Prediction Where will we finish at the end of the 2025 Home & Away season

Now that the 2025 season is officially starting this weekend, it might be interesting to see the views of our big footy board on where we will finish at the end of the home and away season.

I think we have the coach who has the passion, intensity and skills to get us our inaugural premiership.

We have shown that we have the personnel to compete for the flag. We just lost by 1 point to the eventual premiership Collingwood in the 2023 PF, and last year lost both finals after leading by record scores during these matches.

I think we will make the top 4 again at the end of the home and away season, and then make the Grand Final for only the 2nd time in our history.

Lest you think I am drinking and being overtly optimistic, the captains of the rest of the competition also think that. In the annual survey of captains, 8 captains picked us to make the GF this year (Brisbane got 9 picks and Sydney was picked by 1 captain).

Looking forward to a historic 2025 and riding the highs, and weathering the occasional lows!

I do a ladder prediction at the beginning of every season. I have us pencilled in at 6th on the ladder. I think we do just well enough to get a home elimination final but not enough to break into the top 4.

The market has us as 3rd favourites for the premiership (after Brisbane and Hawthorn) and equal 2nd (after Brisbane) to make the finals. So the “experts”, the market and those voting in this Big Footy Poll all agree!!

We're in a really funny situation.

At our best we absolutely could sweep the year.

But we've never ever been able to consistently bring our best, with it being 50/50 between mentality and injuries.

Last year we overperformed expectations with a turned over, young and inexperienced team built around a few older options and led both grand finalists by massive margins, but again mentality let us down.

Technically that makes us look like prime improvers - those young guys like Callaghan, Cadman, and even Green should continue to improve, Hogan, Taylor and Buckley shouldn't go backwards, and we even added Stringer. However as knowledgeable fans we need to see evidence that the mental fades are actually behind us (regular season last year was good under Kingsley, but that end of the season was brutal) and injuries are always god awful. Until then it really feels expected that we'll be more pessimistic than more casual observers.

Putting it altogether they predict that we will finish 7th with 13.5 wins for the season - lower than the top 4 finish I had predicted.

And thanks to our massive % win last week, we are currently 1st in the AFL ladder with a 2-0 record! This is also just the 4th time in our 14 year history that we have started the season with a 2-0 record (as done in 2015, 2018 and last year).
