What would a Dutton Liberal leadership mean for the Liberals and the country?

The rebate was needed to keep private alive; but people now know that if you get really sick private generally sends you to public anyway
The Medicare rebate costs the budget $7 billion annually. The Commonwealth Government only spends $100bn on health, so the handout to people who buy private insurance is a good chunk. The evidence it does anyone other than the people who get the handout any good is not clear.

And howard got not one reform from private health for that. Nada

Need to read the fine print on your cover and see if they cover all ambulance or just what's deemed an emergency.

It says:

In Western Australia the policy provides:

Emergency: Unlimited with a waiting period of 7 days.

Non-emergency: Unlimited transport with a waiting period of 30 days.

Private health is as pointless as private schools
No - there are high quality alternatives to private schools. For those with severe or chronic debilitating - but not life threatening health conditions - needing immediate attention and without access to large savings, especially the elderly, private health cover offers the only alternative. And that includes dental care.

BUT, What I think you meant, and what I would strongly agree with, is the inequity of the public funding of private health funds at the expense of adequate funding of hospitals and access to health and dental care for those on low incomes.

Cutting the private health care rebate without putting in place a raft of other policy initiatives to address supply, access and equity would be a huge mistake imho.

Our crumbling and grossly inequitable health care system, much like the housing market, has got to the state it is in through the deliberate politically motivated decisions under (mostly but by no means entirely) conservative Federal and State governments. Both putrid, rancid scrambled eggs will take years to unscramble - and only then by the bravest of political leaders with the strong support of a facts based commercial media. I can not see that time happening any time soon.

No I meant what I meant…
plenty of countries have better universal health systems than ours that cost less per GDP ..
Extremely rare to find private schools in Scandinavian countries… that have better overall all results.
Having a strong health system for all, that also has a strong focus on preventative health, is way cheaper than sending profits overseas to insurance companies.

These are the types of people we are talking about. Scum of the earth.
The Federal Liberal Party is using as its major populist platform the patently absurd and inherently dangerous notion that you can stop one form of targeted racial hatred (antisemitism) by dismissing, downplaying and in some cases actively promoting another form of targeted racial hatred (islamophobia).

That Peter Dutton is not just allowed to get away with this with very little open criticism from those in power but that his campaigning is backed by the largest commercial media organisation in Australia tells you all you need to know about the state of the media and politics in Australia in 2024.

I fear what the background of the 2025 Federal election campaign will look like.

Our media is an attack on our democracy… shit media = shit political system.

No surprises here. And feel a bit sorry for Sharma here. He's surely just saying out loud the deliberate messaging that is being provoked by Dutton's latest edition of culture wars backed by the Murdoch media.

Of course they think it's fictitious because the mainstream media doesn't give a shit about it and don't report it.

Dutton is a lot smarter than the violent, vitriolic and divisive Left will have you believe, his flag stance is a welcome relief and should be applauded, the next election will be a lot closer than people think as they rally against what this divisive Albo government has done in the past 3 years. Australia is fast becoming a madhouse out on the streets and someone has to stop it. Albo won't!
