Isle of Dogs (2018)

This animated film has the quirkiness of Wes Anderson movies with so much detail and whimsy that it'll probably require multiple viewings as most of his films do. It's great seeing stop motion animation again and I think this is film is one of Anderson's best. The film is packed with laugh-out-loud moments, full of deadpan observations – a quintessential Anderson touch – and exciting sequences. This is cinema at its best. 9/10

Anyone seen mile 22 yet? Might go see it this week sometime.
A mate said he saw it last night. He isnt usually into these types but he enjoyed it

He felt confused by the ending. He thought there could have been 10-20 minutes more

Been doing the weekly movie date nights again so some really quick reviews

MI Fallout - Brilliant. The rewatchables podcast mentioned that credit needs to be given to Fallout and Rogue Nation as a two punch combo in the discussion of best Action films of the last 20 years. The hook is obviously Cruise doing INSANE stuff (The Burj stunt in Protocol, the rock climbing in MI2, the plane stunt in Nation) this one feels like it has 5 or 6 of those combined with a breakneck pace, good villain and some humour. 9/10

BlacKkKlansman - Really good. It has a pretty unique style, kind of mainstream 70's mixed with the blacksploitation films of the era, mixed with some new film making techniques. Theres a little clunky dialogue but Washington is really good and Topher Grace is great as Duke as well but Adam Driver steals the show for me. Fascinating story (that they have taken alot of liberties with for the sake of filmmaking /and a better cinematic story) but does well with blending in your face language and ideas and cinematic need. 8/10

Off to see Crazy Rich Asians tonight and Mile 22 next week. I for one am pretty pumped for The Predator, the Adrian Brody sequel a few years back i thought was pretty good.

A great movie - a rare one where you enjoy the supporting cast just as much as the lead, Jamie Lee, Bill Paxton, Charlton Heston.....

True (no lies).

JLC striptease....WOW.

Something about the way the movie was shot. It seemed so clear to the eye.

People can say what they like about Cruise as a person, but the guy goes all-in on these films. Does his own HALO jumps at 25,000ft. Breaks his ankle jumping from one building to another (and keeps on going). Becomes an expert helicopter pilot so he can do his own dangerous stunt.

Crazy Rich Asians - it’s basically Monster In Law set in Singapore with asian people, in that way it shouldn’t work, at all, but it just does! A lot of heart, stunning settings and some pretty funny moments. It’s shallow and it does everything you expect it to, exactly when you expect it to but it all goes. 8/10

Two of my absolute favourite movies.

Still can't get over the fact neither Crowe nor Pierce got an Oscar nom for LAC (and Kim Bassinger WON for Best Supporting Actress).

Heard good things about Memento- hopefully as good as LAC.

The Guest

Loved the first half of the movie but the longer it went on the more '' hollywood '' and far fetched it became. Still enjoyed it though. Dan Stevens was superb in his role as David Collins. Intense yet smooth, tough, and very slick. The film was about a soldier who went to visit the family of his lost friend at war, only, he wasn't who he said he was. Typical bs ending but that's hollywood and the movies for you.

UFO (2018)

When a saucer-like UFO appears over Cincinnati airport a maths prodigy at the local university becomes obsessed with decoding what he believes is a message from it. His ultimate drive to answer the question: Are we alone in the universe? This film feels Canadian made, and is a nice sci fi thriller. There's no real big budget special effects and it doesn't descend into some horror movie. It's about the struggle of the characters trying to figure out what's going on and why, and because it stays true to this, the film works nicely. Having Gillian Anderson in the film gives it a boost too. 6/10
