One of the biggest cultural shocks I've ever had was going to Manchester - in 1998 - and seeing not one red shirt around town. But I did see an absolute ocean of light blue ones. Was really jarring. And City were in Division 2 (the old Division 3) at the time.

Funny you mentioned Charlton - I saw them play at the Valley at the time when they briefly were in the top flight.
Yeah, it’s incredible isn’t it! Manchester City cop it unfairly because of their recent success, I worked with Paul Lake - he’s a HOF’er at City and he loved having a yarn about how authentic their culture was. I also worked with Kenny Swain (best known for Aston Villa) who STILL supports Everton today despite never playing for them and carving out a good career for many other clubs. Those smaller Merseyside clubs (and Man City, though not sure you can call them small any longer) have serious allegiance.

Haha, small world. I look at the clubs that were featuring prominently in the Premier League when I was there just a few years ago and it’s wild to see where they sit now. Football moves quick there. Luton are in the prem and Brighton are a good club!!!!

Unpopular opinion:
Viney and Maynard are both very tough players

For some reason, supporters of clubs external to Collingwood seem to think Maynard is soft, or a fake tough guy. Where does this narrative even originate from? He copped a hard hit from Ryan right in the liver and went down, anyone would be floored by that.

Viney is as tough as they come, uncompromising, strong, brutish and always getting in and under. You cannot call him soft.

I am fully aware that you are just winding up Christian btw Vinnie - I'm just stating that generally, supporters of rival clubs falsely call Viney and Maynard soft.
Correctomundo 😂

Marcus Bontempelli is the best player of the past decade, due to the combination of consistency, durability and pure footballing ability.

He's also in my top 5 of players I've ever seen in my lifetime (been watching since the mid-90's).

Agree with this, the only player I've ever seen that does every single element of the game perfectly. Add to that, with his height he can play as a rover or full forward and still dominate.

Happy to have him in the top 10 in the AFL of the 21st century but he doesn't have the ability to dominate a game like Ablett Jnr or Buddy did. Isn't quite as consistent either.

It's his consistency I rate the most.
Has averaged over 20 disposals a game since his second season. Plus either a tick over or just under a goal per game during the same period of time.

Go back and watch his 2021 gf performance, he is a big game player imo.

When will north fan stop blaming others for their predicament and take responsibility for their actions?
They are incredibly protective of their leaders and decision making.

The majority of people that got us in this predicament are gone.

North has in the past 2 years has gotten a new CEO, new football manager, new list manager, new recruiting officer, new assistant coaches on basically ever line, new development coaches, new head of performance, new strength and conditioning coach, changed up the board and employed the most successful senior coach in 21st century football. I'm going to go out on a limb and say apart from Anthony Stevens you wouldn't be able to name any other board member, let alone tell me anything about them.

So basically what you're asking is why don't North fans stop saying positive things about Sonja Hood, and start employing the Richmond method (i.e gobbing at players and staff over the fence as they come up the race, dumping a gargantuan pile of chicken sh*t at club headquarters, publicly declare they are microwaving their memberships cards e.t.c)

Well here's why- Hood has inherited an broken, ungodly mess of a football club that the most experienced administrators in the history of the code wouldn't be able to turn around in the barely 2 seasons she has been president. She has also survived a recent bout of breast cancer on top of the stress having to try and undo the mess of the previous destructive administration.

So that's why alot of us go easy on her and come across as 'protective'.

They lost by 74 points. Which I think backs up RUNVS Point.
Strange game that one. I had Bont leading the Norm Smith half way through the third quarter.

They probably lose by 100+ if he isn't out there.
That was weird. 17 points up half way through third.

Think I read somewhere Melb got out to $5 odds?

On SM-S908E using BigFooty.com mobile app
"Closest" 74 point game you'll see. Dees were down by 19 points halfway through the third
And were only up by a goal with a minute left inThe 3rd quarter

And Bont was BOG up until that point

Fair call if we’re only including the last ten years. Probably still behind Martin and Dangerfield’s respective contributions, but has gone past Fyfe, Ablett and Franklin across that decade.

Fantastic player to watch and has more ability to play tall, small, defensive and offensive than anyone currently playing.

This post goes to show how subjective these takes are.

I have Ablett, Fyfe & Franklin all ahead of both Martin & Dangerfield, & Bont would be again between the 2 groups.

IMO

Truth really. Collingwood on their knees and the AFL made them a franchise. Eddie and the Footy Show a 3 hour propaganda programme.
Whereas St Kilda should have been put out to pasture after retuning 22 cents to the dollar for their benefactors in the 80s

Once the vfl Bailed them out they became the absolute basket case they remain to these days.

Its a shame too many of their fans put Their frustrations into hating more successful and well run teams. Says much about their personal insecurities

Just how dominant Fyfe was gets forgotten because he hasn't played a full season since he won the Brownlow in 2019 and has played stuff all in the past two years.

I think you're both misunderstanding me (and possibly the bloke who initially posted the big Bont call). This is about the last decade. Anything pre 2014 is not relevant.

Fyfe has been magnificent, and a better player than Bont across his whole career - possibly my favourite non-Tiger player of the last 20 years. But between 2014-2023, there's no doubt he's had a lesser overall output than Danger, Dusty and Bont. For starters, he's only averaged about 13 games/year for the last 8 seasons. 2019 he was phenomenal, but for the other 7 years he's had <50 Brownlow votes in total. Just not comparable to those other three, especially given his lack of finals and finals output.

Ablett and Franklin are all-time greats, and their careers in entirety far outweigh that of Bont. Absolute hall of famers, the pair of them. But both did most of their best work pre-2014, and neither have even secured in a premiership during that time. In fact, while Buddy was pretty decent in the losing 2016 GF, both had shockers in 2020 (GAJ injured early) and 2022 (Buddy should've stayed at home) GFs respectively.

Dangerfield and Martin are the only players Bont is really competing against to be the best of the last decade, but he's still a bit of a way back.
