Liked the concept by Harmony Korine. Strippers, GTA/Miami Vice type vibes was interesting for the first half but meandered and went no where for the rest. Thought there would be a lot of gun blazing like a bit of John Woo, John Wick .. which was disappointing

Irreversible

Wow that's definitely one of the most intense movies. At least the reverse is the unwinding of the film and it's quite beautiful. Monica Belluci is definitely top 2 for me what a stunner
 
Trap (2024)
I was seriously enjoying this as a Sunday arvo silly movie, Josh Hartnett absolutely steals the show, very good performance.

But holy nepotism Batman, the only "twist" in this movie is M. Night Shyamalan ruining a perfectly OK film by casting his hack daughter.
I didn't know who she was and Googled her during the movie because I couldn't believe how much she sucked, then it all made sense.
 
Been on a sweet recent horror/thriller run, all solid 7.5 - 8/10s

Blink Twice: Had lowish expectations as it looked like a familiar set up, but was pleasantly surprised. Super entertaining and a stacked cast. You sense where it's going but there is also some unexpected story beats and moments of inventiveness. Giving off some Get Out/Jordan Peele energy. Solid debut for Kravitz.

The First Omen: It's wild that this came out the same year as Immaculate and has basically an identical premise. The difference is this is actually a good movie. High attention to detail with the historical setting and the 1970s style of cinematography, and great performances across the board.

Late Night with the Devil: Love the set up of this so much. Dastmalchian kills it in a lead role. The execution doesn't always fully land, but I was highly entertained the whole time.

When Evil Lurks: Really impressed by this Argentinian horror movie. The way they drop you into such a unique world is disorientating in the best possible way. The first 45 minutes are barnstorming and high-drama horror filmmaking. The tempo plateaus a little in the second half, but highly recommend checking this out.

Warm Bodies - Zombie movie but one which gives a lot more hope than the doom and gloom of most zombie movies. 7/10
 
The Three Musketeers - Part I: D'Artagnan (2023). French with subtitles.

I found the plot slightly confusing at times but it's a fun swashbuckling romp. The action sequences were well put together. Some of the settings are spectacular. Vincent Cassel and Eva Green are probably the only actors you might have heard of.

6/10.
 
The Accountant - Netflix

Ben Affleck , Anna Kendrick , JK Simmons star in this standard cliche of accountant turned John Wick without the massive body count

There are flashbacks and scenes of autism and flashing lights

But I liked it . At over 2 hours it was ok to pause and get a drink etc and get back to it

Unfortunately the twist was easily spotted - actually 2 twists but it didnt spoil the movie but enhanced it
 
Challengers... seemingly pitched at times as an erotic Zendaya vehicle and sporting movie, it has elements of both but is neither. It's a character drama with tennis as the launching point. Bouncing around a 13-year timeline, it follows the strange love triangle of three tennis juniors who go on to varying levels of success. The characters are all spiky, there's no good or bad guys, it's always interesting, some of the dialogue is laugh-out-loud funny, the tennis scenes are well shot and the soundtrack terrific. An odd end that I'm still thinking about. 7.5/10.

we watched Under Paris the other night, Netflix said it was the best shark movie ever or something like that, the Asylum shark movies are better, acting was ordinary, last 1/3 of the movie is shite, you end up hoping for some characters to be eaten

I didn't know much about this one going into it, aside from the two most trusted movie recommenders in my life pushing it strongly. So I watched and eeeeek that was intense. I don't even know how to write about it aside from stream of consciousness stuff.

The blending of art, literary and biblical references was right in my wheelhouse.
I appreciated that the villain (who is PERFECT) was given no backstory so I have no empathy for that guy whatsoever.
That scene in the cop car with the three of them was so ****ing tense.
It kind of felt like how I feel when I read a thriller novel - each turn of the page, or each scene, dials up the tension until I'm absolutely pinging with nervous energy.

"What's in the box?!" is going to haunt me all my days. What a brilliantly executed movie.

Often mimicked never surpassed in the murder/mystery hall of fame for me.

Also watched The Wild Robot... I think the previews were somewhat misleading, made it seem like an almost dialogue free movie where a robot that can't communicate adapts to the wild. Instead, it's dialogue heavy with talking animals through a plot contrivance. Took a while to get into it as a result, but the second half is beautifully done, a powerful story about parenthood and preparing your child for the time when you have to let them go. 8/10
 
Kneecap (2024). English and Irish with subtitles.

It's a lot of fun. Imagine if The Commitments and Trainspotting had a love child.

I didn't realise until after I watched it that was about a real hip hop group and the band members were playing themselves. The director, Rich Peppiatt, deserves credit in his first feature film for getting good performances from people who haven't acted before. He also adds a few visual tricks that embellish the movie rather than coming across as gimmicks. There's some underlying politics but you are not beaten over the head with it.

I’d heard a couple of months ago about two of the films of Elia Suleiman, Palestine’s most acclaimed director, being available on Netflix, and that they were worth checking out. Given it’s so very much in the news at the moment I thought I’d look and saw they’re leaving the platform on 13 October, so with that timeframe I would recommend people check them out.

I watched 1996’s Chronicle of a Disappearance and 2002’s Divine Intervention. You might expect his films to be overly didactic, depressing and difficult, but they are quite funny - he’s been compared to Buster Keaton and Jacques Tati, bringing a wry and understated humour to his films (though with an incredible underlying anger). The films are basically vignettes but with recurring characters and interlocking themes, which tend to focus on a feeling of statelessness and struggle for belonging.

Divine Intervention was probably my preferred one, and if you have reservations it’s probably the more accessible - less obviously an art film, more comedic, but also angrier. But I really enjoyed both. Thoughtful, funny and enjoyable, check them out while you can!

Incredible story and just so well done. This one will stand out for a while.

The non linear beginning/end is phenomenal.

The cinematography, the musical score. It’s just perfect.

Been a while since I came across a movie that moved me quite like that one.
