What are the changes that the AFL are proposing that puts recruiting JU-H at risk ?

Did anyone hear Nick dal santo today talking about StKilda’s chances in their remaining games this year? When they came to the Bulldogs they all said Bulldogs should be favourites then dal santo says “being the Bulldogs they’ll always fancy their chances”. Or something like that. You could hear real venom in his commentary. Maybe jealousy?

Don’t mind Dal Santo, or Saints as a club tbh.
But every time I see that smug campaigner Frances (sic) Leech’s (sic) face, I revel in the fact that I’ve seen my club win a flag in my lifetime... and he’ll never see one in his. And how much it is burning him up inside. Always brings a smile to my face.

Not sure there was anything negative in that. Could be more interpreted as "the Dogs know they can bring it to any side", which I think we've showed already this year. Dal Santo doesn't seem the type to be that immature tbh

I reckon every shit team thinks we're gettable. We've lost to gc norf carlton and also only just been carlton by three points. Can you blame them?

And it compounds the problem because they'll bring their absolute 100% best against us. Until we start putting these teams away then they are all gonna fancy their chances.

And YET - every team is gettable for us, if only we could maximise our chances!

I heard the Del Santo radio piece and I didn’t detect any venom from him. Just thought he was saying that the Saints players would fancy their chances against us. Given our performances this year not an indefensible position.

This man is a freak.

INSPIRATIONAL Western Bulldogs defender Dale Morris is set to make a stunning return from a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee this weekend.

Likely to come in via the VFL, the 36-year-old is set to line up in his first match since the final round of last season.

AROUND THE STATE LEAGUES Veteran Hawk back, young Cat sizzles

Initially injured in March, in an incident that looked career-ending, Morris just needs to make it through this week to get back on the field, according to Dogs medical services manager Chris Bell.

"Provided he gets through training this week like we expect, he will make his long-anticipated comeback this weekend, which is extremely exciting for everyone else at the club," Bell told westernbulldogs.com.au.

Footscray faces Port Melbourne at Adcon Stadium at 2pm on Saturday – 106 days after Morris injured his knee.

Morris has lined up in 252 career AFL games.

THINGS WE LEARNED The player Freo can't afford to lose

The experienced backman accomplished a similar feat last year, hurting his other knee during the pre-season but making it back to the elite level by round 11.

Meanwhile, young forward Fergus Greene will miss the season as prepares for shoulder surgery for a dislocation suffered before the bye.

"Fergus has been in a conservative management model, but unfortunately, we have been unable to improve Fergus' shoulder to a level that will allow him to withstand the demands of AFL footy," Bell said.

"Fergus will need a shoulder operation which will end his 2019 campaign, but he'll be ready to attack next pre-season."

I’m fine with predatory marketing if it’s aimed at young blokes with disposable income who enjoy the activity marketed to them (and it doesn’t end up killing them). This is one of those cases, the damage from gambling can occur from these types of bets is real, but really they aren’t the main problem (I do wonder what portion of problem gamblers would make these bets, Im guessing it is low, could be wrong).

And I say this as someone who never really gets and gets no joy out of it.

The gambling discussion is obviously nuanced - I get Gil’s pragmatism re. taking the money, but I think that’s a superficial way to look at it.

I’m a gambler, predominantly on sports, and I’ve veered into problem territory a couple of times when I was younger and didn’t have a family. I’m responsible for my own actions and I don’t blame anyone else for it, and I wouldn’t like to be told that I can’t have a bet on the game when I wish. However, as an avid sports follower it feels like a deluge of advertising every time I watch a game. As someone who now takes my boy to games and watches sport on tv with him I’m frankly appalled by the incessant marketing. It’s normalising gambling on the game and while I will do my utmost to steer him away from it it’ll be a challenge. Particularly if we go down the route of the UK - watch any epl game and you’ll see scrolling advertising on the barriers with prices for who will score the next goal etc. The first thing my son sees when he clicks on the game in the afl app (he loves to check teams, ins/outs etc) is Bet Easy’s purple highlighted odds on each team with the full website only a click away. That’ll get worse instead of better I would think.

Gambling is legal, it’s here to stay and if the AFL is going to be run as a business then they can take money from whoever they like. But it’s breathtaking hypocrisy to claim at the same time that it cares about communities and is family entertainment when it’s assisting in marketing behaviour that can easily become addictive and destructive.

