Whats the deal with Mitch Morton?

Mitch Morton - I am not claiming to be a rocket scientist by saying he is very much a boom or bust prospect. Morton is however well worth the punt as he will immediately walk into our squad and be in our top 5 most dangerous attacking players. The issues with him have been numerous and well-documented so I won't rehash them here. He has demonstrated 2 patches in particular of outstanding form - 1 as a 3rd forward who was a very dangerous goalkicker, but most impressively as a running wingman/half forward at the end of 2010. His last 6 games of that season were at a very high standard and this is where I would like to see him given a chance for Sydney. We are desperately lacking in players of that type and if he plays at that level he will be more damaging than Ben McGlynn playing a similar role. Mitch Morton has a very good to excellent ceiling, and while I think it is unlikely I hope he reaches this with us as he would be a best 10-12 player.
What I posted after we traded for him.

Amazing to see how the guy has changed the opinions of Swans fans. Have a look at the response the first time his name was brought up on this board. http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/2010-sydney-swans-trading-discussion.716078/#post-17984124

Loving the massive wraps for Vesz, including being linked to the Gold Coast. What a talent.

Edit: Just jumped to the last page - we offered $1.6 mil for four years Sherman? Holy christ.

Can't believe the Dogs ended up with Sherman, Barlow and Veszpremi. Lucky them.

At least Everitt has won us two games of his own boot.

Hindsight is always a very very good leveller. I recall thinking Morton would do a Fev and grab a hold of an interstate spot to try and revive his career and blow it. So far I have been very impressed with the way he has gone about it. Seemingly trained hard early (unfortunately got that infection pre-season) and has (IMO) tried to play the team game and adapt his style to better suit what the coaches want out of him. I really think he can be another Kennedy/McGlynn/Mummy type success story and make a long successful career with us. Here's to him having a premiership medal soon too. :thumbsu:

swans4eva is out in a 2010 trade thread embarrassing some of us with some likes on Mitch Morton.

Don't fret is swans4eva, I said it.

I just get excited whenever an alert pops up. I hope I posted something stupid.

Kennedy, McGlynn, Mumford, Richards, Bolton, Mattner, Hall, Ball, etc were all hard workers at their original clubs, though.

In terms of flakey-but-talented recycled players, we have a less distinguished history. Are there prominent recent examples aside from Nick Davis (and we never actually turned his attitude around - he remained a lazy silly).

No, we didn't! If you read it properly, we allegedly offered him $1.6m over 4 years...big difference!

Yeah good point J Moore. Can't really pull one out off the top of my head... Maybe Shaw?

True, but even 1.6mil over 4 years would've been a disaster. He's been a big disappointment at the doggies. It's funny how hard we went for him at the time as well, in hindsight. Sucked in to them I say, phew! for us.

Listening to The Rub (MMM Podcast) couple of days ago, and they mentioned an anecdote where Cale Morton was talking to Mitch and mentioned something like "Mate, you must be hoping for an injury to be able to break into the team." Mitch replied "Nah mate, just really happy with how the boys are travelling and doing well. If I get my chance, I want to have earned it"

Cale couldn't believe that he was actually talking to Mitch!!

Loving his immersion in the Bloods culture, and really shows how Mitch has matured and taken real ownership of himself.

Bumping myself - But Mitch must be pinching himself! Called up in round 21, and now named to be playing in a grand final.

Could be the X-factor. Not many clubs have seen what the new Mitch can do, and in him we have a genuine lead up and crumbing forward (not a bad contested mark either). 7 tackles against the Pies shows that he knows what his role is.

Someone like Morton (or a Bird/Parker) really does need to bob up and kick 3-4 goals to take some of the heat off the top-liners and cause the hawks some real headaches.

Morton for pick 79 could be a brilliant trade if he can do that, and it gets us over the line....even if he drops off again next year.

Best of luck to Mitch tomorrow!
I was sad to see him gone, and I hope he has a big gold medal around his neck tomorrow afternoon!
Same with Pyke, whats this stupid talk of him being dropped?
NEVER! The big Canadian to be best on!

Love the Swans culture, and if I didn't get drafted to Richmond, that's where I would wanna be.
.... anyone open to drafting me? ;)

SWANS FOR PREMIERS!

All I can say is that Morton will explode next year. I'd like to think

With Morton in there now and Rohan back, Reid improving the Swans forward line has a lot of bite to it.

Mitch made some really strong plays, strong tackles and his trade mark snaps. beside a couple poor kicks forward i thought he was very good
