I've had enough of all of these kents already.

Nothing would satisfy me more right now than drafting H.Reid and watch him kick a bag against the tin-rattlers.

And anyone else wanting to entertain splitting the pick in this massively compromised draft needs to give themselves an uppercut as well.

When Vic's do arrogant, they get 50 year MCG Grand Final deal signed.
When WA does arrogant, they lose any chance of hosting a grand final to the GABBA.

Same same but different.
And when WCE does arrogant, they keep their coach and the collective minds of the Vic media explode in synergy.

In my opinion it all hinges on what happens with Ben Mckay. As a North supporter I hope he stays. However in the event that Mckay leaves and we get pick 3 then I would hope that we draft McKercher then Curtin as that is what we need. It also depends on how much the Eagles rate Curtin.

You can lock in Curtin with pick 2 if McKay leaves IMO.
It's true the Eagles really like Curtin and helps he is a WA boy but he was the second name on our draft board only a few weeks ago. I don't think that's changed.

Since they’ve split the draft over two days there’s only been one draft where a club had received an end of first round compensation pick

That was in 2018 when we received band two (end of first round) compensation for Scott Lycett. That pick was the first pick on night two even though it’s considered a R1 pick - AFL logic strikes again

We traded what was then pick 23 (Jez McLennan) and a F5 to Gold Coast for 27 (O’Neill) and 32 (BWilliams).

We missed Bobby Hill, Rowbottom and Sparrow by trading down
Well there you go. As you say but, who knows what the AFL are likely to do.
In any case, I fully expect that North will match any bid that does not net them pick 3 so it may not be an issue at all.

Can’t tell you who we had in mind before the trade down, wasn’t paying particular attending to draft/trade other than our picks relating to ladder position in a flag year. Agree hindsight is a beautiful thing but even with hindsight and not even considering the fact that we traded down:

XON
Luke Foley
Bailey Williams
Jarrod Cameron

Other than BBW coming good in the second half of this year given they are all picks 28-39 I don’t see how that is anything but a bust. Other than the occasional exception (Sheed, Ginbey/Hewett) trading down is also fraught with danger as “talent” becomes less predictable which is why we should absolutely take Reid with pick 1.

Most of that draft was a bust agreed, but this does not automatically mean the downgrade trade with GC was a mistake imo. Benefit of hindsight again, if we did the draft again knowing what we know there are half a dozen players in front of XON but we aren't psychic.

I wasn’t saying we f**ked it up because we traded down (although I can definitely see how my post can be interpreted as such), I’m saying we f**ked it up full stop. It’s a shame we didn’t pay the Kelly asking price that year, was far more reasonable, got Brander off the books and things would have been rosier for the next couple of drafts

Brander should have been traded, agreed. But hey, at that point in time it was the right call to sell the farm for Tim Kelly and try and retain Brander.

I'm one of those that never hold it against the trading/recruiting team for mistakes that were only revealed when the future pans out differently. The 2018 draft, BBW aside, is indeed looking like a failure.

Agree. We went all in on another flag. Didn’t work out. I can live with that and the consequences. Would much rather that than hang around 5th-12th for a few years

Depends how badly Norf want Reid
Not that bad by all accounts, and I don't see why they would've bothered bending gold coast over on the weekend if that was the case, just to trade back up for him. Makes far more sense for them to keep what they've got, go for Curtin who fits a far bigger need and then grab Mckercher or Watson with the compo pick as well as grab Sanders. Trading their draft currency away just to grab Reid when they already have too many young mids who were high draft picks to fit into the team doesn't really make sense.

A
Do the northern academy kids have to agree to be taken. ?

Can Jed Walter opt to be taken in the open draft?

What if??

Absolutely they need to agree. Walter is a known Eagles tragic, I’ve posted before wondering how ROB would look at it if Walter told GC to f**k off he wants to play for the eagles. They’d obviously need to assure him that he’s hoo g to be taken otherwise he’d be stuck at North.

i've gone off the idea of trading a F1 to double dip in the pointy end this year. for all we know it could be number 1 again and there might be another reid-tier kid out of the blue. lets try not to get oneitis over this draft.

Honestly

Can you ever remember so much outrage and media coverage over a coach not getting sacked?
It's because they laid it all out on the line and have been shown up as fools.

Their credibility in regards to reporting on WCE is now shot, after saying it was a 'sure thing' for a number of weeks now and being completely wrong.

No doubt that if Reid was available we would take him. But our needs are KPD's especially if McKay leaves. We have only have Bonar and Dawson in the twos neither are big enough. Yes we can trade for another but we need to start developing our own. There are plenty of mids out there ( no disrespect ) but KPD's are like gold so when they are available you need to draft them.

Yep
Left with egg on their face.

Jon Ralp after the win against the Bulldogs "Adam Simpson has given his finger to WC on his way out by not getting them pick 1".

If they were absolutely desperate for Reid, they wouldn’t have won vs GCS. That simple. How stupid are they going to look if they trade back up to 1 for him? I think they would be perfectly happy with Curtain and McKercher at 2 and 3. What’s going to be interesting is if as I expect, they don’t get band 1 compo for McKay and they have to choose between the two. Either way our absolute priority after drafting Reid is getting GC pick 4 for whichever of those are leftover given unless something drastic changes Hawks will take Duursma at 3.

Yes, they can opt out if they wish to do so.

But, why would they? Guaranteed to get picked up by a club that you have already worked with for years and no relocation required.

It's about as good a deal as you can get as a draftee.

Credible reporting.

In regards to the Victorian media and how it pertains to us i think i can go out on a limb here and call that an oxymoron.