For those of you who only punt on the cup or the GF, that’s exactly what responsible gambling looks like. The problem is that gambling agencies couldn’t care less about you, they’re targeting people who might become problem gamblers because that’s how they make money. First goal scorer bets can easily be a gateway into more problem gambling, they know that and are marketing accordingly. In my view it’s pernicious and will rapidly become a stain on the game (if it isn’t already).

This is still reasonably new. I remember first seeing it in maybe 2015. It seemed a step too far. Aside from the obvious vulgarity of it, I don’t think it’s appropriate for the hoardings to interact with the game. Sport needs to be as pure as possible on the pitch.

Worth a look at these two vids. The link is posted on the WB website. Easton Wood prominent in both of them.

It staggers me that we can have a "Love the Game" round and at the very same time the AFL hauls in big bucks from the betting companies. I can only presume that the "Love the Game" round is not officially supported by the AFL.

There are so many similarities to the debate that was had about cigarette advertising and is still being had over alcohol advertising. The beneficiaries (sports bodies, footy clubs, etc) take their thirty pieces of silver but wring their hands because of the moral conflict. In the case of cigarette advertising the weight of public and medical opinion prevailed, but only after about a 40-year rearguard action from the tobacco companies, often using spurious science to muddy the waters on the dangers of tobacco. It has become a familiar tactic.

Nothing wrong with having a punt. I used to go to the races, bet every week etc etc but I was lucky. I was never addicted. I know good people whose lives have been ruined by compulsive gambling. When compulsive gambling becomes accepted more widely as a mental disorder we might have more chance of reining in those who do the exploiting of the vulnerable.

Came across an old link in my favs:

What a disaster that win turned into - Picken's career ended, Wood's nearly ended, Burton gone 12 months later, and weirdly Honeychurch 2 goals and Dunkley 3!

Great argument, and you have convinced me of your perspective.

AFL website can’t find a single thing to say about our game vs Port - In the “9 Things we’ve learnt” column it’s all about the Showdown next week

What’s truly amazing is that what was said is not news - so clearly the author neither understand the concept of the column and is clearly a slow learner

Feels like it's only ever negativity whenever we get a mention in that column. Whenever we win, it's either they're doubting our credentials, or our opponent gets the mention instead

That’s our third win in a row where it’s been about the other team. Port, Carlton & Brisbane.

It is jealousy, he basically said it when we won the flag with his cousin and so many first to 3 year players, said it was unfair because he was his whole career not tasting it. I've never liked him since then the week piece of crap.

I think that’s the problem though. We were a young team that won a flag. Why rebuild? Think we definitely overdid it. Why? Can’t say for sure, maybe we couldn’t sell ourselves well enough to established talent because I’m fairly certain even after we won the flag we had enough money to have a crack at Hurley so money wasn’t our issue.

Agree with Boyd throwing a massive curveball into our recruiting but at this point, it may have been a good curveball as harsh as that may sound. Let’s face it, Boyd hasn’t given us much on field since the GF, so that money being free now can only be good because the future for Tom was looking a little gloomy.

Disagree that losing Picken affected things. Given he was 31? when he suffered his concussion and never displayed significant signs of improvement I’d be disappointed if the club hadn’t made plans that didn’t include Picko. His loss has affected on field performances but shouldn’t be affecting our list build much.

You’re spot on about this off season. Absolutely huge for the club and so important we get it right. I’m kinda hoping Bevo takes a Ross Lyon approach with our recruitment this year and let the cobblers do the cobbling. I don’t want to hear about him overruling and making list management decisions. But it’s more than just what we do in terms of trade, free agency and draft this year. Think we need a decent amount of staff changes too. Time for some fresh intel, ideas and views. Maybe a new captain (hello Bont!)

It worked so well for us in 2015. Good draft haul, a big fish, some handy mature talent, fresh coach, captain and CEO. Bevo got the boys to believe in a narrative. We looked like a team. Played like a team. And Jesus did we play some sexy football. It’s the most enjoyable year I’ve had at the football (obviously except for September/October ‘16)
Liam Pickens contribution was immeasurable
Few players possess the hardness he consistently displays in clutch moments.

Fully fit and playing this year and I have no doubt we are playing finals. He makes everyone walk taller.

A truly heroic player
