Can’t think of too many highly regarded actors who haven’t punched the clock on a few shockers, particularly if they’re “movie stars”. De Niro, Nicholson, Pacino, Freeman...loads of others no doubt.

Daniel Day Lewis, Phillip Seymour Hoffman maybe...but they weren’t exactly movie stars.

For sure, but all of them have higher highs than Denzel. He doesn't have his Taxi Driver, Chinatown, The Godfather or even Million Dollar Baby to be held in that esteem as those four (or My Left Foot or Capote for the other two named).

All personal opinion of course but Glory, Cry Freedom, Malcolm X, Philadelphia, Remember the Titans, Training Day and The Hurricane aren't a bad start for showing range and skill.

What’s more amazing is that Tom Cruise hardly ever seems to set a foot wrong.
For all the hate he gets the guy is constantly hitting winners.

Agree with this aside from Freeman, who I'd put on that second tier with Denzel.

Leonardo DiCaprio jumps to mind. His back catalogue is very solid.

He single-handedly pushed the Mission Impossible franchise past James Bond in terms of defining what spy action movies should be like. He has turned in a few shockers inevitably (like The Mummy reboot) but otherwise you often know it's a good one when he's in it.

Still a damn fine movie and the best video game adaption

Street Fighter is the best if only because of Raul Julia hamming it up and JCVD delivering that speech.

Yeah fair, I certainly don't have him on par with De Niro, Nicholson, Pacino and Day-Lewis - I was just going with the list already posted. But he and Seymour Hoffman would be a level below those four but still above Washington for me.

If by a few times you mean the last 20 years. Seriously, try to think of a good role since 2000.
Yeah agree...maybe Silver Linings if anything. His three greatest roles to me were

Raging Bull
Taxi Driver
Godfather 2
King of Comedy

Heat, Goodfellas, Casino ..yeah yeah but to me virtually same character over again

Pacino’s been pretty much chewing scenery since Dog Day Afternoon. Though Donnie Brasco was good.
