Good point ill have a look. Any kpd willing from this year onwards id say.

Or we could offer Rance the deal Hutchy came up with on footy classified :drunk: seriously though, Penny was enough for me, hate to lose another KPD

Not that young.
Average age isn't a good stat to look at. We have a core group of older players that were a part of our last shot at a flag, and then the majority of our list is youngsters with only a few pre-seasons in them. Not much in the middle.

Current St Kilda List:
0-10 games: 14
11-50 games: 16
51-100 games: 5
100-200 games: 5
200+ games: 4

Clearly the bulk of our list is under 50 games.

I see the saints list as one moving in the right direction but will obviously be hoping that their blue chip draftees can lift/ develop in the coming years to replace their vets. They are a pretty good age for competing right now but they should be looking at the future really which they are.

They've done extremely well with value recruits recently with Bruce, Sinclair, Lonie and Roberton good examples.

I think they still have about 10 spots to fill in the 22 of their next finals side. Some of which are already on the list

There's going to be another pick 2-7 coming our way this offseason, most likely one of the better mids in the draft considering the Blues and Lions are in need of key position players, and for us that will be stellar, however there's also the chance of the sneaky slider which we've been good at so far. In recent drafts we've grabbed Lonie at 40, Goddard at 21, Dunstan had queries about his body which meant he got to our pick in the 13 Draft, and there's been Sinclair and Templeton in the rookie draft who (especially Sinclair) have been well worth the risk.

We're not finished the rebuild by any means, however there are great signs so far that the young players have bought into the culture of the club and play for each other. I feel very confident that this group moving forward has the potential to gel really well under a coach with a solid plan for the future, very excited for the 15' Draft and then the off season in 2016 will be very interesting in terms of who might fancy us for a run at the 8 at some point after that.

Biggest myth going round is that St Kilda (and Melbourne) are a young team full of kids. In fact, they were older on average than Melbourne today.

Still overly reliant on Riewoldt and Montagna, and their back line is currently held up by the likes of Fisher and Dempster, along with Gilbert. Also have Geary and Ray filling roles. David Armitage is having a break out year but he's going to be 27 soon, and even Jack Steven is into the second half of his career.

Certainly not a team of rebuilding babies that the media would have you believe. You mentioned the Bulldogs - this is a team currently rebuilding. They've played on average a much younger team each week. The team that the Saints rolled out that beat the Bulldogs were on average older by over 12 months and played on average over 80 games compared to the Bulldogs 47.

So, whilst they are going ok, they're still going to struggle when their veterans retire over the next 2 years.

So basically in your opinion we are in line with almost every other team in the comp apart from the expansion teams, but for some reason will struggle in the next two years?? The difference between us and the Bulldogs I that we probably have more players left from the 2009/2010 eras where the Saints and Bulldogs played in the prelim 2 years in a row

4-7 after scraping over the line in the last minute against Melbourne. They're improving, but not that good.
We're certainly not "that good", but I also wouldn't go reading a hell of a lot into yesterday's game. I sat there after the final siren and aside from Riewoldt, I actually came up blank as to who else had what I considered to be a good game by their individual standards for us. I had to go through the rest of the team numerically to come up with another 2 or 3 who might have also fit that bill. We had an awful lot playing below their usual standards for the game and I suspect a lot of them almost had one eye on the bye next week as they were in need of a break.

Dempster, Schneider, Fisher, Riewoldt, Montagna all still to retire. Won't be easy to replace 4 AA players.
It won't, but Roberton is already playing pretty much as well as Dempster, Lonie looks like a likely upgrade on Schneids down the track, Hugh Goddard is already champing at the bit to play at CHB and McCartin will hopefully be up and about by the time Roey retires in a year or two's time. As for Joey Montagna, I don't expect him to retire any time soon and then of course there's the fact we are going to have a MASSIVE amount of salary cap space free to go on a spending spree in the next couple of years, to help us replace the aforementioned.

The WB have already gone out and bought their Boyd, we haven't yet and will be going very hard at just about anyone under 26yo who's any good over the next couple of years, until we spend that salary cap space.

It is crazy to talk about "average" age in terms of the Saints. We already know that Riewoldt, Fisher, Schneider, Montagna and Ray will not be in the team in 2018 so it will be the current crop of 18 - 23 year olds plus Steven and Armitage and whoever we bring into the club between now and then. So the question is what does the 18 - 23 crop look like>?

The young players look good, more importantly they have bought into Richardson's game plan and style. Right now I think our youngsters are fifth in line behind GWS, Bulldogs, Pies and Demons. If McCartin and Goddard live up to their potential I think we overtake at least Demons. But IMHO will need to,

  • Pick up an A grade free agent (stated intention),
  • Probably 2 more high potential mids (next draft target)

To have a team that can seriously challenge in the top 4 from 2018.

Not quite sure coz they still seem dependent on Riewoldt whenever i see replays of them.
Might be unfair to say that, it is just an an impression.
How competitive have they been when Riewoldt hasnt single handedly dragged them to a win ?...i.e. could they cut the cord now and not cop embarassing 100pt floggings by top 4-6 mobs ? He doesnt look as fit, probably due to modified training due to having no knees left....but do they stand up in games when he doesnt play ?

Think you are fair way off Gold Coasts aswell but definitely on the right track

Don't know about Gold Coast. I know they have a lot of injuries but it just seems that they are very fragile without Ablett and the current culture at that club may not be conducive to getting the maximum potential out of their list. Agree on paper they the makings of a good team but wonder if they will be able to hold it together. As a Saints man I would certainly be thinking our club would be looking at enticing a player from Suns back to Victoria, as would others I am sure.

Top 4 in 2018 is a stretch.

If we can be looking at battling for 6-10 in 2018 that'd be good.

Most of our high-talent kids have still played less than 30-40 games.

I don't think so. That is 2 and a half seasons away (50+ games). I think if we are not competing for top 4 by then we will be behind the clubs timetable of challenging for a flag in 2020. Not saying we need to make Top 4 in 2018 but we should be in the mix.

For mine it's the brand of footy we're playing and the intensity that is the most heartening. It's very watchable footy, conducive to increasing the fan / member base.

There's still skill errors aplenty and the game style means we're running out of legs early (witness yesterday), but that should come right by the end of next season.

Richo seems to have really instituted a good culture based around an expectation of hard work for every game, regardless (see Hawthorn game - great effort I thought to keep a flogging from a 100 point blowout near the end). I would cackle maniacally if Richo managed to snag a flag in the next five and Ross misses out on one (although I think this will be Freo's year).

23 and Under

Bonti - Acres
Stringer - Billings
Boyd - McCartin
Libba - Dunstan
Wallace - Sinclair
- Bruce
- Webster
- Lonie
- Roberton
- Ross
- Membrey
- Longer
- Wright
- Goddard

If your going to make a judgement such as this one at least try to be somewhat objective.

HINT: At least add blokes such as Macrae and Dahlhaus to our list (2nd and 4th in last seasons best and fairest). Would be a good starting point not to mention many others.
