Continued in Part 7:

Noise cancelling headphones in a private booth. Do not disturb was on for me too so no interruptions. Overnight flight with lights off.
Yeah I watched it on a big screen with surround sound and popcorn in a recliner.

Whiplash (2014)

Watched it again. loved it again. Five stars.

Watched it with the (older) kids this time. They thought it was pretty much a comedy. There you go.

Jaws (1975)

Overrated but still a good movie. The cinematography is top notch and so is the acting. The direction aims to keep the suspense "implied" for a lot of the movie, and that kind of works; but by the same token with what we know about shark behaviour it's all a little hard to swallow. You also need to overlook some plot holes/contrivances a bit. It's half a well made serious movie, half preposterous monster movie with a sentient, serial killing, but ultimately unbelievable shark as the antagonist.

3.5 Stars

You Hurt My Feelings (2023)

I love Julia Luis-Dreyfus' comic talent so looked forward to this one. I enjoyed it even if it didn't fully allow her to use her talents. This movie asks the question: How do we balance total 100% honesty with love, encouragement and support, when dealing with the people closest to us? It's a pretty quiet kind of a move with a smart, restrained funniness to it. Some of the funniest scenes though seemed to lack comedic rhythm that would really allow you to laugh out loud.

You'll love the unbelievable shark in 2-3-4 as well then :p

So I had the same for Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1 today but add in a ****wit who answered her phone (which was on loud)… twice and some deadshit kids who snuck in with 15 to go and talked through the end of the movie.

I’ll take my plane experience.

Anyway MI was awesome. It has an absolutely insane breakneck pace for the full 2.5 hour runtime but it doesn’t feel overdone (like Wick 4). Just a really ****ing great action/adventure film. The new additions are great (in particular Pom Klementieff) and as always with MI the locations are jaw dropping.

That's what you get for slumming it at hoyts.

Cha Cha Real Smooth (2002)

This type of movie isn't really my cup of tea but it's a solid script and there's some good performances, particularly Dakota Johnson.

5/10

Primal Fear (1996, Netflix) -

A legal thriller with a slimy Richard Gere representing a troubled Edward Norton on trial for murder. Couldn't blemish Norton's debut performance one iota but these types of 'everyone's a scumbag' films just aren't my jam from a personal enjoyment perspective. The investigative second act was also laborious. 5.5/10. Objectively solid though with great reveals.

Flipped (2010, Netflix) -

"Two eighth-graders start to have feelings for each other despite being total opposites."

A heartfelt coming of age drama that's a bit too neat and idealistic but works anyway. I thought it was clever that the two main characters were mostly narrating their thoughts off camera and thus limiting any bad acting. That said they were both relatively convincing. It won me over especially at a snappy 1.5hrs. 7/10.

Primal Fear is excellent. Disappointing you didn't like it.

Beyond Boundaries: The Harvey Weinstein Scandal

This doco started off ok but it became too long for the info it had and started becoming boring and repetitive before eventually turning into an historical women’s rights story.

What a grotesque and hideous creature that bloke is and seeing women shaking and breaking down when trying to tell their stories was harrowing.

Stop at Nothing: The Lance Armstrong Story

This was really good with heaps of old footage from even his very young, before fame days.

This man is a genuinely vicious, nasty, vindictive, sociopathic little gremlin. I can’t believe (if I’ve heard correctly) that he’s packing out conference centers and college auditoriums these days with motivational talks and success seminars. He couldn’t even be 100% honest with Oprah in his “supposed” tell-all interview.

Guy is pure slime and a bully to the people he call “friends” yet protects all the greasy politicians, doping doctors/coaches and other assorted shadowy scumbags who helped him out by not exposing the full truth of what he knows.

Complete coward.
