Pelchin buddy, you are giving away players for lowly picks.

Are you turning over our list just for the sake of it?

I don't no what to make of today, but Pelchin buddy you better have a master plan in securing a back up ruckman and a Tall KPD - Coad from Sturt.

I am over trade week, someone please reassure me that this bloke knows what his doing, i am an outsider looking in and i don't know what goes on behind closed doors about our players but giving away players for third round picks.

I love Hawthorn but Pelchin buddy i think YOU NEED TO MOVE ON.
:confused::(:(:mad::mad::thumbsdown:

I am stoked with how things are going. 5 years ago we were a rabble. We had Hodge, Mitchell, we were about to trade Sewell, Bateman was just a player. We had no forward line, no back line, no structure at all. Just a handfull of good players and 15 flankers running in support.

Last year they won a premiership.

Maybe the hawks have been bent over a little today, but I compare it to trying to get the set of footy cards when you are a kid. When you have half a deck, you give away nothing, but to get the last card you trade about 50 cards away.

The hawks are getting closer and closer all the time. Now is not the time to be dithering around. Now is the time to be getting the job done. Burgoyne and Gibson fill key holes in the hawks list. Kennedy and McGlynn are competing for spots where we have a glut of players.

If we dont fill the holes the ship will keep leaking and we will not win another premiership, and with Buddy, Cyril, Rough, Hodge, Mitchell, Sewell, etc. etc. all with their best footy ahead of them now is the time to be trying to win premierships.

Keep up the good work Clarko and team. We all want to see another premiership.

Random post.

The rhyme is felchin!! HAHA

Sad to see Benny go, one of my faves, but in all honesty, if they wanted top go, we should accept what we got. We need to have minumum 3 picks in the draft. We were short if the quota given the addition of two players to the list, and only Williams gone. I think it was a shrewd move, and I think ultimately what we gain outweighs what we lose as those lost are replaceable. Gibson will replace Croad when he is finished, Burgoyne will add SPEED and silk through the midfield, which Mitchell and Lewis lack (speed-wise).

The move is for the better. We have enough talent coming through. Shiels, Suckling, Shoenmakers, Moss, Savage, Milne to accomodate us over the course. Lets get a premiership!!!

Whats with all the hate?? Kennedy and BMac are depth players only. We have many players in this role already and ones that can actually kick. Williams was average all year. People were calling for him to be dropped. I think his best days are well behind him.

We add Gibson a versatile defender and Burgoyne is a absolute gun. It a weak draft so i couldnt care less about picking up young talent.

Well done Pelchen, you have filled two major gaps without sacrificing another area. Now if you could find a ruckman and perhaps a mature age defender with a late pick would top off a solid trade week against seemingly all odds.
